Cliff Notes:
- When: Oct 24th - Oct 25th, 2009
- What: Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville to Cherokee
- Where: Friday night: Asheville, Saturday night: Smokemont campground/Cherokee.
Ok, I'll finally make a thread, with right about 4 weeks lead time.
Again, I'll be doing my annual run on the Blue Ridge Parkway, from Asheville, NC to Cherokee, NC (approx 90 miles).
The idea is to start off Saturday morning, catch a bite to eat in Asheville and then start the cruise about 9 - 10 am. Stop along the way for pictures and stretch our legs.
I'm planning to camp out in the Smokemont Campground ('http://www.mysmokymountainvacation.com/camp-smokemont.html') in the Smokey Mountain National Park on Saturday night. Last year I reserved a group site for up to 20 people, but since I don't remember how much lead time I need to do that, nor do I have the time to get out there to do it (can't reserve group sites online), I'm not getting the group site again. You will need to reserve your own camp site for Oct 24th!!! Probably in Loop B. It is $20 a night.. I have reserved site B023 for myself and up to 3 others. Site allow up to 2 cars and 6 people.
If you want a hotel, that will be up to you to find one in Cherokee.
Lodging Friday night in Asheville will be up to you. I can provide a place to sleep for a few people, LET ME KNOW!!! these will be First come-first serve. And I'm not completely sure how many I can support. And I can't promise a bed or couch, just a free roof over your head for Friday night at either my house or my parents. (they are cool with it... those who came last year know...)
Breakfast - ~8am Sat morning:
Cracker Barrel in Asheville
34 Tunnel Rd
Asheville, NC 28805-1230
I am going to ask that we do not try to get one large group of all of us. My reasoning for this it in the interest of time, not only in getting tables, but also for getting food. So pick a handful of people you wish to sit with and get a table. Also it will help if people are showing up at different times.
After breakfast, we will do the last gathering in the Ingle's parking lot across from the entrance of Cracker Barrel. There is gas right there so people can top off before we head out.
I am talking with Kevin (ZGN) about setting up a live feed for this event as well.
List of who's coming - campsite:

UPDATE!!! - 10 / 21 / 2009
Due to closures on the parkway, we will make a slight detour. We will meet up with some people around NC 191 and then take that exit off the parkway (in west asheville area) and make our way to NC 151 to get back on the parkway. more details below
as listed per http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm
Due to heavy rains, engineers determined that a high risk of slides existed in the area, necessitating this emergency closure. The closure will be in place until further notice. Pisgah Inn remains open and accessible from US Highway 276 at Wagon Road Gap.

the idea is to leave asheville sat morning and drive all the way to cherokee (approx 100 miles) on the parkway. we will camp out and then head back the same way sunday morning. the drive takes about 2 hours to drive straight through, but i do plan to stop and hang out, take pictures and just take our time getting there.
count me in, I will try to make this.
Also I an printing up another batch of RCC shirts. $15 each shipped, or $10 in person.

I just asked her and I don't think she'll make it. Driving through 4 states over a very short period of time does not make her a happy camper. She is still looking for a full time job. I won't know if I can make it for sure until maybe a few days b-4.

hot dogs - hamburgers - fire wood - chips - smores
Kevin, beat and abuse your car where it might break... or enjoy a nice leisurely cruise with friends and finish off with camping?
Dude you have it backwards. A leisurely cruise would be way more abuse than running at redline all day. If i make it I'll have to be at redline at least twice or she won't be happy.

8 miles south of the 191 access to the parkway, the road is closed. Nice concrete barriers and everything. But the road re-opens 4 miles north of the NC 151 access to the parkway, 5 or 6 miles total i believe. The detour is considerably shorter than if we had to make our way to 276 and we miss only about 16 miles of the parkway. Some of the people on here know 151 well...

Holly and Jeremy are coming up from Atlanta, they will be leaving out of Atlanta about 7:30 and getting up here about 10:30 to meet up with us.

Tray, I think Jeremy and I will be driving up on Saturday morning and meet up with you guys around 10AM at this exit
- NC 191 - South-West Asheville (exit 33 off i-26 for this one)
Does that fit within your schedule? Or should we meet at that spot a little later? 10:30 or so?
and then:
Yeah this all sounds good to me. So 10:30 at the rendezvous point. So we can probably leave around 7:30 and be good.

Tim, If we end up going you can swing by my place or I can meet you in Denver @150/16. I go to 40 via 16. Takes the same amount of time as hitting 321 in Lincolnton;) I hate being a contract worker. We always get screwed fist when bill time comes. Makes budgeting real fun:( Anywho. I'll know Friday at the latest. I'll call you then one way or the other. I really want to go.
I texted Robbie yesterday about the cruise, haven't heard back. I will try him again. Stu said he was trying to go. But I do not believe his car will be back together by then. But he may have buttoned it up.Or he may steal the Miata I would imagine.

