not good... Had issues. Fingers X'ed it being an ingnition issue rather than a motor issue! Going back over my logs they look very crazy. I could not get a run in with out total ignition break up= no power at the top of 3rd and all 4th gear. First pass= Fell on its face out of the hole but pulled like beast all the way till the 1/8th mile then I had to coast the last 1/2+ of the track but still ran a 12.1.. second run same kinda of result but break up started in 3rd. Last qualifing pass was about the same pulled thru 2nd before break up started. Even with all the issues I had it was a fun day but I need a break for a few weeks before I even try to figure the car out....Fun seeing and hanging out with Don, Phil, Chris and Brian...

congrats Phil!
Well I think its my motor. Had to put the plugs back in to fire up and get it off the trailer this morning. Went ahead and pulled the L2 wire off the coil before I started it up. It fired up but idled a tad worse than before. I could here the coil firing away. I put the wire back and and it ran a tad better. My thought at this point is I lost compression on face. Maybe a side seal stuck... Either way it needs a compression test first. I hope I am wrong but thats my gut feeling at this point. Hmmmm wonder if Fritz still has that full bridgeport motor..
Herblenny
05-19-2008, 12:32 PM
Dang Mike! I hope its not your motor.. I guess only way is to get a compression test done.
Also, you need to talk to Luis. I still think he's one of the best builder around.

Mike,
Is your engine grounded pretty well?? When I had my black FD, I had issues at high RPM and it was ground. When I put new ground on, it idled and rev'd much better.
sk8world
05-19-2008, 04:57 PM
just stock grounds but I have cleaned them and made sure they were good. I will go over the ignition and compression test or atleast hold my hand over it while it gets cranked as I could not here too well at the track.
How the hell did i miss the boat on this one :dunno:? WTF its not listed in the event section .
nice photos, I went to a small show in helena,al they had about 25 mgb's a few ferrari and porsches one lotus elise, one STI and one FD, mine.

Mike's car looks so sick on the track.
Thanks man! It will be awhile before its back on the track. I just pulled the leading plug and turned it over by key. All faces have compresion... Pulled the rear leading and did the same but its missing a beat. I will do a real compresion test before I pull it out. Not sure if its bad what direction I will go as far as the next motor. I may talk with Luis but leaning towards taking it to PFS and leting him do the build and tune. Time will tell and its not going to happen any time soon.

Dang, hate to hear that. Almost thought I screwed mine up the other day trying to run zero-split timing, but thankfully it was ok when I returned it to the old setup.

yeah, its sucks big time as I was really wanting to hit a ton of events this year. I wont give up but it will take me a bit before I can drop a new motor ($) in it...

05-20-2008, 12:09 AM
Completely understood. Wanting to go bigger on the motor setup or keep it the same?
sk8world
05-20-2008, 12:28 AM
not really sure. I dont think I will go with a larger turbo but may change the motor to full bridge. More power= more breaking and I am not intersted in that anymore.. Atleast for tonight. Full bridge would make the power I want at much lower boost. The again I may just go with a same set up but lower compresion rotors.

What are you running right now, big street or half-bridge?
SPICcnmFD
05-20-2008, 07:08 AM
I thought it kinda sounded like it was getting 3 good pulses than a quick one when you were turning it over instead of 6 good quick pulses, but those Jamaican guys thought different.
That's still kinda weird how it acted the first two runs, then you put the colder plugs, which should have been safer, and then it blew.
Herblenny
05-20-2008, 12:22 PM
It did sound little weird but since he was able to crank it warm and so quick, I thought the engine was fine. But who knows. I would check your through and make sure everything is ok. If you are using stock ground, I would upgrade it.

05-20-2008, 03:50 PM
Well I was close to buying Fritz' bridgeport he had for sale but it sold today. BAck toi the drawing board.
So if you had to pick the best engine builder to build a high HP drag motor who would you pick?
1. PFS gets my vote...

Abel Ibarra, Carlos Lopez, Crispeed
sk8world
05-20-2008, 11:27 PM
I may talk with crispeed.. I have always wanted to build one myself but never tried. I feel like if I want to keep tracking it then stuff is going to break. I can not keep dishing out 4-5k every time like some. You know, family first... So I just dont know at this point. I have a spare core I could send the center section out for balancing and try my hand at porting and put it back together then build my other for a spare?? But even after that so much is in the tune with high boosted motors. I feel if I had a top notch builder do both I may come out better..
Herblenny
05-21-2008, 08:51 AM
Well, there are several...
I like Luis because he's local.
Crispeed is in FL and have proven with tuning... Is he a good engine builder, I think he knows his stuff
Rick Engman in ATL is building engines such as Renesis.. so, I say he would build a REW. Last time I've heard he build one for someone, I've heard he was awesome!
Carlos Lopez in FL is amazing builder with ton of build experience. I say he's the man with all the tools and most rotary race team goes to.

05-21-2008, 11:33 AM
Well I would be all over Louis but I feel its best for me to have a builder whom has built high HP-boosted motors. I am sure Luis is great but when I spoke to him he had not done such. I personally still am happy with BDC and his work. For the price you have a hard time beating it. Again, I think my motor is the highest HP that any BDC motors have made. $2500 no core, not bad... I just want to go with a proven set up that has room to grow. Say I run my 4094 and decide to go gt45 and crank 30psi out... I am so mixed up right now. I pulled all my parts out as I was going to part them all out to help pay for a build, then I putting them back up thinking I was going to build one myself, wake up this morning and supras sure seem nice... LOL....
Herblenny
05-21-2008, 02:03 PM
Mike, I hear ya.. I think if you want high HP drag/street car then I would highly consider Supra. Don't get me wrong, I love FDs but like yourself, I've seem so many of them go down on the drag strip and so many Supras make it down the drag strip without issues.
If you were to build a road course/track car, I would say stick with FD but high HP drag, I say go with the Supra. I would!!! I say just put your FD back to twin and enjoy driving down the road... and have a Supra for Drag events... Dang, I want a Supra now:)

Supras are nice, but 'o too common.

Bore and stroke your ported motor and install bigger valves ,that is what Phil told me to do with mine . Then I will need an oil pan brace and two engine torque braces

Didn't really want to start a new thread for this so.
There is a track weekend at Barbers if anyone wants to come hang out and keep me company. I'll be there all day Sat. and Sun. It's with the BMWCCA, should be some nice BMWs and Porsche's, probably a few GT3s, a good many vette's, and the usual mix of other stuff. I'm going to try and see if I can give some rides so if you come and want to ride bring your helmet just incase.

It's this weekend. I'll also be out again in 2wks but I know for a fact I can't give rides then. You may want to call me before you come to see if you need your helmet. I'm not instructing so it's really up to how good of a mood the people running the event are in if they let me. It says no in the documents but I'm going to ask anyway.
