So, the other day, after trying since April to buy this thing, I finally got it home.
1976 Mazda Cosmo (#2)

Here's the story.
Car was bought new here in Murfreesboro back in 1976. 13B, 5 spd. Fully loaded, with power windows, mirrors, A/C and PS. Sometime around 1980, it was converted to a 12A and auto trans. Did the 13B blow? Did an injury prevent driving a manual trans? Who knows. Thankfully, the manual trans pedal assembly and everything is in the trunk. Notice the sweet ass luggage rack on the trunk? Awesome. It also has some sweet headlight 'lids' that are retro as fuck. The owner kept it garaged its whole life, and drove it until his death a few years ago (allegedly). It was bought at an estate auction, but was left behind and never claimed, or paid for. I found it hiding in a gravel parking lot in rural Rutherford County, and found someone who knew someone who could get info on it. After much patience, it is now mine. It also has an old school, unassembled rotary engine model!!!
Still has the AM/FM radio with an Audiovox 25 Amp booster. All the glass is good, as well as the interior!!! Only thing I can find missing so far is the dome light lens :(
I hooked it up to power today, to test the electrical systems. As soon as I hit the key, the fuel pump started whirring and everything came to life!
-mirrors- check
-windows go down- check
-windows go up- check
-headlights, markers and tail lights- check
-brake lights and high beams- check
-stereo- check check check
Since I was sitting in it, and it had power, I decided to hit the key. I know it wouldn't start, there are no plug wires on it, or spark plugs. But it spun fast and I heard many whooshes.
Next step is going to be more cleaning, and see if the 12A runs. Once that is determined, its coming out.
What will go back it? Don't know yet.....

Come on now! I brought the RX-8 for 2013, and the FC for 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 (had to go check the archives), it blew up on the way in 2009. Damn, have I been to that many DGRR's rotary less?
This time it will be different. Both of the Cosmo's should be ready this coming year. It will be a matter of which one when it gets closer to the actual date.

Considering swapping the engine and trans from the silver 76 into this one.
Then the silver one can get more power down the road, since its far from stock now.
Thoughts?
t_g_farrell
09-29-2014, 11:04 AM
After seeing all the crap you had to do to the other one I was going to suggest that. This
one is so solid and clean and needs the original power plant in it.

10-28-2014, 11:03 AM
So, here is what is going on with the Cosmos.
The White car is going to get the engine and trans from the Silver car.
The Silver car is getting an S4 engine, retaining the FI, with hopefully an SA/FB trans (for easier mounting).
My FC is being unceremoniously being evicted from its hiding place at the beginning of the year, so I'm pulling the drivetrain, and parting it out, or selling the shell. I am keeping the wheels on it though, since they are GSL-SE pattern, and I am switching to GSL-SE spindles/rear end on the Silver car.
TitaniumTT
10-28-2014, 04:46 PM
kewl kewl..... other one NEEDS MOAR POWA! I know a guy up north that can help with that :suspect:
Also, I have the trans that you desire should you need 1
djmtsu
10-28-2014, 05:05 PM
Thanks Bri. Charles has some kicking around. A stock S4 NA engine, fuel injected will work well in the silver car. And this one needs the 13B 4 port with the carb. As it should be.
Now I'm just hoping that time, and funds hold up. I'd like to have both there, but that might not be possible. If I bring one, it'll be this one.
TitaniumTT
10-28-2014, 05:08 PM
Cheers man!
S4 n/a power it does not equal..... needs large turbo.... like suck small farm animals in big.
djmtsu
10-28-2014, 05:18 PM
Maybe down the road. I'd love to do the 13B-RE with a single turbo, or BNR twins. But that is some serious $$$.
I'm still in recovery mode from being unemployed for so long. Makes me gun shy buying parts!!

Well, there seems to be an issue. I still haven't received the title from the auction company I bought it from. And, due to the 11 digit VIN, it is proving difficult to get anywhere on a title search.
If I don't have the title by the end of the month, this one is (unfortunately) going to be stripped down to the shell, and used for parts for the other car. I really don't want to do that, but I might have to. If would like to still keep it, and put parts from the silver car back on it to keep it a complete 'parts car', but that requires a place to store it.
Grrrrrrr
djmtsu
01-05-2016, 04:00 PM
Santa was good to me.
Got the title and car registered!! Woo hoo!! (they got tags for it too, but not Antique Tags, so that will change)
Now I can actually do something with this car, and not just cut it up or part it out!!!

Luckily, it wasn't too hard to get a title transferred from a dead guy. Morbid. But since the middle man was being a fucking slack ass, we had to improvise.

Update. Car was running using a borrowed engine, but it a bad coolant seal. We also discovered the MC was leaking into the booster.
I have procured an SA booster and MC. Will swap at least the MC for now, and clean out the booster.
Also, the engine from the Silver Cosmo (brand spanking new rebuild), along with the 5spd trans is going into this Cosmo. Then I can drive it more and shake things down, and work on some cosmetics before DGRR 2017.

Took apart the 12A that was in this Cosmo when I bought it. As stated before, this car was a 13B 5speed, that was converted to a 12A and automatic sometime in the past. Well, take a look at these pics. And remember when I bought it, the car had not been on the road for at least 2 years, and the engine bay was partially assembled.

