Looking at the January 2009 version of Option Magazine we found a section on quick and durable tuning at around the 500ps mark on a variety of engines. One of them was the 13B-REW with RE-Amemiya's mechanic Aoki-san's comments. The theme of the article is Get the Good Balance. Starting off with some maintenance tips on checking the ignition coils and making sure that you are cooling the engine correctly the article jumps right in to using 3-piece Apex Seals as the OEM 2-piece units are not recommended for over 450ps. Obivously recommending the 3-Piece RE-Amemiya seals it is also noted that these 3-piece seals are also used in the RE-Amemiya D1 GP FD3S. Turbo selection for this amount of power is best selected between the HKS T04R series and TRUST T88 series. RE-Amemiya has always chosen TRUST Turbines and their selection for the Tsukuba Circuit version FD is the T88-33D 17cm. Keeping the secondary injectors as is and upgrading the primaries to 850's looks to be just enough at this power while keeping the fuel pressure right at 3.2kg/cm with the use of an upgrade fuel pump and regulator (in this case RE-Amemiya selected the Nismo Fuel Pump and SARD Type-RJ Regulator). Engine management is done through the HKS F-CON V Pro+e01. With the maps finely done and boost set at 1.0kg/cm2 along with a slight side port Aoki-san states that this is his recommendation for building a quality power and solid performing 500ps FD3S.
Obviously the boost levels could be higher for more power but the theme of the article is Get the Good Balance...

they kill me with using such outdated turbo's. and 500ps on 4 850s? i find that very hard to belive. also i think the apex seals got swithched around, as the factory ones are 3 piece and can cause problems. most switch to 2 piece. mazda does make 2 piece seals as well, though i dont know what they came in if anything.

We have built many 500 hp 13brew engines using the mazda 2 piece seal with very little if any issue. If you have properly balanced internals you should have no issue, I have had many issues with the 3 piece mazda seals though. If you look at rats 10 second Fc with a small street port and 2 piece mazda seals you will see a reliable engine that has made over 500 hp to the wheels(over 600 at the crank) for 3+ years

Thanks for sharing that with us though, always nice to know what a master like re amemiya is doing .

they are most likely talking bhp not rwhp

what is PS? never heard that term regarding an engines power rating

In japan, that is the power measurement, just like Kg for boost.

oddball knowledge time.

PS is an acronym for a german word meaning "horse strength" which is a direct reference to horse power.

Well just like any business, they will push and say they have the best result with the products they produce and sell ( 3 pice seals). Greedy sponsors RE, meaning the they provide them with the free parts and RE makes sure they deliver the best performance with that product. Its perfect business strategy. A company like RE stating that they use greedy parts and they work phenomenal, will boost sales.

In order for RE to make up for the free performance parts they provide them with, will put Greedy inspired custom fd's on the show floor and local shows.

Pferdestärke = PS = .986 hp which is why the JDM GTR, Supra, and S8 Rx-7 were rated at 276hp.

I'm interested in their method of tuning. They seem to get a lot more power out of the stock (mostly) engine.

What is their definition and duration of "RELIABLE"? I don't know if any of you have looked at the knock sensor data from a high hp 13brew but its insanely unstable to be called reliable...with meth/water injection it can be lowered to a less dangerous zone. (11)

^You also have to consider that our knock sensors suck donkey balls and will pick up EVERY little ping anywhere.

That being said, I'm shopping for water injection right now haha. Regardless of whether the knock sensor keeps saying the sky is falling and I don't believe it, it's better to be safe than sorry and I want to have the insurance there.

I noticed the fuel injector sizes too. First of all it seems backwards. Most of the time people are more likely to keep the 550s and go higher on the secondaries, not the other way around.

I do love RE-Amemiya though. It's a dream of mine to visit their shop someday and meet them. Too bad their parts are so freakin expensive haha.

you can't go wrong with meth/water injector. All kits provide results. That is assuming you have a decent pump and nozzle size + location.

anyone else notice that they mention that they use the STOCK secondaries and 850cc primaries in the first post?
Are they reaching the max inj. duty at those power levels or something? It doesn't seem right...

I'm still a turbo noob but isn't a T88 kinda big? Seems like 500hp at 1 bar might be doable with a big turbo like that. I just don't know about the fuel setup.

isn't ignition breakup an issue at those power levels?
