In all honesty, it doesn't matter too much to me. But slightly later in the year (like end of Apr.) would lessen the chances of the Canucks having to leave when there's snow out lol
Although this year we narrowly escaped it hehe.
But whenever - sign me up!!

And as far as when, well you know I'm down for anytime!

Well, They are talking about that.. paving the road and such..
Also, they told me that they will have something by the tennis court as venue stage (bands and such). I guess we just have to wait and see:)
Also, I've found out that they have another property. I'm hoping to go check it out.. either for BOTD (if I don't goto Seven Stock) and let you all know.
What I really liked about Nantahala is the fact that we had the whole place to ourselves.. and hope those who couldn't stay there will book it earlier:)

I vote from the 9th to the 12th, this year's event was too short, there were too many things to do and not enough time to do them all. Also we should have a couple of organized runs through the dragon and the skyway.

Phil, pm me the price of what they are charging you guys for the whole resort and how many people it needs to sleep. Remember me telling you about the company I used to work for. The location would be much more convenient for afternoon entertainment and much more entertaining to those whose wives would not like to be stuck 2 hrs out in the middle of no where.
The location would be right outside of pigeon forge and only about a 30-35 min drive to the far end of the dragon(lake area). The cabins would blow the ones we stayed in out of the water and all the roads would be easily accessible for the rx7s. Im sure I can get a good deal if we block off a bunch of the cabins but I am unsure of the current price you have worked with the place you used this year.
Being closer to pigeon forge we could go into town for dinner, go cart racing(would be fun to have a competetion and with a group this large we could get huge discounts at the nascar park) and the fact that the place is only about 15 mins off of I-40. Also the resort is building a cable sytem that you hang from above the tree tops that reaches about 55-60 mph as you are flying over the mountains on a pulley system. Just an idea and figured this way you could probably create even more growth for the event by encouraging people to bring their wives or families. www.sterlingspringsresort.com is the name of the site and the Full Day Spa will be completed by the time the event rolls around next year.
Nice, Let me know when you guys are planning a test run :)

I managed the resort for a year :) I have a pretty good relationship with them :) Im telling you it is way nicer and much more convenient. If they cant make the pricing competetive then it isnt going to happen anyway. I live in Knoxville, TN and NV was a damn near 2 hour drive for me, I could only imagine what it was for other people. Just figured this would be more convenient for pretty much everyone and also be more invitating for those who would like to include their families.

Being yet another local myself (live in Maryville, work in Knoxville), I would agree that being close to Pigeon Forge would definitely be a plus as far as women, children, and food options are concerned. This could also allow for a longer event if desired, as the activities available would increase by a long shot. However, you guys talk about being close to the Maryville side of the dragon and it looks to me like it would be atleast an hour drive, if not longer. That's assuming that you're going through Wears Valley, Townsend, and across Foothills Parkway. Just seems like a LONG way away to still be calling it the DEAL'S GAP Rotary Rally. My 2 cents :)

NV was already further from Deal's Gap than Fontana , but still not too bad of a drive to get up there ... PF would be at least an hour each way , depending on traffic ... I personally liked the fact that NV was secluded , and not in or around a bigger city , one of the attractions in my opinion ... yes , PF has more amenities , but I thought everything was just fine at this years event

Look what David Jerome has started... LOL!
As an organizer, its hard to find a place who's willing to deal with us and work with me. I would in NO way switch location unless there is a significant change in price and their willingness to work with me. Great thing about Nantahala is that I now know what to expect... which will save me GREAT deal of time next year!! Going to a new place has to go out of their way to accommodate me and all you guys... I am in NO position to spend as much time last year (or this years DGRR 08) for next..... Its just not worth my time as my time increases in value every year:)
At this point, I've told David what he needs to know and I'll await for his PM... I also don't want to keep waiting just to find out what the deal is.. So, I'm going to wait til end of this week to let Nantahala Village know about my commitment... If David can not provide me with a number by This coming Sunday, Then I'm just going to commit to Nantahala Village... Sorry David!
And for those of you coming from Knoxville area.. Trust me! I would love to have this event by where I leave. I understand it would be shorter drive for you but I have to pick a location not just by distance but how they are going to treat me. Nantahala Village has really surprised me and this point, something drastic has to happen for me to switch!

