Ok guys so I'm thinking of going with an aftermarket hood. Any suggestions? I was looking at a carbonfiber TII style hood from VIS (i think). Just wondering what else is out there?

here is a thread about hoods:

I like the TII hood but kinda pointless to spend bank on a product that is already light enough in aluminum form.....good luck.

I have a fiberglass one that looks like the one from rx7pro.com (or something)
functional reverse vented hood, drops engine bay temps down ALOT looks pretty hot too.

I've always been a fan of D-max (afterall, they tested their hoods to show a huge temp drop) but finding a dealer that can get it to you for under $2K (CF) is hard.

I can get a few that look like the Dmax hood for cheap...like $375 plus shipping cheap. They fit pretty decent, I fitted one on my car...just dont like the Dmax hood, myself.

True, but they're reasoning and animations behind that temp drop are all wrong.

I like the rear vent on this hood. Wonder if someone makes one with just the rear vent, priced well, and good fitment

the animations may be "wrong" but in the end the thermometer shows a huge temp drop, one way or another, it's working....and as far as the diagram, I'm not aerodynamics engineer but i still don't see how that area by the windshield sucks air IN towards the engine bay. Turbulence?? for sure, but air flows towards the back no matter what...
Pics of the hoods in question are in the thread I posted above.

I got mine from someone locally for 200 picked up new.
:)
it looks like this (but fiberglass and white)
http://www.xcarbonfiber.com/images/GTP-H8000.jpg
it also comes with rain inserts for the vents.
I'm not sure where to get them but they are the GT300 style and range from around 350+
I recommend it, you can see the heat come out the engine bay and with the angle of the radiator and how the air hits the car it just goes straight out, its fun on hot days seeing the heat mirage out of your hood at a stop light lol.

I'll get pics of the Dmax style hood this week, hopefully tomorrow. And i'll post them up, my buddy really wants to get rid of them. I probably wont get one fitted on a car, seeing as his FC is wrecked and I still have a top mount..If I get enough time this week, I'll try to snap some pics of one on my car.

The problem with each and every one of those hoods is the only thing they would be good for is maybe scavenging engine bay heat.
Im looking for a hood that I can duct directly with my intercooler to use vacuum to pull air through the core. I don't really see any of those doing that very well.
Most of them just look JDM Drift yo!

I'm still pretty keen on the Garage Kagotani hood (The one the 600hp SuperNow! Time Attack FC runs and everyone thinks is a Panspeed hood), they're inexpensive in comparison to similar hoods (yes, shipping will be a killer still), come in fiberglass for those wanting to paint the hood, and people mistake them for Panspeeds without the little turbo vent!

I can't tell you for sure if this is a GK bonnet because it has that small riser on the left side in the reverse vent and could either be modified or some other company's hood but its one of the ones that pop up for GK pics.

That's the plan when I can get someone to get one for me. I'll have to go back and redo the math for IC core sizing because I forgot what I had come up with for a 300-350 ranged setup and I already found a short Double pass Griffin rad I'll be using in the setup as well.

Last time I checked I believe they were about $650 in FG with the exchange rate a few months ago. Their online store disappeared but their site is http://www.kagotani.net/ so idk what's going on with them. I talked to Tom (aka Circuit Theory (http://rotarycarclub.com/rotary_forum/member.php?u=138)) about them and he said he could get them new. I would get in touch with him if your interested.
EJayCe996

In USD, the hoods themselves were like ~450 for fiberglass and nada clue for the CF. I know that Circuit Theory on the rx7club actually hangs out with/helps the Garage Kagotani guys but typically only sells what he has in his junkyard and doesn't like shipping hoods out to people (from Japan) unless they're in the containers he sends over to the US every once in a while, when he knows he's coming back for a few, to ship out stateside. I have inquired with RHDJapan not to long ago and they said they can get it, but they'd rather have a small GB to keep the price down.
^LOL^ Yea i should probably mention that the price I had was like as of a year-ish ago.

D'max works well with a v-mount setup. Your intercooler is in pretty much the same position as mine and mine sits perfectly with the hood vents.
My hood is a d'max replica. Fitment is ok, but not perfect. Cost NZ$800 so about US$500. Purchased it off a local company who imports them from the US so no doubt it will be a lot cheaper in the US

Chaser does but a FG hood would be the worst way to start. All the ducting, the vents, everything you'd need to make a mold or a form for. If you start with an aluminum or steel hood, you can build and then weld all your pieces on. Do all the fairing you need, and then pull a mold if you want to reproduce them. It would be an incredible PITA though to pull a mold. You'd actually need 2.

