I've been building this car for a couple years now, and have various blogs floating around the net. THIS ONE (http://87rx7.blogspot.com/) is the most thorough, although it lacks feedback from the readers.
THIS BLOG (http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=588968&page=1&pp=15) has tons of feedback from members of "The Other" forum.
On this board, I'll highlight the best parts of the build up to this point, and continue reporting progress on the project.
It has been a very strenuous project at times, but has gone very well over-all. I purchased this car with a "5000 mile rebuild", but blew the motor rather quickly. The motor had SO many issues before it blew, I often think I should've passed on this car and waited for another. BUT the progress that's been made on this one re-assures me that no matter what car I bought, MANY of the details I've gone through would not have been addressed in a well cared for car. And I am glad I've addressed them!
I bought the car in Feb 2006, and it looked pretty clean. The body was real straight, minus a crack in the front bumper and a crack in the spoiler.
http://bp3.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/ReG_ZSAzJsI/AAAAAAAAAEg/8jxPBWTNws0/s400/rx01_2.jpg
The motor had lots of "wierd" things done to it. FCD, de-powered steering rack with the lines looped together, electrical tape on the TID, no emissions, wide open 3" exhaust... But it had some nice struts/shocks and good plug wires. Over all, it looks like the previous owner was going for cheap "power".
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx01.jpg
Interior was alright, some normal cracking and no radio or AC.
http://bp1.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/ReHBIyAzJuI/AAAAAAAAAEw/DLc4NmVd_YA/s400/rx01_3.jpg
It had some hot start issues from the start. I cleaned the injectors and adjusted the TPS. No dice.
http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/4940/4050/400/968708/rx2_2.jpg
Motor blew after a couple 110 mph runs. We found LOTS of shoty work.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx02.jpg
Ported primary plate... wierd
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx05.jpg
Blown seal
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx04.jpg
This spark plug hole was cracked.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx03.jpg
The old turbo, S4, not great but not terrible.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx07.jpg
Once the rebuild started, I went for a nice smooth secondary port. It's a little larger, but overall, just a good smooth port.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx10.jpg
I did spring for the new housings. I am building for power and reliability after all.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx09.jpg
And I got a S5 turbo, ported the wastegate and the back plate was milled.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx12.jpg
Then the coatings begin!

Along the way, I picked up another T2. It had no motor, so I got a good deal on it.
http://bp3.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/R-QzPSzIUeI/AAAAAAAAAYg/3kd3qfLemYU/s400/IMG_0024.JPG
I found a motor, put two and two together and sold her. I made some decent cash, but man she was a nice looking lady!
http://bp3.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/R-QzNSzIUaI/AAAAAAAAAYA/mu0fvz7n4M4/s400/eng05.jpg
Back to the black beast... I had the internals balanced.
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4940/4050/400/rx17.jpg
Started upgrading the fuel system with a Walbro HP pump, and some 750cc injectors.
http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/4940/4050/320/108051/rx19.jpg
Picked up the popular, BBS gold meshies. They were much wider than the Mazda rims that came on the car.
http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/4940/4050/400/890219/rx30.jpg
Got FD stationary gears; I've planned to do oil mods to this motor from the get-go, so this was a natural choice.
http://bp1.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/RcDwqM0b-II/AAAAAAAAAAs/hd2420K33Lk/s400/rx40.jpg
The motor went together with studs.
http://bp3.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/RcKpLM0b-OI/AAAAAAAAABw/ZPt6NH3vvHw/s400/rx47.jpg
And in she went.
http://bp1.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/ReSRKCAzJxI/AAAAAAAAAFY/4gti1pEGk9k/s400/rx65.jpg
Got the MoTeC M2R
http://bp2.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/Rb-N3s0b-GI/AAAAAAAAAAU/71kI0Tpv4LU/s400/rx39.jpg
Wired it up.
http://bp2.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/ReizxK8gZnI/AAAAAAAAAGA/KNpMQhZHqp4/s400/rx69.jpg
I've never been a fan of the S4 interior...especially the gray.
http://bp0.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/ReG_ZiAzJtI/AAAAAAAAAEo/TJbF02x35is/s400/rx01_1.jpg
So I began stripping it out.
http://bp2.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/ReprYq8gZqI/AAAAAAAAAGc/n1b8SEGeLCc/s400/rx71..jpg
And got a S5 interior... Much nicer!

I went with the single exhaust. This system is QUIET, and really makes this thing a sleeper.

And the tuning fun began.

I passed emissions once I disconnected the wastegate rod. Soon after, I raced a 95-ish Corvette. I beat the vette, but the oil seal on my turbo went bye-bye.

So that brings us current. I was forced to upgrade my secondaries to 1600cc!! I was running out of fuel with the T04, so I don't think I'll have that problem with the 1600s. I have a 2-stage methanol injection system that is being perfected now. Here is the first stage. It's a very small injector, pre-turbo that comes on at 1 psi.
http://bp0.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/R47_gDlULMI/AAAAAAAAAV8/8ZbeHPud3Fw/s400/rx165.jpg
I'll get some pics of the rest of the system. Basically, it's the Devil's Own, 150 psi pump, and a much larger injector. Mounted after the turbo, and will be activated at 6 psi, by the MoTeC.

