View Full Version : Getting Prepared...

Besides the long list of things to do to prepare my car for the trip, I have concerns and questions about how to go about this.

So I'm one of those people that always like to be prepared ahead of time. So I'm planning to go to DGRR this year no matter what. Even if, worst case scenario, my Rx2 doesn't make it, I am. So I'm going to make a little camping trip out of it as well.

For those that have been, how exactly does this work? Are there campgrounds nearby that I can rent ahead of time and camp out at?

Can I keep my Rx2 at the Deals Gap location? Or will I be driving it back and forth to the campgrounds?

What else is going on in the area besides the meet at Deals Gap that I always see pictures of? I'm bringing my wife, daughter, and possibly 2 other people to make a full trip/weekend get a way out of this. Also, the car that they'll be riding in will act as my lifeline if my Rx2 decides not to make it. ;)

There are tons of things to do in the area. Hiking, horseback riding, zip-lines, rafting (water will be COLD), breweries, etc.

As far as camping goes, I know a bunch of people do it, I'm sure someone will chime in.

And I wouldn't see a problem leaving the RX-2 at the Village at night, just don't park it right in front of the lodge, since there might be something going on early in the day, and it could potentially be in the way. You could always park it by our cabin, right behind the lodge.

Cherokee Casino is about 30~45 min away. I think Clingmans Dome is about an hour from the resort near Cherokee.

I'm hoping to be no more than 10 minutes away.

Is there camp sites this close by?

Turkey Creek is probably the closest place to the lodge. I'll add them to the webpage this year.

Around the area you have tons of things to do. You are the bottom side of the Smokies. Alcoa/Maryville/Townsend are all close on the Tennessee side of 129. If you go Townsend you can go to Cades Cove and do the loop. Still my favourite spot next to Big John. If you go through the Smokies, Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg is all the tourist trap stuff. Dollywood etc. So depending on what you want to do, it is all close by.

So the closest camp ground is 47 minutes away? (31 miles)

There is nothing closer? I only find motorcycle lodges close to deals gap so far.

The campsite listed is near the venue, not the Drahon!

Yeah the lodge is a good 30 minutes from the dragon (or longer) but its a great drive
depending on the route you take. You want to be close to the lodge, not the dragon.

Besides its all about the driving anyway, so stop whining :)

Its not unusual to fill the car up 2 times each day for me.
