Here are some from the weekend. Now if Mr. Murphy will stay away from this car!

I like Brian's "serious" face.

What's the verdict on the break-in? What were the issues and what did it make while spinning the rollers?

Fendamonky 03-17-2013 12:07 AM

The break-in started awesome last night. The engine was super smooth and took the 200 mile drive home like a champ.

After 100 miles of driving around today my car got a bit of an attitude this evening... I'm not sure (yet) of if I just ran a bit to low on fuel, if a spark plug stopped working, if an injector pigtail got disconnected, or if an injector is blocked...

Long story short I was driving home from dropping Jack off and heading up a hill when I got some breakup and then, while going down hill, my AFRs leaned WAY out before dying half way down the hill. It didn't really want to start up afterwards and when it did it was very unhappy. I threw a couple gallons of fuel into it hoping that would fix it... Then I just got a tow home. I'll pull/clean the injectors in the morning, deflood the engine, pull the UIM to check the injectors/connectors, etc., etc..

Yay for trouble shooting!

So it turns out that all the car needed was a good nights rest...

I went down to work on the car this afternoon and, before tearing into the engine bay, decided to give just starting it another try.

Lo and behold, she fired right up! The idle was a bit unsteady but that was because my PFC was reading 3 degrees C for both air and water, the AFRs were where they were supposed to be so I kept it running. Once the car got up to 15c it was idling a bit better, and by 30c it was smoothing out more and would idle fine without any assistance. As she warmed up to, and past, 60c she really began purring.

I'm SOOOO happy that it was simply a matter of me running low on fuel. Gotta remember that the FD doesn't get 25mpg+ and that when I start getting to the 200 mile mark in a tank I better get more gas and/or avoid sharp turns and steep hills! lol

So I went ahead and picked up another 3 gallons of fuel while I was running an errand in the DD. I put that in (along with a generous helping of premix) for a total of 6 gallons, plus whatever was left in the tank, and I'll top it off tomorrow while I'm at work.

Vid of it being alive!!

That's good news Levi!

Fendamonky 03-17-2013 08:22 PM

Yeah, I'm really happy (and a bit embarrassed) that it was such a simple problem.

It's been so damned long since my FD worked right that I forgot what kind of fuel economy they got!!!

TitaniumTT 03-17-2013 08:23 PM

That's good news man, now for the bad news, buy a new fuel pump and fuel filter.... that 044 is now garbage and there will be small bits of fuel pump lodged in the filter..... they will not tolereate being run dry or run w/too much vacuum..... sorry homer...

Fendamonky 03-17-2013 10:43 PM

Fuuuu..... How long ya think I've got before the pump completely craps out? It still pushes 43psi no problem. Think it can wait until the power tune? Or at least be useful for short (15-20 mile) trips while I wait for a new one to arrive?

WE3RX7 03-17-2013 10:56 PM

What power did the car make during break in tuning? I'd say the pimp issue is a time bomb.. It may go months it may not work tom. I've killed pumps before and not known it for weeks until im stranded somewhere...

Fendamonky 03-17-2013 11:00 PM

Partial throttle made 112whp/100tq.

That friggin SUCKS!! Bianca is gunna kill me when I tell her I gotta spend $200 on replacing a fuel pump... =(

Fendamonky 03-17-2013 11:16 PM

Hmm... thinking about it... you think I should replace my 044 with something different? Since I'll be going inline, and buying a new pump, anyway I might as well... thoughts/suggestions?

So your FD at partial throttle makes more than your Miata does at full throttle! :)

There's not enough time to do your swirl pot before DGRR. If you get something that you need a swirl pot for, your car won't make Deals Gap.

Fendamonky 03-18-2013 11:28 AM

Yeah, I just found a (lightly) used 044 over on the evil forum. It's getting shipped to me this afternoon. Direct drop-in replacement ftw
