Before I began, I would like to apologize for the way car show was handled.
I have had several people not quite satisfied with the way the car show was handled and for the next year, it will be handled in the following manner.
1. Judges will go through a training on how to judge a car show
2. Car show will be judged in following area using point scoring system.
EXTERIOR BODY – 20 pts
Cleanliness 1 – 5 pts
Modifications 1 – 10 pts
Paint and Graphics 1 – 5 pts
ENGINE – 20 pts
Cleanliness 1 – 5 pts
Modifications 1 – 10 pts
Paint/powdercoating/polishing 1 – 5
UNDERCARRIAGE – 10 pts
Cleanliness 1 – 5 pts
Suspensions/stance 1 – 5pts
WHEELS – 15 pts
Cleanliness 1 – 5 pts
Appearance/Size 1 – 10 pts
INTERIOR – 15 pts
Cleanliness 1 – 5 pts
Entertainment 1 – 5 pts
Special Features 1 – 5 pts
OVERALL APPEARANCE – 20 pts
1 – 20 pts
TOTAL = 100 pts
*Show car form will be given out at the registration and it must be on your car*
**Top 5 cars from each categories will be judged again by different judge(s)**
***In case of tie(s), following category score will be looked at to determine the winner - 1. Overall Appearance. If tied: 2. Total Exterior Body Score. After that, 3. Engine total score... and then 4. Interior.***
3. New categories will be created when more than 10 cars are present (example if 10 or more 20B cars are signed up by a month before the event)
4. New categories such "Best Engine Bay", "Best Exterior Mods", "Best Stance", and "Best Stock" will be created.
5. Best of show winner can not win 2 consecutive years as Best of Show nor qualified to win 1st place. 1st place winner can win 1st place and Best of Show following year. Also Best of the show winner will be asked to be a judge following year.
6. Parking issues will be resolved.. I know parking was a mess because of the location and people not moving their cars.. A night before, we will make sure people who's parking in the lot will move next morning by 8:30.. If you can't wake up by then, we will ask you to park across the lot. Since people don't take these things serious without penalty, If your car is not moved by 9AM, I will call a tow service and get the car towed at your expense. NVNC is a private lot and early warning is given when signed up, and at the lodge when you check in. Also, if not moved, we will find out who you were and you will be banned for DGRR the following year.
These are just few steps in which we will take so the event goes smoother next year.
Again, I apologize for the way the car show portion went and how the outcome came about...
Phil

Best RHDs??

Should "Best V8 RX7" be along the lines of "Best conversion" or "best swap" or something more inclusive?
I've seen pictures of RX7s with Toyota 1JZs and 2JZs, Nissan RB26s, SR20s and more. Heck, there is an FB on here with a diesel. Those are just as complicated (probably more so, actually) than the common V8 swap and should be eligible, if one came out.
Also, you could expand the category to go the other way too. For example, we has a Nissan Silvia and a Toyota Corolla with Rotary swaps in them, and they wouldn't fit in otherwise.

Yea i have noticed by the results in the cars/people that won the show categories, not all but some . Allot of favoring was part of the judging in the car show...
The plan for next years car show judging will be more fair.

Chip, can you be a judge?? I'm serious!!
Regarding other conversion.. if there is enough cars, signed up, I'll set that up. But if only say 2 cars, its not worth adding a new category.
Next year, the car shows will be taken ALOT more seriously than this year... Point system will help in this manner with less bias. Also, with different categories such as "Best Track Car", "Best Engine", etc.. those of you who might not of won can win..
Again, I'm not going to make everyone happy, but this will come closer and more fair. Hope you guys understand where I'm coming from.

Although i did not get to attend DGRR i have seen the photos of some cars that have won. One thing i would highly suggest is:
Body panel fitment: 1-5
I looked at a few photos of a few cars and thought "wow it's win worthy...