This fucker just refuses to be resurrected.
Jeff, Paul, Charles and I dropped in the 13B 4port that was rebuilt for the silver Cosmo, and the 5 speed box. Everything went smooth, only real hiccup was the carb needed a little extra love. She fired right up.
Then, about 10 minutes in, she started pushing coolant into the overflow. Used a cooling pressure tester and pumped it up to see what's what.
17 psi held bled down to about 16 psi over an hour.
Removed Leading plugs. Pumped it up to 20 psi. Bled down to about 16 psi in 20 minutes.
Dammit.
I did swap in a good brake master cylinder though, so when it does run, it should also stop.
Sigh.

Did you turn the engine over to see if it didn't just leak air out somewhere?

Yeah. I had Myles on chat to help me run through some tests. I think we're going to haul it to Charles house to do more diag, then last resort, pull the motor and see what's what.

I still say keep the engine, and gimme the car ;)

Guess I should update, in case anyone is reading.
Seized T-stat turned out to be the culprit as far as cooling is concerned. FIXED
When bleeding the brakes, I noticed the right rear caliper was not 'bleeding' as well as the others. That is also the ONLY caliper I did not replace the hose on. So, I'll do that today. (also, that same caliper bracket was finger tight. sue me)
Still have been unable to find an e-fan that fits the shallow space between the rad and pulley, so I am putting a clutched fan back on. The original is seized, but Charles has many to choose from. Going over there later to pick one out.
I have the adapter for the back of the WP housing for my temp gauge, and the oil pressure gauge is already plumbed. I am removing the wicked 70's awesome Audiovox 25 amp SOUND BLASTER from the dash pocket and putting my gauges there.
Also, Charles and Jeff worked some magic on the exhaust and have it hanging PERFECT. New hangers helped immensely.
It needs an alignment pretty bad. And there is a knock over bumps and stuff. We'll check out the ball joints (I have spares) and the sway bar links (Also have spares) when I swap wheels. I decided I am not a fan of the Diamond Racing steelies, since they are so damn heavy and not hub centric. Adler removed the awesome Sears Roadhandler tires circa 1985, and I'll be getting something in a 205-60-14 to replace them. Charles is buying the Kuhmos from me, and now I'm stuck with a set of rims that don't fit anything else. Hooray.
I also swapped hoods and trunklid from the Silver car, as they are in far better shape until we can repair rust on the underside of the white pieces.
Pic for the lames.

Oil leak on driveway gives a rotary owner away.
djmtsu
11-12-2016, 01:37 PM
Kinda. That was mostly coolant after the t-stat replacement. Although there was a slight leak from the drain plug (not my fault) as well. Doesn't leak anything, anymore.
For now.

Stop being lazy. This is a resurrection of a long dead Mazda found in the boonies. It has been frustrating and rewarding to get ONE of these Cosmos running and driving finally. It would have been done WAY sooner if baby #2 hadn't destroyed my free time and bank account.

Do your wheels not have tapered lug nut seats? Are you using the incorrect lug nuts? Whats wrong with lug centric?

Jeff was concerned, even though the wheels are lug centric. And Jefe is the expert.

Anyway, I got a fan from Charles / Johnny. Looks like it should be a winner, and slim enough to be used as a pusher.

Anytime brother. These are the rarest of the rare for vintage Mazda rotary. Hell it's probably easier to find a Cosmo 110s than these ugly ducklings.
That being said, I do know where there are a couple in GA......

You don't have to get a full restoration project, it would be cheaper if you didn't do that.
Just a thought. . I'd like to see more out there

Update- because I'm bad at this.
Gauges installed for water temp, oil pressure
E-fan installed
Rear trunk seal 'lip' that was rusted cut out and new metal welded in
Stock steel wheels refinished
Some thing I still need to, or would like to do prior to DGRR.
- Charles is going to rebuild the carb again with his fancy new ultrasonic cleaner. Rode in his truck with the same carb cleaned this way, and holy fuck it pulls. My secondaries aren't working.
- Need a dual alternator pullet/belt
- Debating getting a rebuilt PS pump. They are cheap, and it would be nice to have since running the power box manual is a pain.
- clean up some more shit, find a way to get some tunes in her.

Oh, and cut out this catalytic converter and weld in a straight pipe. Already has 2 mufflers on it, and that's enough. lol

Another minor update:
Re-purposed an FC hatch seal for a trunk seal. Works perfect.
Swapped in one of Charles Hitachi carbs he rebuilt. Holy shit what a difference! He is rebuilding my carb now, will swap it back this weekend.
JK found the upper section of my fan shroud, and I found the lower. Re-installed with the stock clutched fan. Temps never go over 180. Stupid piddly e-fan.
Also, forgot that my fuel tank sending unit seal isn't sealing too well. Found one for an FB that looks identical. Ordered from Mazda. Hope it gets here before the weekend.
This weekend we're cutting off the cat, installing the Tokico's in the rear and adjusting the front suspension. Then its just a matter of attempting to make it prettier.

Probably. Still have to do some 'pretty' work. Jeff said he'd help with that, and he's pretty damn good at polishing turds.
