I just got off the phone with guys who run Nopi Nationals and they told me that NOPI NATIONAL IS CANCELLED!!

Due to several rained out NOPI events and bad economy, they decided to cancel this years event... First time in 20+ years!!

Makes me nervous about the car world.....

The first year I went (2002) I was too late and it was hell trying to get out of the park. The second year I went (2005) the showing was less than impressive. There weren't a whole lot of quality show cars or trucks.

Here is what I found..

July 16, 2008 It is with great regret that NOPI Motorsports, LLC has suspended operations for the summer and fall 2008. This will include NOPI Drag Racing Series, NOPI Drift Series and the NOPI NATIONALS Motorsports Supershow. The company is undergoing an organizational restructuring in light of severe adverse affects of a disappointing spring season. The economy and unfavorable weather resulted in underperformance of all spring events. Michael Meyers, president of NOPI Motorsports, reports that NOPI Motorsports is working with its clients and sponsors to minimize the uncertainty going forward. This is a reflection of the economic times in which we currently live. The countrywide economic and industry downturn has caused a slowdown and tightening of belts.
This affects everyone and companies, at all levels, and NOPI Motorsports is no different. We understand the position this puts everyone in and we hope you can find in your heart to work with us through this terrible time. All of you are our friends and we have felt for many years that we were all a big family.

To add to my previous comment... The 1st year there were nicer cars/trucks/vans in the parking lots than there were inside the event the 2nd year I went...

I completely understand why they've cancelled the rest of the year's activities and are (I'm sure) scaling back next years events as well. Another by-product of the economic down-turn. I don't remember the last major recession affecting me very much (early 90s) because I was too young to know what was going on and for the beginning of the 2000s I was still in college so everyone I knew had no money. ;)
Now it's a different matter. I can't make any of the meets 90 miles down the road b/c of the cost of gas, oil (for PM work), groceries, and health care costs. Let alone drop another $60 for tickets to an event for my family.

Not the reason it was cancelled. Nopi as a company has officially gone belly up. All of their events have been cancelled, not just the Nationals. Not investing $ back into the company & employees. Investing it into your own personal wants & greeds, the younger Mr. Myers screwed over a company that his father had worked so hard to build.

I sure hate to hear this. I used to go every year when I lived in AL. The bad thing was it was getting more and more expensive to go. I think the first year I went('98 I think), it was like $25 to enter for the week-end. The last year I went('04), it was like $75-$80 for the weekend.

I had no idea about the state of the company. I was just assuming that the downturn in the economy as well as "poor" turn-outs were the cause...

Atlanta Motor Speedway is getting together with a few of the sponsors that Nopi essentially dicked over, & there is plans to still have something that weekend. Here is a link on another Forum.
