View Full Version : S6/FD Stat. Gears in a Series 4 T2 engine?

Hey there, i'm in the process of rebuilding the engine for my '88 T2 right now and have came across some info that I did not find before...

I am planning on running S6 FD stationary gears in my engine due to the increased oiling from the 9 hole bearings.
Along with the FD rear oil pressure regulator and shim the front regulator.

Basically, I am looking for around 300-330 hp/trq to the wheels with a BNR stage 2 turbocharger and of course the other supporting mods needed as well.

I figured the S6 hardened stat gears and increased oiling capability would be a great thing to do to help insure a strong engine.

But now for my question....

When I originally searched around for info on using them, I found that it is a good upgrade to do while im in the engine.

So I bought a good used set of S6 stat gears and bought new .7795 bearings seeing as they have more clearance.
Plus mazdatrix only sells either the .7874 or .7795 bearings and its only a .0079 difference between them.

I have just recently found more info stating that if I use the S6 stat gears, I also have to use the same S6 components that are in the front cover...

Is it true that I have to use the S6 thrust bearings, thrust plate, end spacer, bearing plate, thrust washer, pump drive gear, etc...???

I would really like feedback from the longtime guru's who have done this modification.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answered on the Othar Forum, but I guess I can repeat it here...

You need at least the FD-specific Torrington bearings and spacer.
It's easier to use the FD front counterweight and "load" washer.
That load washer is designed to work with the larger Torrington bearing, and the FD front counterweight is machined to accept the larger load washer.

Making it work with the S4 rotors is going to be a pain in the ass... :(

Sigh....

Looks like I need to return my bearings I bought.

Thanks for the help RETed.
