View Full Version : Just picked up a 2004 RX-8 :)
My brother-n-law is heading out to Kuwait for a year or so and I just purchased his RX-8. This is the third rotary I have owned. I belive it is a GT version. It redlines at 9K with moonroof, spoiler, fog lights, 98K miles, new transmission, spec clutch. Not sure what I am going to do with it yet but it drives great! :)

Nice, my favorite color! Has it had the engine swapped out yet under warranty?
I guess you have a decision to make for DGRR now :)

REW swap ???
If I was keeping mine past the new RX7 release, I would be doing this. Especially since there's a mounting bracket to bolt it right in....

Kewl man!!!! Sooooooooo hot runs @ night this year in the 8? I'm bringing mine down without a doubt ::biggthumpup:

Mounting it isn't the problem at all.... it's dealing with all the electronic trickery associated with it. I would LOVE to turbo mine, or swap something else in there, but it's just toooooo much of a PITA, plus.... it's my daily so no thanks.... after I get like an M3 or something along those lines for a daily, then I'll REALLy start to play with the 8, until then..... alllllll bolt on's and remain emissions legal

Yea, I know what you mean. I'm happy I have gotten over 30k miles on my bridge.
From what I've read about the REW swap, it shouldn't be too bad at all. A guy in Greece did an RE swap and said that he only had to modify like 2~3 things to get all the factory dials etc working. With an access port you can be "emissions legal" and disable all the engine codes, or do you have actual sniff tests? We just have OBD2 plug in to scan for engine codes.
Here's the guys thread, but it seems like he posted the list of things to modify in a different thread...

Because he knows you need a rotary car to be @ DGRR :smilielol5:

Mounting it and doing all the mechanical things shouldn't be very hard at all.... it would be tricking all the factory ECU shit to work properly that I think would be a royal PITA.... We've done one here, which now resides in FL I believe and I heard some horror stories from that project.... however, now that it's been done and learned, it shouldn't be that bad. We've actually got one here that's getting an REW swap that we've started on.... and by started on I mean we stripped it down and then pushed it outside for a few months while we wait on parts and money
I'll let you know how that goes.
We don't have a sniff test for OBDII... just plug in and scan....

That's cool. OBD2 plug in is always nice.
I finially found it...
Well I'm using a standalone Haltech E8. The wiring stays the same, leave the stock harness where it is(I removed unnecessary plugs such as injectors, ignition, and some electronic valves). I used the stock tps signal (RX8) and attached it to the Haltech. You can use any front cover you want, but you need to mount the stock trigger wheel and it's sensor (RX8) to have the power steering work and the stock tachometer.
I'd imagine with the stock 8 computer, tps, trigger wheel and trigger sensor, and conversion subframe, the rest of the swap would be pretty straight forward in relation to a standalone ECU swap. Then use something like the access port or mazdaedit to blank out the engine codes. I don't think the factory twins fit though.
Would love to do that to the 8, but I have to put that car to bed... The FC has sat long enough.
The RX-8 is lot of fun as a daily but usually drive 100 - 250 miles per day which as a daily driver could add $300 to $600 per month just in additional fuel cost, plus a rebuid in xxx?? miles :( It's not really cost effective for me to drive daily.
If I still have it in April I'll drive it to DGRR but it might sell it before then as I really don't need another weekend car. I purchased it from the brother n law as the car would have sat for a year+ outside when he's overseas and they gave me a price I could not turn down, plus it's a rotary! :)

Let the wife have it for her daily. She needs a rotary too.

I was thinking the same thing except she has no desire to drive a manual transmission. I'll try to get her some stick time and maybe I can convince her!:driving:

And no, the stock twins will not fit in the chassis without considerable material removal, Scott did some mock ups when he was planning out the mount brace.

Great minds think alike!?
I read a 13bT swap on 8 club, and he showed that the 13bT fits with the stock turbo, so that may be an even easier swap.