One guy is bring a grill, they have fire pits at the camp sites. I believe alcohol is allowed for those who are old enough, details on that are on the camp sites website.

Kevin, if you want to drive over to Atlanta and stay here on Friday night, we all can grab some breakfast before we leave Saturday morning. Jeremy and I just voted not to get up at the buttcrack of dawn to drive up there.

List of folks for CB i know: Jamin, Toby, Bryan, Rico, Cory, Tim, and myself.
Kevin, if you want to come up Friday, you can sleep at the house with everyone else... its like an after party, but before the event...
Holly, as for breakfast, last year we rode into Cherokee and found an all you can eat breakfast buffet. But if we want to eat at the camp site, I'm good for that.
I was also thinking that when we get back into Asheville we would hit up an ice cream place where a friend works before we all go our separate ways.

Tim the correct answer to your question changes from season to season. However, my definition is constant, and is somewhere between 3AM to 6AM. :)
To be at CB at 8AM, I would have to leave around 4:30AM. This way I sleep in and let you guys have a leisurely breakfast, then drive to the other side of Asheville and meet up with us.
And of course, Kevin is totally crazy, so he has no problem driving all night and day. :driving:

Ah yes that would be me with the fuel issues since I was the only carbed car at the meet. My dual Facet fuel pumps are getting tired I guess (20 years old). Time to swap em out for a higher rated psi pump and a return regulator.

Ever thought of making this a full parkway event? Cherokee to the Va end? 400 miles I beleive and a couple nights out. As everyone else is I also await pics,.
I did think about doing that the first year. Gianny and I did a "test" run for getting travel time. Took a full day and still didn't get all the way. After looking at it, we determined that anything north of Boone, NC just felts like just a regular country back road. It wasn't the majestic beauty of the 90 mile stretch I focus on.
Another reason for the shorter trip is so that people don't have to sacrifice too much of their vacation time from work to come to the event.
Also wanted something that will be "manageable" as the event grows and more than 10 cars come. 400+ miles is a task!

I figured as much that it would be too big of a deal for a large grouop. I have done it on a motorcycle and had a blast. But I had no timeframe to keep to either.
Anytime anybody wants to do a run on the PRKWY give me a shout. If Tray doesn't /isn't able to house people, I have a place in Saluda, NC available all winter that we can stay at. Can sleep plenty in the main house and the roughnecks can take the unheated(exceopt by fire) other place.:D

 we all have our own styles for our cars...
yeah, it was a great trip. I had a great time as well. I will be doing it again next year! Same basic format as this year in how the event is actually conducted, but there might be a little more prep I do to make things run smooth. And I might finally get T-shirts for it!!! (Kevin... i may ask for your help on this...)

I am down for whatever man. If you drive it My place will be available. All things are weather pending. If there is any ice or snow they usually shut down the parkway all together.

 The rig I'm driving down laughs at that kinda crap, I will be trailering an FD back though soooooo... yeah. I'm waiting on confirmation on a few parts for my truck before I make the commitment for the weekend. Going through mad amounts of prep now, roof rack, 5gal Jerry, helper springs, new PS pump, tune-up with injector rebuilding - what's really holding me up - new muffler, and the most important things, Sat radio, I-pod interface and fridge... Not a cooler, but I'm hoping to borrow my buddies Engle Freezer/Fridge - that would be money.
We'll see, I'll keep ya in the loop, & Rico & Tray.

parkway is already being closed... south of 215 and north of craggy garden picnic areas... and a stretch closed between 191 and 151... it's a bit annoying really!

Why are they closing roads? Weather already down there?
BigIslandSevens
11-30-2009, 09:34 AM
My opinion on why they close down is that 1) it saves the Feds/states $ in upkeep during the winter months. Also that will save the road from heavy deterioration from salts, chains, plow blades, etc..
2) I believe it also gives the repair crews time to shut down the road and repair sections that are washing out, rock fall prone and such. Get the road ready for the "real" season.
It sucks, but we have plenty of fun roads to rip in the mountains. Tray will know more than me, but there are lots.

Yeah, I'd want to hit the closed roads with my truck though :D

Main reason the road's closed is weather. When I stopped on sat night (about 11:30 pm... nearly full moon) I glance over and was like "what's that?" then i walk over and i'm like "oh sh*t, it's snow!" That was on the north side of town. My two friends also commented a little later that the temp at the over look we hung out was noticeably warmer than where we had just seen the snow (i'm not sure the elevation change...).
And last night, as we were driving, there was a nice covering of ice on some of the rock faces that are right beside the road. And the rain today doesn't help things.
The stretch that is closed between 191 and 151 is out because of wash out. It was a very wet year for the area, so rock slides and missing roads are a problem on the parkway. It was only recently a section was reopened so you can get to Mount Mitchell from Asheville on the parkway. It was closed to motor and foot traffic and when they first opened it, 1/2 the road was still missing.