To me, the drive to the village from the Dragon was nearly as fun as the Dragon itself.
Going to a less rural area wouldn't appeal to me. The seclusion as mentioned was very nice and the scenic curvey roads you have to take to get to the Gap were more leisure then anything else.
I really enjoyed the place and the event where it happened this year. To me, complaints about distant driven from people who live less then three hours away is moot. I drove 8+ hours just to do the event plus see the Gap and the roads around it. I don't want to be stuck in some city battling moron's in in traffic with their Camry's to go shoot the gap :)
My personal vote would be for Natahala. Beautiful scenery, beautiful cabins, great food and good people!

We are just trying to show you guys the light, I could personally care less. I figured most rotor heads are like me and adrenaline junkies. We would have the cable system on site to swing from at 50mph, great food, much nicer facilities and roads. NV wasnt bad by any means, however, it is no where near on the same level as the place I am recommending. I know that I personally paid 11.00 to eat two biscuits with gravy at NV and thought to myself, "I guess that is the price you can charge when you have no competition in 15 miles"
I figured everyone would love the idea of go cart racing and the cable system, I must be out of touch with the rotary community :) Damn Haters :) J/K

Thats one thing I've already discussed with NV. They are NOT going to do buffet style and do made to order. People who did that on Friday really enjoyed it and paid alot less!! I thought there will be more people doing breakfast but most opt'd not to do breakfast..
Again, I'm not against potential place.. I'm worried, I'm going to spend TON of time re organizing and such.. Ive already made a trip up there last year to scope out the area and there were VERY few place who's willing to work and match NV.. As long as I don't have to waste more time and better.. I'll do it!

Well, obviously I can't make much of an educated guess without seeing the new proposed place. Also, I've only ever been to this DGRR at NV so I can't base this experience against past ones. I'm just trying to say that for what I came to see at DGRR (rotary cars, rotary people and the dragon) I got all I was after plus some nice scenery :)
Also, my feelings follow my hopes that Phil will continue to do the event and having done a few organizational events in the past, I know it can be more of a huge animal to conquer, so I see his point on saving time and making it easy by sticking with (what seems to have) done a fantastic job already.

I agree completely , and I drove 8+ hours to attend this year ... NOT opposed to change though , if it's going to be better than NV , mostly the costs ... I had Breakfast at NV , Fruit Pancakes with a side of Biscuits and Gravy with Coffee for less than $10 ... there was a Breakfast Buffet that morning David , and they were charging a set price , maybe you didn't know about the Buffet price ?? :dunno: ... How the drive from your place David as far as fun/scenery and distance/time?
If it's where I think it is........it would be a VERY scenic drive..... fairly fun......but you would be 10 times more likely to get behind traveling tourists going 35mph ....and the ratio of passing zones to curves is slim. You would also be more likely to see law enforcement sitting on the sides of the road toward PF and Townsend taking people out 1 by 1.
I understand Phil's desire to work with the same place....... right now I'm spending my time trying to get this year's BOTD moved to NV rather than Fontana. Our vote was that NV's lodging, food, and prices were WAYYYY better!
That's right, you heard it here.....DGRR AND BOTD will both be held at NV :icon_tup:

<Rant ON:
What is all this whining and bitching about bringing the family and kids? The reason most of us are there each year, is for the love of the rotary and US129. The last thing we need is the family to tag along that is not supportive of our love for these rotaries, or nagging us because they are bored. I love my family, but if they are not interested in the event, then they need to stay at home and there will be other quality time. This is an event that celebrates the Rotary engine and US129 with the 311 curves that our cars were made to drive on, not Pigeon Forge and Dollywood.
Seriously if you were bored at any time, then you just don’t get it. I missed having an RX-7 there and driving it on the gap. However I still had plenty of fun knowing everyone was enjoying their rides across US129, and the times the guys let me drive their sevens. I wished I could have driven that JDM RX-3. WOW that would have been sweet.
I would think the majority who participate in this event each year, don’t really have unlimited funds and Phil has done a great job, making the package complete for a minimum price. Plus considering the people who drive the whole day just to get to the location and the price of gasoline, they probably aren’t looking to see how they can spend more money and probably appreciate that they don’t have to go driving around to go to a restaurant, just to wait in line and get lousy service. Plus the t-shirt is included! :)
I think each year has improved tremendously, when it was fine from the simple 1st DGRR in 2005. I’m with Phil in trying to keep with NV. They were very accommodating and I think this is the highest level of organization to be achieved without spoiling the intentions of the whole event. Lets try not to get to the stuffy level of the BMW and Corvette groups.

I know some of you might think what I'm about to say as bitching...
But here it goes...
I have thought about many different possibilities over past 4 years about this event...
When I decided to do this past event, I've thought of other locations (besides NV). I've literally drove 200-300 miles checking out other locations and deals around US129. But they all had problems.
Here are some of the problems and what I was looking for..
1. Food - Yes, I guess it would be easier for me to let all of you take care of the food.. But to me, it makes more sense for us to stay at a one place and we all eat together. It saves time for you as you don't have to leave the property. Otherwise, I also should care about organize parking.. Hence why I worked so hard trying to make a deal with NV regarding food.
2. Parking - I know we had to split into two parking area.. But you'll be surprised how hard it was for me to find parking for over 100 cars. I've looked at other surrounding lodges and most didn't have 100 single place parking.. Also, Once again, i did not want to mess around with catering food... Its a nightmare as at the end, i have to clean up. Again, one reason why NV was better choice.
Other things to do - Sure bigger city will give you more choice.. But Again, I had to look for a location better than Fontana.. NV provide some activities such as Horse back riding, white water, etc.. I know its not what all of you want to do, but its more than Fontana had offered and some of the stuff you can not do easily from Knoxville. Can't please everyone...
Bottomline, I'm open for suggestions... I am in no mean saying I'm sticking to NV.. But the new place is "NEW", which means, I have to re-plan!! That takes more time away from me and I don't want to switch for small improvements in food, activity, location, etc.. It would also take more effort from the location to try to get me to switch...

Its hard for me to think about any improvements (besides paved roads) that can be done to NV since the place was damn near perfect, everything from the accommodations to the food to the drive to the dragon, which to me was the warm up lap to the main event:driving:. The prices were incredibly cheap, the scenery fantastic and the people were great, also the fact that we had the whole place to ourselves was unbelievable.
My wife and I fell in love with NV and even before BOTD08 or DGRR09 were announced we had already decided that we would be staying at NV for any upcoming events.
By the way a poll would help settle this matter, I for one vote NV.

Ignoring Phil's time commitment, I think trying out one last place would be good. Then, we would have a comparison between the applicable places: Fontana Village (obviously out), NV (current one), and whatever the name of the one David said (potential). Then, from 2009 on out, we'll know which one we want to use for the next 60 years until Phil dies.
If David worked there and says it will be better, that's enough for me. It's not a recommendation from someone who stayed there one night and liked it. He managed the place.
Now, keeping Phil in mind, it's ultimately up to him if he has the time or not. I have no clue how much time/effort it would take to set up a new venue. However, if someone is willing to help him then that would make the decision easier.

They havent responded back to me with a price yet for some strange reason, you would think bringing in 200+ people they would call me back. Really strange cause I still deal with them about once a month or so sending them customers or answering questions for them. If they dont contact me by the end of today, it isnt worth dealing with them.
It is an insanely nice resort but apparantly new management is dropping the ball.

