Has anyone ever had the metal LIM/engine gasket fail? I have a customers car here right now that I just cant figure out. Has an exhaust leak and a boost leak somewhere. Tubro manifold was just machined flat on all three mating surfaces and new gaskets installed. Car builds 3-4lbs of boost like it should then holds there and will eventually hit 7-8lbs by 7500rpm. This is a to4r with .84 hotside so it should be hitting 7-8lbs by 4500rpm. I am completely puzzled at this point as to what is going on. No obvious vac leaks but the car is pulling a lower than normal vacuum, engine is completely healthy. I feel like I am going in circles with this car and really want to figure out what is going on with it.

i heard of this happening to an fd at a tuning session i was at. they replaced the gasket and then tuned it with no problems.

i would say just swap it out since the car is single and much easier to take apart.

I think I may have found teh problem, the customer had someone else do the powder coating work on the UIM and LIM, and they powder coated the mating surfaces, I am going to put some different Manifolds and new block off plates and hope that will fix the problem.

Thanks Dregg for the input.

Pull Turbo kit 4 times to install new gaskets, check wastegate, machine turbo manifold, inspect turbo(about 10-12 wasted hours and a PITA)

Go thru all that headache and still feel like you are chasing your own tail until you pull the LIM to check the metal gasket only to find it in great shape. However, upon pulling LIM I noticed the guy who did powdercoating work managed to get some of the LIM to Engine mating surface powdercoated also. Put on a stock LIM and now all of a sudden we are hitting 10lbs by 4k rpms:).

Funny how much stuff you will "fix" when trying to find the problem that never needed fixed in the first place. Oh well, lesson learned, take all Powder Coating work to RotaryResurrection.com in the future.

Car feels great.

^Great plug for a "competitor". :icon_tup: It's always the simplest things that cause the most problems.

"Competitor" :) He is a great friend and the reason I am still in this business. We help each other a lot, you would be surprised at the amount of help given from rotary business to rotary business between some of the successful companies.

I had similar problem and it was dirt between the LIM and engine that caused all sorts of issues... The LIM couldnt sit correctly and was leaking air... At least you have a single.. this was twin turbo... Yikes! What a pain!

IF this would have happened on a twin car I would have shot somebody.

This was the yellow car that was in Birmingham that everyone thought had a bad turbo on it except for Landers and Brian at BNR. It has a brand new TO4R on it so I knew that couldnt be the issue, some thought it was the intercooler but I just couldnt believe that either. Took it out for another test drive before the owner came to pick it up last nite and was hitting 15lbs at about 42-4300rpms and just blistering the tires. Got me a little excited about getting my car back on the road.
