"When the first 2009 RX-8s arrive at dealers, customers also will find an extension to Mazda’s warranty, extending coverage on the unique rotary engine to eight years/100,000 miles (whichever comes first). The balance of the powertrain warranty remains at five years/60,000 miles, and the basic warranty at three years/36,000 miles.

The warranty extension is proof of the company’s faith in the rotary engine, a hallmark of Mazda’s engineering leadership since 1967 when it first appeared in the Cosmo Sport 110S. Additionally, Mazda will extend this eight year/100,000 mile warranty retroactively to all existing 2004-2008 model year RX-8s – again, to show their support of the longevity of the engine. Customers with questions regarding the warranty should contact their local Mazda dealership or the Mazda Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-222-5500. All existing RX-8 customers were contacted directly by Mazda to notify them of this warranty change, beginning on May 30, 2008."

Now if their regular warranty didn't blow... :( 3/36k is pretty sad for bumper to bumper.

My dealership did full warranty work for 5/60k. I guess they must like me.

its good coverage but you have to be a little careful. we just took one in for a transmission issue, and they wrote it up as customer pay, but if its warranty it turns into warranty.

then they spent 1.5 hours, did nothing except print a bulletin that says if the car does this dont fix it.

they only charged $70 for that, it was very shady on the service writers part, if he gets a survey, he's getting torpedoed. dealership lost too, tech spent way way too much time.

so anyways, just be aware that they may ask you for a diagnonsis charge, its supposed to turn into warranty, if the part is covered, but it might not.

The engine on my 04 went bad again. Compression is low on one lobe of rotor #1. It is one month out of the 4/48 warranty (under in mileage). It took Mazda 1 1/2 weeks to figure out if they were going to cover it under the engine/drivetrain warranty. It will be another week to get the engine here and install it. They don't provide a rental/loaner car after the original warranty is out.

Mazda is getting pretty lazy on their warranty, they just increased the engine warranty to 8yr/100k but they still try and find a way out of ponying up a new one! I can't believe it took them even a couple minutes to decide on the warranty...hello it's in black and white!

so, if I buy an 04 with 40K miles, it'll be covered by the warranty? Is this passed on to second-hand buyers?

I dunno guys, I feel like the RX-8 is the Windows Vista of the rotary world, both the previous version and the latter versions are so superior in terms of nearly everything that it doesn't make sense as to why it's there in the first place.... :D

+1 for Windows 7!

I don't honestly see that as the case despite everything that's happened. The RX8 produces the most N/A power of any other rotary vehicle that's been built by Mazda to date. The handling and performance characteristics make it a real contender on the track.

The issue with the motor has been addressed and was related to there not being enough OMP output in the lower operating ranges of the motor or the fact that people are not driving their vehicles in RPM ranges where carbon deposits are removed.

I've currently got 80,000 miles on my RX8 which is a 2005 and I'm still on my factory motor, factory tranny and factory clutch. I believe the survival of my motor has been due to pre-mixing, using high quality synthetic oils, and a combination of increased OMP from the accessPORT and injecting 2 cycle via the sohn adapter.

This is all with my RX8 being my daily driver and seeing moderate track use from autocross to HPDE.

I have no doubt about the quality of the car. It simply requires some extra care and good quality stuff.

There have been plenty of issues with the previous generation RX7's that people seem to forget. All vehicles are prone to problems.

Interesting point you make there.

I recently bought a one owner 1989 GXL RX-7.

The owner never drove it hard enough to open the secondary ports.

As a result, the mechanical actuators for the 5th and 6th ports could not open the ports, as the shafts to the ports were so carboned up they would not move.

The flange on on of the shafts had actually been broke, and someone had made a lame attempt to repair it.

The shafts had to be driven out with a hammer and replaced. Yes, I soaked them first in PB Blaster.

Other carbon related issues are clearing up gradually, as the new owner has a somewhat heavier foot than the previous owner.

It's no surprise then that issues could creep up in the RX-8 when not driven hard on occasion.

so you add premix to your rx8 tank w/ the omp system? I like

my friend is looking at rx8s so I should tell him about the warranty..

I know a guy who bought an 04 RX8 when it first hit the dealers lot. Even though it was affected by the low OMP output issue, he still got 108K before the engine tossed an apex seal. He premixed lightly with 2 stroke or MMO religiously. After having to buy the new engine, and getting the ECU update, he still premixes, but a bit higher quantity.
A couple weeks ago, I met a guy who just bought a 40th ann edition, and I suggested he start doing the premix as a supplement to the stock OMP, just to be safe. He had heard about premixing, but wasn't sure why it was suggested to him, until I explained the whole concept.
For the record, I still have the OMP on my FB, but I still add premix, just to be safe. The OMP can fail or leak, and not be detected until after the damage is done. For this reason alone, I strongly encourge all rotary owners to supplement the OMP with a premix, because once the damage has been done, it cannot be undone, without mega-cubic-dollars.
