Hi, my name is Alex Kauntz, I live in Ohio. Just finished my freshman year at Miami University in Oxford, OH and I am majoring in electrical engineering. I came here from the Mazda247 forums because ultimately I believe they did not want to discuss modification in detail.

My backround with rotories is really just interest and a ton of research. No one around me really enjoys and values rotory engines (or even knows what they are) like I do, so I was hoping to find a place to talk about my interests! My oldest brother owns an 06 Subaru Impreza STI, my older brother owns a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and I am the yougest, owning nothing of my own. Yet. My dream would be to own some kind of rotory car, either an rx8 or, if it comes out, and rx9. Being forced to settle I would probably buy a Mazda, be it MS3 or the new diesel tt Mazda 6.

To end things off nicely I give you a humorous quote:
"I keep trying to put some cams in my car, but these funny dorito shaped things keep getting in my way!"

Good to have you Alex!

If you want a cheap little beater that will run for a long time, get an RX7 (typically FC) if you want to sink a fortune in a car you almost never can drive, get an RX7 (FD). If you want to have a little more refinement and don't mind the expense, an RX8 isn't a bad option.

While you are in college, I recommend the FC.

Hey I'm so glad to see that someone replied hahaha. Last forum it took A LONG TIME for anyone to say welcome. So thanks! Glad to be here.

I have heard that alot. That is, the FD's being alot of work and not a very reliable daily driver. Im not too sure I want an FC mainly because I was always a fan of that fd3s tt13B the FD has, and so I think I would always think "I wish I would have gotten one of those instead". In terms of the Rx8 I have heard they are expensive. They suck up oil. They suck up premium fuel. Etc.

Ultimately I cant really definatively tell you what I am going to get until I have the money and know what cars are out (as the new twin turbo mazda 6 and Rx9 are not even out yet.)

My longest living plan has been to get an Rx8. I heard that of the rotories, it is the best daily driver. Plus it has a good quality that I absolutely REQUIRE in a car. It must be extremely Blue. Like the rally blue you see on 04-07 STI's, but blue-er.

The problem with this is driving me nuts though. A huge problem I am seeing is that a lot of people who own Rx8's weren't exactly rotor heads. Moreover, they are just people who got the car b/c it was unique or interesting, and really didnt know how to take care of the car. I, too often, find descriptions saying "only redlined once or twice!" or "oiled meticulously every 7000 miles!" and this turns me off. These cars need to be oiled every 3-5k miles (at max) and redlined once everytime you run the car, not once in its entire lifetime! Aside from this, the car is rwd. While I absolutely love this and it makes the ideal setup for the car, this means after I graduate college I will need my dd for winter and not just summer. And rwd in the winter...

So in wrap up if anyone uses their Rx8 in the winter, let me know if it is even do-able. Maintence wise, the Rx8 is ok because I love to work on my car. If its just an oil change, tire rotation, or some new mod, I love the work. It is only a plus to me. Anyway thank you for listening to my rants, raves, and complaints!

Thoughts on an Rx8 as a daily driver?
