So what exactly did you do Pink Flea?

I've heard the stories on the other two (biker and gravel, correct?), just not your incident.

This happened last September with my RX8 "Flea" at BOTD:
Day 1: "broken belt" in my left rear tire running the hell bender. So early thursday morning Flea was towed out on a flat bed into Knoxville for a new set of rear tires.
Day 2: Spent in Knoxville getting the tires.. got to run the dragon that evening coming back to the village. The only killboy shot of Flea on the dragon was from this day... On the back of the flatbed!.. But hey.. Flea is so badass she made that tow truck her bitch and hitched a ride!
Day3: White water rafting!!! We had a great time... and then we met the waterfall.... And my face met a paddle.. My friend Nic totally bitch slapped me with his paddle as he was flying out of the raft! So fat lip big deal. We got back to the village and I kinda sorta tried to back down a steep driveway, 2 wheels off the ground later I was stuck off the side of this mountain of a driveway.. Luckly it was where EVERYONE was hanging out so there where plenty of people to lean on my car and back it down so it didnt flip over.
Day4: The show and shine!! Flea had her new shoes and looked so pretty... Almost as much as me.. yep, "you shure are a purrdy yougin" thats what the locksmith told me 3 hours later as he was getting my keys out of my car.. as I was missing the car show ...(I also managed to lock myself out of my cabin the same day) I made it back to the headquarters in time to catch the awards and raffles where I won "star of the event"... No introduction necessary, I was already infamous. Now it was time for the caravan to the dragon to make some great runs!! There was a little knock in the front of the car.. Alignment I planned on getting fixed when I returned home. We where right there!! Right at the last turn before the dragon! The last BLIND curve that is, with about 40 RX8's in a line. I turned the curves and there was a stopped line of 8's I slammed on brakes and I made it!!!! I didnt hit Dawn's 8!! But then BAM, Darby hit me and then John hit him! Darby hit me so hard my license plate embedded RX8CLUB.COM backwards into his front bumper, the license plate then only said RX8CU B.com and has since dwindled down to RX8 COM. All the guys up ahead where on the 2 ways saying WRECK WRECK!!! WAS IT JANNA??!! At least this time it was not my fault but now the knocking was REAL bad! We all limped back to the cabins and I asked one of the guys to check the knocking to see if I would be able to make it home. The Wreck actually saved my life, my lug nuts had come loose and if I had run the dragon I would have lost a wheel and gone off the side of the mountain! So I did have good luck after all!!

Three accidents is hardly a lot. I say it was pretty good odds for the amount of cars and people that attended. And yes, you are right about Pink Flea...you figure she would stay away from the mountains from now on since, she has had back to back bad luck trips there!

I did get behind her once on and did not want to push her as it was after her wreck so I backed off a few times. She really was not driving bad.

I would say we need to inspect the cars before they go down the dragon.
maybe phil can find a few inspectors next year. I really think the people that have stock suspension cars dont need to push it.

Its a public road though, so as long as the car has a tag, they can do what they please.

Also, that is what everyone signed the waiver. You are responsible for your car and your actions.

I think everyone shouldn't push it. It's not a track. Regardless of my opinion though, people will. That said, I totally agree about the suspension. I, currently, have the stock (minus Tokico HPs) suspension on my car and I realize that. People also need to think about their brakes, which are arguably more important (doesn't matter what suspension you have if you can't slow down). I wonder how many of the people there had bled their brakes within the past year...

When my car was moving, and I drove the Dragon, I braked very early (enough time to be safe if my brakes failed) and went around the turns quickly, but nowhere near the limit of my car. And guess what? I still had a blast.

True, but an inspector(s) could still give recommendations. A lot of people may not know what to look for on their car as far as safety.

FirstRotaryExp
04-14-2008, 04:33 PM
People who havent run the road shouldnt push it. I still have very stock suspension and I know when to let off the gas. You can have a fully race prepped car and still not know how to drive. The same can be said of the motorcycles.

As a local Ive seen cars that should have no problem keeping in there lane at the speeds ive gone on that road, and yet they cross the lines so the driver can have an easier time. This goes for the bikes and the 8's I had on my ass saturday night from the state line back to the lake. Learn to drive and judge distances and everyone should have a relatively safe ride.

The inspection would be a quick look over your car by someone else. Just a different set of eyes on it. If they were in place this time the loose lug nuts would have been caught on the cars that found out later they had loose nuts. Small things like that.
Your right It is a public road but again but by having someone else look over a car they might catch something and a save a life.

