Thanks for the compliments!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmHcbYk6EQQ video now running!

I made a video driving it around but it won't load onto youtube for some reason-
it runs and drives great i now have the intercooler pipping hooked up unlike in the video. I still have a few pretty major things to do like find a new rear as the final drive ratio isn't very good for 65mph on the highway top speed was around 80 but the engine was screaming, I think 3.90 rear is a little high i need to find a rear closer to 3.3- It also has more vibration at idle than i would like the rubber mounts i used aren't quite thick enough so should be a simple fix. It still needs glow plugs too i've been cold starting with a hair dryer :coolgleamA:

yes i do realize my hood is crazy I was bored and had extra spray paint and masking tape, it got out of hand  luckily this is just the screw around stage i'm going to build a cowl and paint it

This is great. I want to see it shred the tires with the diesel torque!!

Someone needs a windshield and dash cap :)

i'll fix the windshield when i have everything perfect so it doesn't get broken by the engine lift again haha

Interesting...

How's the acceleration and how's the weight of the Perkins compare to the 12A?
Considering a swap into a 2nd gen.

acceleration is pretty good surprisingly and pulls a lot harder than the 12a did at a much lower rpm, i'm going to swap rear's to a 3.27 from the 3.90 to make it better on the highway, which will slow it down too. it enters boost at around 2k so right where i want it- I never weighed the engine its self but if i had to guess id say it was a good 100lbs heavier including the turbo, the suspension stayed level and you really don't feel the extra weight I like it though it feels like it should have come in this car in the first place which is always a good thing

plus if i didn't mention before, first 100 miles clocked in at 47mpg

Excellent... Looking at a later model Ranger's 2.3L Mitsubishi 4D55 engine coupled to a Turbo II transmission and running gear.

A little update-
After a small mishap with the turbo return line getting clogged and blowing out the rear oil seal I picked up a new s4 turbo, corrected the problem and have driven it a few hundred miles since. Unfortunately I just don't like it. Strait line acceleration is the only descent thing about it. The gear ratio is all wrong. Turning feels awful since the engine sits way to high and due to the stock oil pan it can't go any lower without major mods. Without a new injection pump, injectors, and a basic engine overhaul (head gasket, valve seat, new springs) I'm pretty much at the max boost and fuel i can run. The engine just isn't worth the time and effort because the gains won't be that much more and there are better options out there already. That's where i'm starting over selecting my engine.
I figure i'll sell the whole set up and go with something from the mercedes line

Is it the handling your not happy with? Keep in mind a diesel engine is going to be a whole lot heavier which probably make the car understeer quite a bit. I bet a Mercedes diesel will be heavier.

i expected sub-par handling but its way worse than it should be because the engine just sits to high. If i was to go dry sump it would drop 10 inches and because of the iron head it is extra top heavy.

probably just going back to rotary though and diesel swapping something else

Raksj04 10-26-2011 07:23 PM

I bet it would be better with a VW TDI engine.

jecr 10-26-2011 09:55 PM

12arotary are you in the union, ky area.

12arotary 10-27-2011 12:26 AM

tdi would make a great engine to swap but it's out of my price range.