Very interesting way of doing the intake cooling. I was planning on doing AI but with a V-Mount setup. Could I possibly get more info on what you did to the throttle body to swap the cable over to an NA?
Great looking setup. Cant wait to see more.
stylEmon
04-13-2008, 01:39 PM
thanks. I may go to a physical intercooler in the future. But so far, the AI is WAY better than the stock intercooler. The best part about using only AI is, there is not pressure drop between the turbo and throttle body.
Basically, you simply take the TB linkage off, and put it back on, backwards. A bracket was made to lock the cable in place (see image). The hard part was, cutting the cable and re-solder the metal tip back on... but make sure the cable is cut at the correct length. The metal piece that you have to re-solder, is the piece that hooks around the throttle linkage. Hope that helps.

Looks like it belongs in that bin, don't it!
http://bp2.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/SATOYTlzVRI/AAAAAAAAAY4/YfcJ7yHoRa8/s400/rx185.jpg
Here is the second stage. I am running it post-compressor, pure methanol.
http://bp1.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/SATOZDlzVSI/AAAAAAAAAZA/mju3-JhkV9M/s400/rx189.jpg
Here is my original AI system. It's a small injector, pre comressor, and is now spraying RO water ONLY. it will stay in tact and is activated at 1 PSI.
http://bp0.blogger.com/_AEAL2Ej4Lgw/R47_gDlULMI/AAAAAAAAAV8/8ZbeHPud3Fw/s400/rx165.jpg
The second stage is wired into the MoTeC and went pretty smooth. So the MoTeC controls the AI system. Right now, the pump is on, or off. I don't yet have the ability to vary the duty cycle, but once I find the proper resistor, I'll have that ability.

It's been a while guys. I've had a little hick-up her and there and the car has been on the back burner.
What I did take care of:
The AI system is all wired to one pump. I still have two injectors; one pre, one post.
I had to track down a real annoying Fuel Pressure issue. The short story is, stock fpr is junk. I am looking to upgrade the rest of the fuel system but need to save up some cash. In the mean time, I'll get another stock fpr just to keep her on the road.
Got a new wideband sensor. I bought the LC-1 from a friend so it was lightly used. I was tired of guessing when it came to tuning so I replaced it.
That's it for now. I'll get some pics and keep ya'll up to date.

thanks. Yours looks pretty nice. Very clean and well done. I am a sucker for sleepers.
I've always wanted to go with the REW upper intake... I hate the FCs twisted upper intake.
There are a few things I wish I would've done now (S5 motor for rear plate, REW intake manifolds, light flywheel) but mine screams when I get on it so can't really complain.
rotorhead87
10-13-2008, 07:15 AM
I bet if you did switch over to a REW manifold and port matched it I would not be surprised if you pick up extra HP for your beast. It really helps the air flow smoothly go into the ports with the least resistance. I guess in the S5, S4 UIM the air gets crammed into the manifold, then the air has to make a climb up the manifolds ports. lol I hope that makes any sense, but I have no hate towards any rotary setups as long as she screams...right. I just happened to be a die-hard 13B-RE loyalist.
stylEmon
10-13-2008, 09:39 AM
i agree completely. That is the most efficient 13b intake set up. I've seen back to back dynos with an S5 UIM then a RE UIM. There was a decent amount of high end torque added with the RE.

i know they have one ceramic coating, maybe I just don't fully understand what constitutes ceramic. But I believe the coatings I have are different. They are a composite coating with includes gold, and some other oil shedding materials.
Just for a basic comparison, a DP will typically cost around 200-300 to get coated. I do not go directly to Polydyn so it may be different to go that route.

Now that I have the T04E, my 3.5" to 2.5" exhaust is useless. It's choking up my spool time and creating unnecessary back pressure. I changed to a 3.5" midpipe where the Magnaflo used to be, and then split to two 2.5" pipes with Apexi mufflers on the tips. It changes the whole stance of my car and makes it look much more aggressive. The only down side is, it's much louder too.

I know she's a bit dusty. She's been hanging out at the shop for too long. Anyway, I found the last pieces for my complete Series 5 interior swap. The rubber S5 radio surround really finishes off the dash. I've got to do a little work to get the idiot surround to fit with an S4 idiot cluster. But the rear hatch cover really sells the conversion!! I was so stoked to get this for $15!!!!!! It's in great shape, but needs just one stud on the passenger side to hold it in place.

the throttle is easy to do.
It took a while to get everything together for the interior. I was lucky to get the hatch cover for so cheap. Now I just need to clean it up.
There are a couple parts I need to paint still. The demister vents, passenger A-pillar, ash tray (just dirty). And a couple parts I need to retro fit. The S5 trim pieces in the rear (with the lights) don't match up. It will take a little extra work to get them mounted and to light up.

Now I will be able to tell if there is an issue with the fuel pressure at a glance... Finally. This could've saved me a lot of guess work earlier.

Here is a 4th gear pull from about 3000 to 6000 RPMs. I have a 9psi wastegate spring, but you can see, in 4th, it gets up to about 12 psi. The car is tune for that range, so it isn't a big deal... The turbo is just letting me know it wants to be opened up some more!!
The outside temp was around 70*F. I am running 50/50 water/methanol. It's great to see the AIT drop under boost like that.

I spent the day mounting my Lambda gauge in place of the stock (worthless) clock. It was a little tricky. What do you think?

A little free advertising for some companies I've used... To get a sticker on the outside, you have to give ME stuff ;)
The radiator panel just cleans up the engine bay SO much.
I should be getting matching rims in a week or two. Then I'll be looking to install a small front mount intercooler.