I could, well I know how... but I'd potentially ruin a hood and need to buy a but ton of resin, sandpaper, power sander and etc
TitaniumTT
05-30-2009, 12:02 AM
I wouldn't bother trying to pull a mold from an AL hood just to muck up the new piece trying to vent it. I would vent the AL hood first, do all the fairing that needs to be done, prime it, paint a few gallons of clears, cut it mirror smooth, wax the SHIT out of it and then pull the mold.

Word on the Aerocatch.
The time frame is more than likely however long it takes to get NEAR 15 interested people/deposits... We are talking FC people but then those of us who can afford to splurge on our FCs like they're FDs probably want this hood (You know... about 10 FC people with FD money)
I'll probably double deposit to help out as it still comes in way cheaper than getting a discontinued, genuine one from Japan.

Ok, since you seem to be in the know and the communcation with Shine, here's what I'm thinking......
1) How much is the Panspeed hood? Where can it be bought?
2) How much is that garage whatever hood and where can that be bought?
3) I don't think 15 FC people with coin for that hood exist nor is it blingy enough for them, afterall, it is functional. I'm wondering how much Ken would charge to make a batch of 5? I'd put down 1/2 now if he could have it done in a realistic amount of time. Otherwise, I think I'll build my own, put the $100 down and see what happens

From Ken:
Hey Ejayce,
The reason why I posted it up is to see if I would get at least 15. You're perhaps more in tuned with what the FC community wants and what theyre willing to pay. I actually ditched the Panspeed project a loooong time ago because there was not enough demand before. We're talking 2 years ago at least. That is why I was surprised that the hood had arrived as I told my source in Japan to sell the hood ( I bought it thinking there would be demand) in Japan at a lost if he could as the project is terminated. I guess he was never able to sell it and sent it over in the container. I figured that if I could not get enough individuals, I would simply sell the hood and terminate the project once again.
The main cost comes from prepping the original part to our standard. Im not sure how it even fits at this point. I prefer ome fitment. If it has issues, that's more work and $$$. We also produce nothing but quality standard molds at this point which cost $$$$. If 15 guys can't come up with $400 for a quality , rare, functional hood such as this, I don't know what to say. The reason I wanted to price to hood very low in my opiniion is because we wanted to cover the initial cost of the project right from the start and at $400 per piece, we will need at least 15 orders. Then after 15.... we would start actually making some money selling these at $500.
15 x $400 = 6000.
$6000/5 = $1200
You might as well buy the original if you're willing to pay that much. OF course I feel our version will be better and easier to acquire, but it won't be significantly beneficial. That is the delemma with selling 5 hoods.

To be honest, to those that WANT this hood that price + 100 shipping is still a deal in comparison to when you could get one brand new. Those few that do have this hood stateside have said they've spent a MINIMUM of 1,700 to get it to their door.
Granted you could probably get a used one to your door at about this same price, it A: isn't new, B: might not be in the best condition, and C: could take you months, maybe even years, to even find one.

Very true, although $1,700 is a tough nut to swallow for a body part. Especially on that I'll instantly be taking a DA to and then glassing the shit out of it...... just that much more reason I'm thinking about building my own. If I ruin a $400 hood, I wouldn't be nearly as pissed off.

He bought someone elses COMPLETED project car, did some LED light conversion, improperly wired up an electric fan, thinks he's the shit and spouts off shit in japanese, JDM this, JDM that, says shit like, that's how it's done in the homeland, and goes into every single motherfucking picture thread and says, that looks great, now slam that bitch on c/o's with mad tyte camber and stretched tires. I think I might actually stab him in the eye and then cut his fingers off if I ever met him...... then cut off his testicles so he could not pass on his substandard seed.
Thanks Phoenix, now I'm going to bed angry........ although .........

Enough of them, gotta get hoods made...Lemme see if SHP can get a Shine auto GB going soon for these hoods and just bomb twitter, facebook, myspace and whatever else forums you can think of. 1 should be easy, right?

