View Full Version : Oil wetness/dripping under turbos?

OK, I figured I'd post up a technical question about an issue I'm seeing on my car.
I have 99 twins with about 25-30k miles. I'm seeing a decent amount of oil wetness and drips under the snails. I've read a bunch of threads that seem to contradict each other about why I might be seeing this. Possible causes seem to include:
1. Turbo oil lines leaking
2. Internal turbo oil gaskets/rings worn
What are your experiences on what the cause may be?

Number 2 is likely your issue but it is possible for the oil drain lines to leak a little. If they arent smoking horribly I wouldntt worry about it. This is a common issue when you have the stock twins rebuilt. They wont smoke but in most cases will immediately drip oil.

I always understood that if the internal seals were worn it would just blow out the exhaust. Is that incorrect?
I get absolutely no smoke under throttle or off throttle after a boost run and the response/performance is really good overall fwiw.

No, they can leak externally without smoking out the exhaust. Maybe we could get BNR to chime in on this thread if he sees it.

whats up guys.
Carbon seals leak a little naturally. What you need to do is remove the Y and the inlets. You may need to stick the secondary inlet duct on a belt sander and make it flat. Then you will need to put a film of Grey silicone on the gaskets and reassemble. That should take care of the leaks around the compressor housings.
If it is coming from the drains, then you need to put a very light film of grey on the drain gaskets. The metal gaskets from the factory aren't very good on sealing.
After that if the engine smokes, its just time to weigh your options.
