Simultaneous Hi & Lo Headlights

Someone was asking me how I had my headlights wired up at DRGG. I do not remember who it was (sorry). So, I'm posting it here.

For those who are looking at this mod, please understand that this is meant to work with duel light bulb headlights such as those that come with the EVO-R RX-7 Sleek Headlights.

This mod should work with any other duel filament headlights (such as stock headlights) with no ill effect but I have not tested it nor do I intend to test it; therefore, I take no responsibility for any ill effect caused by this mod. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

For anyone using EVO-R RX-7 Sleek Headlights; I’ve tested this mod, and it works with no ill effect now for over a year on my car. However; I still take no responsibility for any ill effects that may be caused by this mod. Like any modification performed on your vehicle, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Method of implementation is at your own discretion, I’m only providing the wiring diagram. If you have any questions I'll be more then happy to assist.

Very cool. I think this should apply to my RE-A headlights. I'll look at the wiring diagrams and confirm it later.

Do you have a simple diagram to read, looking at that makes me so confused...lol...I hate electrical stuff thus my ignorance in reading that diagram.

i did a pretty neat modification when i did my sleek headlights. as we all know there is a button you push for the stock lights that allow you to pop the headlights up without turning the lights on. well i found which wire it was at the front of the car using a voltimeter, tapped into it and ran it to my low beams, now i can turn my lowbeams on without turning on any other lights.

There isnt alot of things useful for this, the only one that comes to mind is if your running from the police at night, you can turn your headlights on and they cant see the tailights.

other then that it gives the button somthing to do. I suppose you could run some neons off it or any other 12v accessories while having a nice factory switch for them.

All I did was I added a semiconductor rectifier; otherwise knowns as a diode, between the R/Y and R/W wires just after the the X-04 Combination Switch.

You can think diodes as an electronic version of a check valve. Now, make sure that you hook up the diode currectly, that is you want current to flow from Hi (R/W) to your low side (R/Y).

That's not a bad idea! Not that I condon you or anyone running from the police... :driving:
What I plan to do is hookup my fan mod to that switch; allowing me to turn on my fans at any time to help with cooling.

I don't mean to steal your thunder, but there's another way to do this that doesn't require a diode. I posted a writeup on rx7club a couple of years ago. My car has been running like this since 2005.

Here's the factory diagram, I've chopped it up and moved things around to provide a better picture of how the system works:

FIRST THING FIRST: DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL BEFORE DOING ELECTRICAL WORK. This includes cutting wires, or disconnecting connectors (which is usually safe, but you can never be too careful). It's worth the extra time to avoid damaging your car or yourself.


Remove the plastic cover from the steering column (3 screws), and the next plastic cover (4 more screws, don't forget the one near the A/C duct on the side of the dash).

We'll be working with the big blue connector under the steering column. There is a clip on top of the blue connector (closest to the steering column). It's not very easy to see. Pinch this clip and pull the connector straight back (towards the rear of the car) gently.

Here is the connector we're interested in. We want to connect the [white/green] wire to the [red/yellow] wire. Notice that these wires change colors on the other side of the connector. Connecting the [white/black] and [red/black] wires will give the exact same results.

Here's how I connected them. Without cutting the wires, I carefully cut the insulation with a razor, and removed it. Then I wrapped a spare piece of single-strand wire around the two bare wires to hold them in place before soldering (twisting the spare wire with pliers will get it good and tight). Warning: these wires carry a full 12-14V and up to 30 amps of current straight from the battery to the headlight. Be sure you form a good connection or your lights will be dim.


If this is your first time soldering, practice on some junk wire before you try this on your car. Place some cardboard on the area below where you're soldering, to avoid burning the carpet with any drips.