Well, we got three here, maybe four, I say 3-4 on the evil forum. We should be able to get 10. I would think that would be doable. Lemme talk to my buddy and see if he wants one.
I would think that hoods would be the hardest part. Especially a hood like the FC's that is just so damn wide and flat. I had a hard time working my factory hood to get it to the condition that I wanted it and I still wasn't happy with it. Granted it was hit and some of the underbody bracing seperated from the skin which made blocking it really hard. To get something true like that in the mold is VERY hard in my experience.

Just create a new forum rule, Absurd amounts of stupidity, fad chasing, and saying "shit is dope," "slam that bitch," "Stretch," or "17* of camber minimum," will result in instant IP ban. Reincarnations will result in the removal of testicles. Further annoyances will result in death by horse rape.

Yes, horse rape. Ever see that Vid? Two guys, one horse? Apparently the guy died. cmanns was pissing me off one night on AIM so I told him that I wanted to vid him being killed by horse rape after I linked him the vid. He said he was going to sue me for internet bullying  I told him I wanted to stab him in the eye and then choke him with same horse while he was internally bleeding to death. EJayCe996

There were a couple things they've done that were roughly GB runs with a small stock created afterwards and once that stock was out they were done and I think that bumper was one of those items.

If it comes down to it I'll buy 2 at that price. There's always someone that pops up a month after the GB closes saying, "ah shite mang, that shit would look so dope on my ride yo! How could I have missed this. I musta been beetin the piss outta my ride slideways dawg:driving:."
Then my buddy will post up saying he knows someone that has it unopened and he'll sell it to you for the original asking price plus shipping plus the "You're a fuckbag" fee
Even better would be if he pops up after it closes but before they ship. That would be deal, then I just sell him my number and it's a different shipping addy that Ken puts on the box.
So you should buy two too. Phoenix should buy one as well. That puts us @ 12

I def could, i know someone who'd ask me where I got it/want one once he sees on on my car. Another still asks me about my rear diffuser that I still haven't put on because the car has a dent on the lower rear-most part of the quarter panel where the diffuser would mount (a good 1/4" gap too :() So basically it won't go on until I get the car repainted a custom red (blood red) and have the body shop do the dent in the process.

This is exactly what happened with Shine Auto's vented FC hood, they had to mold the vent to a stock metal hood because the JDM hood they recieved to make the mold was just too shitty.
They ended up with a real high quality product this way, fits like OEM.

the missing link to my car being ready is a complete rebuild... btw Titanium.... i noticed your very nice 13B-RE... and that you kept the sequential set up. how is it? is you uim ceramic coated or did you just paint it? my plan was also to do an RE.
Everything that touches exhaust or intake air was ceramic coated.
I love the REW twins. Show me a car that can spool as quick as those things in the lower gears. I touch the throttle in 5th @ 50mph and I get 15 lbs. Still have some fine tuning though. Dave and I are really looking forward to mucking around with the Motec and the sequentials on the dyno. Our goal is to get a smoother transition than the factory and almost twice the RWHP. Lofty but we'll see.
Here's some reading for ya ;)

ok.. so first off ... im impressed. alot lol. i only made it through the 2nd page so far but damn. you remind me alot of my friend sean. his has a blue FC that he has a write up on that is similar to yours. im determined to go through everthing just like you have. and im lovin the color. im actually going to school for collision repair so ive learned the welding and im workin my ass off on the paint and body work part of it. totally worth it. where are did you do the work at? i do have a ? about the sequential set up though... you musht have gone through and re done all of the vac lines and what not right? why the REW twins and no the the ones that came with the RE and .. i was obviously miss informed because i was told the REW twins wouldnt fit.. but that must be only if you use the REW engine too?