Oh well, looks like it will be NV again.
Well that's disappointing. Damn 2 hour drive... On the bright side, driving home at 2 in the morning means I can go as fast as I want. I drove the Dragon last year coming home without seeing a single car. Too bad I was in my Mazda 6. :( (I still had fun)

All I can say is, I'm bit vengeful:) Someone pisses me off, I'll go out of the way to make sure they learn a lesson.. hence, Fontana Village is feeling the pinch:) Now, I'm going to let other groups know about NV and persuade them away from Fontana... They just fucked with the wrong person:)

I'll be sure to book those days off with my possible new employer. Can't wait to hit the gap again. We absolutly must do another midnight run.
I was very impressed with the lodge and the cabins. To put it short I was expecting motel quality. We got 5 star resort quality. Would love to use the same location if we can all fit. Fortunatly I was one of the few with a decent ride height so I had no problems with the climb up. Can't say the same for the others that I heard smacking their bumpers off the larger bumps and pavement breaks.

Guys... I hate to say this but I'm still working on the details..
as most of you know, things are different now then last event..
gas is more expensive and hence some of these places are being difficult.... Nantahala Village was super cool to us last time but now, they are being difficult and changed their general manager and their owner Lucy is being difficult....
Now I'm talking with Fontana Village as their management has changed and they really want us to come... I'm working out few details to this.... I think in some ways, Fontana is better as gas is more likely to go back up by the time we hit DGRR 2009... I'll make my decision by End of OCT!

Wow , just looking at the Fontana website , their accommodations are WAY more expensive than Nantahala Village , for the same type of cabins :ack2: ... keep us posted
Maybe we'll have better conversations with Nantahala after BOTD this month. Face to face convo's are always more telling. We'll see if they like rotarheads or maybe they just want to lose car clubs all together.
djmtsu
09-08-2008, 06:49 AM
Actually Fontana can be cheaper, if they give the discounts they did previously.
Also it is so close to the Dragon, but the cabins aren't as nice. Not that they are bad or anything. I felt like I couldn't touch anything at the cabin this year. It was super nice, and apparently owned by an individual, and not Nathalla.
Wherever Phil!! I don't care, I'll be there.
Herblenny
09-08-2008, 08:21 AM
Problem with Nantahala is that it has its limitation... And I've yet to get a call from them (10 days now).
Also, since our event is bit more rushed (packed 2 day event), I know shorter distance to the Dragon is a plus!! Especially we don't know what the gas price will be.
One thing I could tell you is that Fontana is trying their best to accommodate us. They been fast about getting information I've asked and they have agreed to everything. Only problem is that the date I've requested there is another event going on... A knife convention.
Regarding discounts, they are willing to do the same tier discount I've done at Nantahala. Which is if you book early they will give deep 20%, 15, 10, and nothing towards the end..
I'm still debating and wanting to hear back if Nantahala is going to accept my bid for food pricing and how I want the food to be handled. If they don't call back by this wednsday (about 2 weeks), I'm going to drop Nantahala all together.... and go with Fontana and see what happens... Again the problem is Nantahala Village going back on their words.... BIG problem!! if you ask me.

CAN'T WAIT!
Yup. Can't wait. Just hope that race school is not during that weekend or rather that two weeks.
Not to far off again. Time flies!!
I just read this entire thread hoping to make plans to attend next year and now I'm a bit confused as certain posts stood out from all the rest ... first Nantahala resort was the lodge of choice for most and Fontana was to avoided at all cost, talk of a new venue near Pigeon Forge which didn't seem to pan out, and then talk of excluding family and kids this being an all rotary enthusiast event... now it seems the coins have flipped and Nantahala has given us the d*ck and we are looking to Fontana to save the day. I'm glad that bridge wasn't burned completely but with all the negativity said about their pricing/accommodations, my comfort level with them would be a little low. I just hope no one's hung out to dry because of all the uncertainty with accommodations. I have first hand experience of being hundreds of miles from home and having to make last-minute arrangements because of a mix-up. It was not a pleasant trip and having family/kids with you would probably be a nightmare. Now what gets me about this whole excluding family thing is the organizer, Phil, instructed me, being a new father, to bring my new baby on this trip as this could be a family vacation. So I don't see how anyone else can even make the suggestion of exclusion and expect to be taken serious. :icon_tdown:
I really feel there should be a committee to research and negotiate to take the burden off just one person. As Phil said, it takes up too much of his time and what is a fun event if it's all work? It might be too late to restructure DGRR09 but I suggest a new plan for DGRR10 and beyond. Maybe pass out ballots at DGRR09 to elect a committee to balance out the workload. Just my $0.02

