Looks like my work schedule may finally let me come this year for the first time. I'm considering crashing in my camper and just trailering one of the cars (coming from Michigan). Just curious if anyone else has ever camped at one of the campgrounds in the area or if anyone is planning on it this year?

Well, I was thinking about it in case I could not get a room... but I was thinking like, tent camping, not a trailer or w/e.

Well at least I may not be the only one. One of the appealing things about maybe camping it was the cost- for motorhomes or campers most of the campgrounds charge under $30 per night with full hookup (power, water, sewer). You'd be even better off in a tent- those rates we well under $20/night. I can't imagine rooms being under $100, though admittedly, I do still need to call to find out. It looks like there are about five campgrounds all within 10 miles of the lodge.

That is why we all bunk up in groups in large cabins. Between the usual Nashville are crew, we sometimes get crashers, which lower the rates even more.
I think the first year I went, we had 4 guys from SC crash in out cabin, it ended up begin $35 each for the entire weekend. Sweet!!

I was thinking of doing that. My current plan, is to have my dad come with me, which would cover gas, lodging, and food (hehe) but would also mean that I would need to get ear plugs because he snores like a bear. :D
Anyway, option two is to crash with other people, which I kinda prefer anyway!

Proxy,
Did you regret staying several miles from the group? Did you find any other folks for the rally were camping as well?

This was at a different time, not durring DGRR. We use to be at Fontana Village before also and people would camp there.

The one year some of my friends camped during DGRR I went and hung out at night at the camp fire, it was a little chilly but no big deal.

Any other good campgrounds besides Fontana Village?
I'm going to do some Dragon runs and also some other things such as hiking, horseback ridding (not my choice but I have to compromise), etc. As such it doesn't have to be TOO close to the Dragon, but within 30 minutes would be good.