You and I both know half the people their did not look over the car before they drove there much less went on the dragon. Alot of the cars there had 100k on them if not more and anything is possible.

I could care less what anyone thinks truly! It is just a thought that could save you from getting hit as well. If anything look your friends car over for them and you. Might save your ass in the end.

More so yet TIRES!! Not trying to draw attention to it, but you saw the blow up pic, the tire was obviously worn out, it's an early year meet, and most people haven't had the time to go over their cars and get all the stuff done that needs to be done, like a full tune up, bleeding brakes, new tires if need be, money and time don't always allow.

We all want to experience it so in certain situations we will let things slide. Suspension, brakes, and tires should not be something we ignore, I had a blow out because I rode on old tires, and I will never do it again, good tires are invaluable.

Just my opinion

what waiver?

The piece of paper you printed your name on and signed when checking in at registration.

And I think people should be responsible enough to go over their own cars before attempting to tame the Dragon.

Brakes: 75% left on pads, fluid clean, no cracks in hoses or leaks.
Tires: New (less than 100 miles prior to DGRR)
Tune Up: New plugs the day before, oil change, wires replaced last fall
Suspension: Bone stock, alignment perfect, no broken sway links or rotted bushings.

All that took was 10 minutes while the car was in the air for changing the oil.

While I agree I disagree, it's called cover your ass, that person in front of you or behind you could mess your shit up, it's called due diligence, cover their ass to cover your own. If I see something wrong, I will let them know, how you would you feel if you noticed a missing lug nut, and then end up like this guy?

http://media.beaned.com/allVideo/afimage2377.JPG

Or if you see a tire that needs air and it the tire blows causing the car to spin, and takes out some one enjoying the scenery, how would you feel? Yes they should be responsible for their own car, but I think as a fellow enthusiast, friend and fellow motorist you HAVE to say something, what do you have to lose?

Absolutely! Put the wheels on Monday night, drove it to work Tuesday, and re-torqued the wheels on Wednesday night.

I do plan on updating the suspension before DGRR 2K9. Stock wasn't cutting it. Not when I was busting my ass trying to keep up with fikren's RX-8 and the whole time a new Civic SI was on my ass.

I think that my luck will change for BOTD and if it dosent then I promise I will stay away... :O)

I did get behind her once on and did not want to push her as it was after her wreck so I backed off a few times. She really was not driving bad.

Thank you!!! Im not a bad driver at all.. I was only going around 35 - 40 MPH when I had my accident, which was the 1st accident I have ever had in my life. The rest of the stuff was not my fault, just heppened to be in the wrong place a tthe wrong time.

in all seriousness, it's good that nobody was hurt badly and that everyone can laugh about the whole situation.

I don't have any pics but I completely trashed my rear tires between the gap, the skyway, and the 1500km each way of driving.

they were fine when I left, probably 5 or 6/32 of tread!

GTR + 225's = they die quick.

If you just happen to be missing a lug nut or sometime during your trip your tire pressure changes due to WHATEVER is totally different than leaving home to drive 600 miles to DGRR without checking your tire pressure, the condition of your tires, checking your brakes, etc. AND if you're dying to go to DGRR despite the fact that your car needs servicing, the least you can do is park it to keep from endangering others. It's not fair to put anyone in danger or even damage anyone's car when an accident is due to negligence. And as far as inspections go... it's up to the individual owner to make sure their car is in decent condition. A person who's minimally responsible would stay off the Dragon if there's anything visibly wrong with their car.... and if they weren't sure, they'd ask someone who can check it out for them. I do think if anyone sees a potential hazzard, you should say something. Hopefully anyone who poses a potential hazzard to others will be considerate.

I agree with this, people need to tune up there cars before the journey. 100 miles on the tires though? I live in mid illinois. its well over 100 miles to dgrr. ha

Lol, I was referring to my FC! At the time, the tires had 100 miles on them prior to DGRR last year.

But I see your point, I used to live in IL.

Im confused and scared after reading this thread. First I hear about how scary the dragon is and how its difficult to tame.... I just drove it the other day in my Nissan Truck... (same as all the other roads around here) Then I hear about some waiver? so I will be driving next to people that think that roads scary and if they hit me I cant expect to claim it on anyone's insurance? Idk maybe I heard wrong, But I might have to drive my truck again sounds like I will be able to keep up with everyone anyway....