Thanks, Sean actually has my old housings..... assuming were talking the same Sean, FC3SMurray?
im determined to go through everthing just like you have. and im lovin the color. im actually going to school for collision repair so ive learned the welding and im workin my ass off on the paint and body work part of it. totally worth it. where are did you do the work at?
Expect it to take YEARS to go through everything. It's that time consuming. I did all the work in my garage. All the paint too, with the exception of the body itself. I couldn't get enough airflow to keep the paint clean, so I hit up a friend of the family who has a body shop and towed the car there to spray the body in thier DD booth.
i do have a ? about the sequential set up though... you musht have gone through and re done all of the vac lines and what not right?
I bought a set of industrial duty solenoids and redid every last van line. I even built my own vac/boost chamber and mounted it under the UIM. Everything is either stainless hardlines or thick ass silcone.
why the REW twins and no the the ones that came with the RE
REW twins are bigger, more plentiful, and can be serviced in the US. What do you do if the RE twind fail? You're shit out of luck. Not to mention I didn't think that the RE twins were capable of the 380-400 that I want to see.
and .. i was obviously miss informed because i was told the REW twins wouldnt fit.. but that must be only if you use the REW engine too?
The REW twins will fit in the same physical location in the engine bay regardless of what engine they are on. Plenty of people have dropped REW complete engines into the FC. Some different from others in terms of the mounting. If I was going to go ahead and use the REW engine though, I would build an entirely new subframe to drop the thing in. Well, ok, not an entirely new subframe, I would modify the existing subframe. The REW has some advantages over the RE, but not enough to justify using the REW over the RE based on the RE's advantages. More equal length intake runners, bigger plenum, bigger runners, etc etc etc. The main drawback to the RE are the stock exhaust sleeves which actually, the first engine that I bought was already rebuild using REW housings so i was GOLDEN. The second engine has the RE housings, but I swapped the REW sleeves in. The way they line up isn't ideal but the dyno will tell if I'm being paranoid or not.

So after not a lot of back and forth at all with RHDJapan, they decided to offer the GK hood on thier site. I'm REALLY impressed with Russell and the other guys @ RHDJapan, and I'm an old cranky not easily impressed bastard and they really came through. If my own little PJ falls through, I'll be picking this bad ride up for sure. Infact, I may just do it anyway, we'll see. Anywho, all should enjoy this. I like it more than the PanSpeed hood so I'm pretty much officially out of the Shine GB dealy.

Panspeed.... :suspect:.... GK
oh bugger.
For the record I LOVE THOSE GUYS AT RHDJAPAN! They basically went through their entire shift knob inventory that Fits the FC and got me all of the weights since I wanted something with a heavy feel.

That essentially looks the same from that angle, only its missing the second smaller vent over the exhaust....
JW Brian - but why do you like that one more? Its hard to tell if the lip around the vent is much taller than panspeed's...

Lol - just saw that they have it in CF... damnit... why do you make these decisions harder!!!

There is actually a lot of differences between the two. The Panspeed looks more geared to a H-mount type setup, the vent is further forward on the hood and the lower edges of the vent are almost perfectly parallel to the ground when the hood is closed. The vent is also slightly more wide and much longer with more lip on the vent. The GK has a more narrow and angled opening. On another note, the FCs I've seen running a GK hood all had front mounts.

Yea - I am using FMIC but still want the panspeed.. honestly, the GK would have my vote if it had the additional exhaust vent...
Shine hasnt released an update on the hood though or a CF price... I'm in no rush, but it would be good to know, lol...

Either one of those I would have to modify for my setup as I want the hood ducted to the intercooler. Something about the GK hood though appeals to me more.
Regardless, I'm building my own for now. Don't know when it'll be done, but I'm doing it.

That is very nice. Amazing amount of work to perform as well. Like others have said. Offer it up to the reproduction gods ASAP. My girls FC needs that.

He said they're further along than what's shown in this picture.
I can see it now... me having 3 hoods(TTT hotness, GK, Panspeed) and using the excuse of "1 for the track, 1 for car shows, and 1 for the street"

Everything about that hood looks too abrupt to me now. I think it's time to get in touch with Rob (fiberglass guy)

Which hood the PS or yours? I still think I'm going to do the PS hood if they ever finished it. I actually emailed Ken on Tuesday and told him I'm ready to buy it now if he's close to being finished. I'd really like to get my car to paint before the wedding! I really just need this hood and the front bumper... the side skirts I can deal with after the paint if needed....

Thanks Phoenix.
Looks like Shine finally made some progress and Bill is set for a deposit......... so what are the chances of your FC being @ DGRR '10? :suspect:
WE3RX7
09-16-2009, 10:22 PM
HA - I'm going to guess at the rate everything is moving that it wont be ready for DGRR '10 so for NOW I'll let you hold that "Best FC" title, but DGRR 2011 its all mine :)
But seriously, I've been talking to Ken at length over the last few weeks. I called him yesterday to put the deposit down on the hood and some other aero parts, but with my wedding coming up and the honeymoon afterwards, I wont see those things until mid-late October. It does sound like Shine will have the hoods ready to go in about two weeks though for anybody who's on the list. So far I'm the only CF one I know of...
