I am the proud new owner of a 2013 Mustang 5.0. Oh this is the wrong place for that :P. But on a serious note I did purchase the 5.0 and when I started trying to figure out what mods that I could do. The only ones I was able to do were the Cat back exhaust if I wish to keep the warranty. I had saved up money for a supercharger only to find out that I couldn't get it.

I have a buddy in the middle of rebuilding his RX-7 FC he has all of the body work done, and needs to finish his interior and get an entire power train. He convinced me to spend my money on a project car. I first looked into getting an older mustang and it was $5k for a rolling chassis. This didnt work for me. He told me to look into the 240, WRX, FD, and FC. I Liked the looks of the FC and FD. I did a little home work and found that I would be able to do more with the FC instead FD.

So I shopped around and found a 2owner 1 family FC. It is the 86 GXL 2+2 converted from automatic to standard. It runs smoothly but the body need a little work, and the interior is kind of shot.

The car came with extras.
-Complete 13b (60k miles)
Partiale 13b( just missing things that you would probably delete anyway. and he believes that he blew out an apex seal on this one. )
-Automatic Transmission( this is the one that he took out to put in the 5 speed, he said it ran rough and that he doubted it still worked)
-2 sets of pop up head light mounts that still work
-pair of blue seats
-complete sunroof system in good shape
- both doors, with working resonators( power windows)
-2 drivers side fenders
-hood
and a bunch of random powertrain and interior parts , I'll post a full list once I get it figured out

My game plan is to completely fix the exterior and paint it a matte pearl blue. Redo the interior from scratch, using foam as a frame and fiberglass/carbon fiber the interior. I am planning on turning the good spare engine into a 20b using a rotor from the damaged 13b if it still has a good housing and rotor. I also plan to stay NA.

Nice to meet you all

Welcome to the forum Robert. One thing to consider.... Building a 20B isn´t as simple as just taking a non-fucked rotor/housing and adding it to a working engine. Lots more involved, if it was that simple we´d ALL have 20b´s running our cars!! lol

What branch are you in, how long ya been serving for? (Navy here, been doing it for 11 years and counting)

Cheers,

Levi

Welcome Robert. It sounds like a fun project. If it was me, I'd get it running good on what you have and get the interior and paint done before planning anything else. One thing at a time. You can't get too in-depth with it as you never know when orders/deployments are coming and you have to put it in storage for the duration. (I have had to give away enough project vehicles for this lesson to finally stick)

As far as the 20B idea, there is a lot more to it than I think you realize. There is a reason that people in the know say that a 20B is a $15-20k conversion.

Yeah I had read 10-15 k , and it is a long term goal . The most imidiste thing is a tune up . I just got spark plugs, oil, oil filter last night and plan in doing that this weekend . They didn't carry plug wires. I'm taking my time with everything . I just laid out some of my goals. I don't plan on starting the engine until almost the end .

I am in the Army , 6 years in E-6. My MOS is 89D or EOD for the folks who don't know all the numbers . I'm from Ohio, currently stationed at Fort Campbell. I'm married and have an 18 month old son. My FC and I were both born in 86

I about burned my car to the ground today. I guess they have an issue with flooding? hadnt really happened that bad, Had only happened once before and it was a small little fixby pulling out a fuze and starting it a second and then it started like a champ.

Now when your alone and dont have anyone around you that knows about rotary and you try to fix it yourself , and you do it wrong and flood it worse it gets frustrating :D,,

Any way my rotary buddy was close by and came and told me I was an idiot and he had showed me where the fuze was. I couldnt recall any of this. Talking today with he I think I am in the mood for a 13b re now . or something like that. Since the JDM engines are a little /lot cheaper than building my own 20b from ground up

Whether a used JDM engine or used USDM engine, a rebuild will be in order. Both will present their own unique pro's and cons. But buying a core is just that. It will have to be rebuilt and if the housings are still within spec you will be lucky.

With these cars and turbo's nothing is easy and cheap. Work out what you are willing spend and then plan your build accordingly. Do lots of research and ask a lot of questions.

I will be doing it slowly, and if i dont have my mind made up then I wont rush. Everything I do will be thought out and planned out. As far as budget im not putting a price tag on it, i will just be working as fast as I can aford to. If I cant afford a project on the car then Ill just keep it parked and save up. I am planning on doing everything right, no short cuts. Since I have next to no idea what im doing in the engine bay then I will probably leave that until later. so I can do home work on it.

Sounds like you have a good start. Mine just started pissing oil, i'm about to send it to the crusher. Good luck on another note an a word to the wise keep that engine cool an avoid a/c. Thats how the last owner killed this car i have.