I'm finalizing the plan.... I'll have the answer by this weekend.. Hopefully.
Pending the answer I receive, it will be VERY different and more affordable for everyone...
My main goal is to help out with everyone regarding the current economical situation and have maximum number of attendees...
So for that reason, I'm going to make it $25 registration FEE which will include a Tshirt, discount at Fontana village, Discounted meals at Fontana, entry to door prizes, Car show plaques, etc..
I think $25 is well priced and small amount we make will be used to fund our expanses to possibly bring special guests from other parts of the country or possibly other side of the world:)
I need to make sure few things before I could open the registration.. I will let you know... as soon as I get a more final words... Should be this friday....

Not sure when i'll have time to head up to Columbus... Last time I was there, i had a great time with Vila and his friends.. I'll try to come up:)
Yeah, That was one of the reasons for lowering the registration fee and making it more flexible. I'm still waiting on few things and soon as I hear about it, I'll let you guys know.. But at this point it will stay as it is.. Hope you guys will register early so I could start preparing how many shirts to print and such. Also, I'm going to do a BIG spread of DGRR on RCC Digizine:) including videos and tons of pics!

There is a new group sales guy.. He seems to be reasonable and he said he will get me an answer by end of tuesday... When that falls thru, I'll ask someone to check Pigean Forge (sp?).
The BOTD committee had a pretty good relation with Nantahala after our recent meet...hope it holds true for DGRR as well.

As VR8 was saying.....we had a good thing going with Nantahala after we sat down in person.....but ofcourse on the phone is the exact same nightmare that you're going through now. I was able to meet the new "Group" coordinator in September and he seems like he's much more organized and on top of things.... hell he even sent me a "Thank You / Come Back Again" card in the mail! Hopefully he'll respond better than the last 2 or 3 Group Coordinators did. Anyway as of right now we plan on using them again for BOTD 09. :icon_tup:

I got a message from Nanatahala and things are looking better... They were much better this time about getting back to me and keeping me informed... Which was all I needed. As of now, they are willing to give 20% off the entree and it will be reservation based.
This might work out better for all of you and easier for me as they were pain in the butt to deal with and also give those who wants to save money by bringing or cooking for yourselves.
I'm now waiting for one more thing to be ironed out and it will be official. I will keep you guys all updated.. but as of now, looks like Nantahala Village again:)

Thanks... This time around was bit more frustrating because I was let down by both places... and wasted quite a bit of time. I've also realized how un organized they were and I'm sure you guys think that about me...
Anyhow, I now can say we are 99.99%.
I recieved an email and everything looks good except couple of minor details.. But as of now I say its 99.99%... Until I make it official.
I need to write out the registration details and what will be different from last event..
Please spread the word to others...
If you haven't been following whats going on in the rotary world, I and several rotary enthusiasts have been banned because rx7club thinks I'm a spammer for spreading the word and providing FREE Rotary Enthusiasts magazine, RCC-Digizine.
For that reason, i can not reach certain population of the group. So, please spread the word...
I think i've mentioned this earlier but we are also trying to bring Dr. Iannetti to the event and maybe some rotary guys from Japan. i've spoken with guys from RX-7 Magazine Japan and they were VERY interested in covering DGRR 09.
Like last year, we will also try to provide informative seminars. We offered tuning seminar for those wanting to know more about how ECU's work and we might offer slight more advance class next year.
We are also thinking about providing engine building seminar and maybe turbo seminars.
I will let you know of price and such to attend these potential seminars later on.. They will be given by leading rotary vendors and experts.
