OK..
The car runs fine when its warmed up.. But when I first crank in the morning (first time), the idle hunts and after 20 sec it smooths back out.
This only happens when I first crank for the morning but when weather is warm or engine is warm, no issues.
Any suggestions??

first thing that came to my mind was too thick oil
then I wondered if it might have to be related with the O2 sensor. It needs to be heated, thats why it has 3 or more cables

I was also thinking that it was the O2 sensor..
I also just read that could be MAF sensor being dirtied up by excessive oil?? More issue with K&N filter?? I'm going to clean the MAF and install HKS twin power this weekend.

I'm running the K&N now for a little over 1K miles and no problems.
It could still be MAF due to your car's mileage. Also, if you hang out in the higher RPM range where the stock Mazda fuel maps are really rich, and the o2 sensor is original, it wouldnt be surprising to hear that its gummed up too...

WE2RX7,
I don't think its the O2 sensor..
I cleaned the MAF saturday morning and the car still idled like shit (cold start). But when warm it cranks and starts fine.
I the put the HKS twin power on Sunday and during cold start, the idle was horrible! It would hunt and then couple of times the engine will just shut down. I'm going to get a new O2 sensor and ground the fuck out of the engine:)
Regarding HKS... I noticed slight more power out of my butt dyno. Car also seem bit more responsive to the throttle.

What do you guys think about Purge Solenoid being the issue for my cold start idle??

have you tried the thermal bypass mod on the TB?

probabley will not have any effect on your issues, I think I was thinking of something else when I posted it. Its essentially the TB cooling bypass like you can do on the FD where you splice the two coolent hoses from the TB together.

Kevin,
I was always told if compression is low, i would have harder time starting when warm... Is it not true?? As you saw toward the end, when warm, the car starts fine.
Also the battery is new and I was told its the upgraded starter.
This weekend, I'll take the TB off and clean it... actually, I can't do anything until either I get the 7 all put together or I get my 4runner.. Dang, It sucks! Thanks again for the advice!

No... No coolant lost nor any smoke. Its really weird as warm start is fine and etc.
I'm going to take the TB off and replace it as I have a spare one. I think if I fix it, I'm going to put it on the market and just drive my 4runner as a daily. It take about the same gas and I'm just fed up so far with this car.. What do you think I could get??

Can the TPS be adjusted on these cars?
Then of course, is the coolant temp sensor reading right?

Sorry to hear that Phil. I'll trade you my fd roller with burnout kit, feed hood and whatever else is laying around for it.
I really am enjoying mine and am conteplating getting rid of the FD for an 8 Roller and then work on a 20b swap for it. Be alot harder to pull off but I just really love the 8 right now.

I hear ya Kevin...
Well, I think you are right about the TB.. I was able to start it in the first try by cranking the engine and as soon as it starts, tap the gas and starts fine.
I been working on the 7 all week and got it finished last night.. I'm going to start working on the 8 today. We'll see..
Jonathan, Hmm.. its tempting:) But I dont think wife will go for it..

I did that same thing (start and immediately tap the gas) and today the engine light came on:)
But the car drove fine to work. I really need to take the TB out and clean it... I might to that tonight.

LOL!! Kevin, I know.. I'm lazy and the damn Auto EXE brace is in the way.
I was going to do it after work yesterday and I was called away by wife! Damn wife!
Another question, How do you pull code? and how do I look up what each of these codes are?

Thanks Kevin! I have no clue about these OBD junk:)
I have a friend who owns a shop and I think he has one for his shop. I'll head down there and check it out.
If I have time today, I'm going to take the TB out and give it a cleaning.
What do you think about purge solenoid? I noticed its covered in dirt!!

Problem SOLVED!!!!
It was in fact TB!! I took it off and inside looked like SHIT! Tons of Carb build up!! I sprayed bunch of Carb cleaner and I started to see the opening when flap was down.
I think the problem was that not enough air was getting in during cold start.
I reset the ECU and started this morning and cranked right up and idled perfect!! Now, I need to decide if I should still sell the damn thing or keep it..

Update...
I didn't get to drive it this morning after start up.. Just warmed it up.
Anyhow, I just took it out and the car is AWESOME!! now, I don't want to sell it:)

I know! I took it out for a test drive after work and man! Did it drive so much better! Idled and it actually felt more responsive. I got it up to about 110 on the interstate and the car felt great!
This is what I'm going to do Every year...
1. New Plugs
2. New Coils
3. New Wires
4. Clean air filter
5. Clean TB :)
Its about $300 maintenance cost but I think its worth it if it give me worry free drive:)

Noted for future reference.
Do you really need to replace the coils that often?

Can they be relocated so the engine heat doesn't accelerate their wear? Like the FD guys.

add a fuel filter in there somewhere...
I was told the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump.. Is this correct??

I was told the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump.. Is this correct??
Yes this is correct.

Yes this is correct.
So the Rx8 does not have a inline filter like the rx7's??
Is this filter the sock on the fuel pump pick up??