Yea no problem Phill... i will be more than happy to help out with the judging. At the same time i will be more involved with the event next year.
I will have lots of goodies from chips Motorsports to pass out. I will set up a table/both style parts and services offered from chipsmoto, my gold digger/rx7 will be on display for reference of the work wee can perform here at Chips etc...
Count me in for sure.
Thanks

That would be awesome Chip!! I been dreaming about seeing that car.
I also appreciate vendors being involved in the events too. I think you guys know you stuff and seen many many rotaries.
Anyhow, I appreciate you accepting the role as a judge next year... Now 3-4 more people I need to ask and pick :)

I will be the first to say that if I can make it to next years DGRR, I will have NO interest or part of the car show. Although I am an avid car show attendee/participate, I plan on spending all my time driving the roads in and around the Dragon.
The 4 to 5 hours I spend cleaning, polishing, shinning etc etc.. can be put to better use driving around in my FD.
This is my personal feeling and decision. It has NOTHING to do with anything or anyone or how things went down.. I made that decision on my drive back home this past Sunday...
Lastly, I think Phil has made a good decision to be better organized. It is a great event on the East Coast and it would be great to have it for years to come..

Yeah, honestly I didn't go for a show, I drove up from Florida to beat the crap out of my car on some mountain roads :) I actually attempted to clean the outside of the car while I was up there, but decided it was a waste of time completely. I am glad you got the event together in the first place, THANK YOU! If there were actual prizes for winning the show, (cash, parts, etc) I might understand people getting upset about rules, execution, whatever, but the only BIG thing was the Modified spread (and I guess THAT is a big deal)
I guess what I am attempting to say in this post is that I would stress on it too much Phil, it seems like for the most part everyone had an amazing experience.

Just wanted to say that I thought the show went smoother this year than last though Phil. I did want to put on record 2gslse's idea for the banquet and have the prize table/announcers in the "center" of the room. This would make it easier for seating and for everybody to hear more clearly.
Good job this year though overall!

+1 In the 3 years I've been, this has always been an issue for me at least. My hearing isn't all that great, lol. That lil megaphone just doesn't cut it. It's hard to hear ya in the morning during the announcements/safety chat and I wasn't more than 10-15 feet away. Moving to the center or seeing if we can get somebody to loan us a small PA set up would be great.
Excellent event though, I've loved each year more than the last.

Its really amazing that there is negative feedback about this. I believe the event is about driving the roads, hanging with fellow rotorheads and being around great people in general. The car show is an added bonus to share and reflect knowledge and info. that we all can learn from to better help our own builds, etc. If somebody(ies) really have their panties in a wad about not deseving a trophy or best of show thats pretty selfish in my opinion. In fact DGRR doent need people like that in attendance. Go to N.O.P.I. and enter if you really are seeking to be the center of attention. Phil, John and others put in tons of time to make this the best rotary event in the country. Its held in an area of the country that offers some of the best roads in the world. Come to the event with that in mind. These cars were built from the factory to do so. G

I would also encourage having a "car show". It is part of the DGRR culture and since inception, the car show is what brings all the people together as a whole. It is what separates the "rotary group" from the rest of the other groups like "Porsche, Minis, etc." Although winning trophies/awards are second in nature, the car show is a time for people to gather in groups to reflect on each others' hard work and pride & job; this is where bondings between fellow rotaryheads take place. It is where people who is foreign to the rotary world feels welcomed and accepted and learn about rotary cars such as my friend Mike (yellow porsche guy) who has nothing but good to tell the rest of the world what a wonderful event DGRR has becoming, and will be selling his 911 for an FD!! (LOL)
I vote for the car show and strongly encourage Phil to continue to improve it and refine it. It should not be a mandatory event, people can still choose to run the dragon/skyway etc. But the "car show" for the lack of better terms serves a much bigger purpose and what DGRR is all about!! This is "Where all the rotaries reunit!!"

I think the car show is a great idea and should be kept. Its one of the few times when most of the rotaries are all together in one place and not ten different spots. With that being said I agree with the people complaining about the parking/placement of the cars. It seemed a little like "favorites" were picked for the main lot and the rest were in the side lot. I know this was probably not intentional and im thinking the two lots has a lot to do with this.
Maybe if we moved the car show to the dam and do it like we do the picture rx8s, fds, fcs, sa.fbs. That way were all in a group, there already sorted by category which would make the judging easier and that way there arent cars that are over looked. Or even put the vendors in the main lot and have all the other cars over in the big gravel lot.
But either way ill be there next year, the car show in my opinon is a very small part of dgrr and if people are getting so worked up about it then there missing the point. I mean where else can you build beer pyramids at a awards ceremony...SOCIAL
