Q: Congratulations for being our Ride of the Month! Tell us about how you acquired your rotary?
A: Bought it as a rolling shell with no motor, trans, or exhaust out of the clutches of someone with no business modifying a car ;)
Q: How did you first become interested in rotary cars? Have you had any previously?
A: Dumb luck. First car I purchased was a GTUs off of a ad in the paper. Paid too much for it, and went through all of the typical noob phases of owning a 7 (thinking the N/A was fast, planning to turbo it someday, making wishlists of parts).
Rotaries I’ve owned:
’89 Red/faded pink GTUs (which I did eventually 6p turbo)
’87 Red Sport (stock)
’79 Silver SA (stock)
’90 Black Turbo convertible
Q: Whats the biggest reason you chose a rotary powered car to modify?
A: I chose a rotary (FC in this case) because it responds well to turbocharging, is a lighter weight strong(ish) RWD platform, and if you know what you are doing can be done relatively cheaply.
Q: Is this car your daily driver? Do you participate in any form of racing? (Drag, Auto-X, etc)
A: It is NOT my daily driver, and I am thankful for that. It’s a great car, but being a convertible with stiffer suspension and low gas mileage/hard to drive slow + premium gas, I’m happy with it sitting in the garage a good bit of the time. I have and will continue to autox it this spring, and if I didn’t need a cage I’d road race it. It’s not really the best platform for that anyway. I’ve drag raced it once at Beech Bend in a lesser form than it is now, and my first time ever. Again, it’s not the best platform for that either.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your car?
A: That it’s a turbo convertible. Plenty quick, Feels great during those months it’s not too hot or cold, and car hear many more engine and exhaust noises to make the drive better. Full RB exhaust keeps it quiet with a great sound.
Q: Do you have any future plans for the car, or any car?
A: Currently it is running a stock turbo and put down 240whp/250tq at 14psi/5000rpm (dyno dynamics) but bleeds down to 8psi by redline. I’d love to put either a BNR or a proper size t4 and run about 300whp. That plus a convertible would be terrific.
Q: Any other hobbies besides cars?
A: Currently building a new computer, and I have a great little fish tank full of Cichlids.
Q: Anyone you'd like to thank?
A: Charles Gilbert (jfaplanet) for letting me use his house/driveway and resources, and David Garfinkle (garfinklemotorworks?) for allowing me the same but many years ago. Probably wouldn’t have a rotary vehicle anymore without their help.
And anything else you would like to add.
I’ll see everyone at DGRR!
