The best part of the whole rally was the driving. I mean all of it. Every road to and from the dragon is simply amazing. The dragon itself is the icing on the cake. To be honset, I find the roads to and from the best. Getting to see everyone again and meeting new people came a close second haha!
The worst part is the food around the lodge. That burger place is awesome but everything else falls flat!

I had a great time the whole trip! Driving the gap was great, and being at th lodge and the cabin hanging out with new friends was great!..... the bad.. well me and a small group decided to go up to the gap and make a few passes on saturday. well I lead our pack and we got .4 miles on it and me and the driver behind me both got ticked for going 76 in a 30! the other driver got 74... so those are pretty hefty tickets and somewhat ruined the gap for that afternoon.. we then decided to go drive the skyway not knowing how long it really was. on the way we hooked up with another group going to the skyway. we got to the top and were worn out of driving by then. somone in the group thought that it was quicker to keep going on the skyway because to looped around back towards the cabin. well we finnished the whole thing and stopped at a gas station in A town that had no power. by then we saw that the quickest way back was to go back on the entire skyway. so we drove back and got there just in time for the banquete. at the banquete I won a bunch of really cool prizes and that made up for the whole day i think!
All in all I had a blast and cant wait for next year!

LOL. Best was getting back with the rotary community at an event like DGRR. Roads were awesome, everyone friendly, not too punishing being in a
v8.
Worst was the drive home from the Mitty....

haha good one Adler... guess that's photo proof of the other bad part of his trip. I too was in the little group that went alllllll the way down the skyway and then had to turn around and go back. I was the girl in the blue rx8... not one of the losers who got pulled over.
Best part of DGRR is of course driving on the awesome roads and meeting fellow rotary lovers... got to meet a lot of new people this year and see a lot of familiar faces too. I'm already ready to go back.

Worse: Sitting in traffic on I-81 for almost 4 hrs on the trip down Thursday night. A tornado took out a truck stop and dumped trailers all over the interstate.
Best: Riding with a bunch a cool FD's. It was good to see the other 20b's and meeting folks I had only talked to on the forum.

The good..riding with the "porsche guy" and got pulled over and BS his way out of a ticket, also the drive was fantastic on Friday morning to and from Skyway, Last but not least, winning 1st place in old school class.
The bad..I hate MINIs ...especially after this trip

The whole trip was awesome for me. I have NEVER seen so many rotaries in my life, it was fantastic! Here in Jacksonville it is just a sea of riced out Civics..
I was absolutely amazed at how awesome everyone was. There was not a single rude person in the group. I have been to car meets were I felt uncomfortable the entire time cause everyone was in their own little group, but everyone at DGRR was completely approachable.
Another thing that impressed me were the older rotor heads. It was great to meet gentlemen my grandfathers age that still cared about their cars, and were involved in the rotary community. Meeting guys who bought their first gens brand new, still had them, and maintained and improved them for over 30 years, is absolutely amazing to me.
And of course there are the roads. I live in Florida, were every road is straight and long, and ruled by wanna be drag racers. The dragon was severely intense, though I thought the skyway proved to be just as fun. I was finally able to use all the skills I learned dodging cones on a real road. They especially came in handy when I half slid off the road after hitting gravel on moonshiner 28. But even that was a blast!
The only bad thing I can think of for the whole weekend it that I live 8 hours away from it. I want to go for a drive now, and wish it was just 30 minutes away...

Good- car ran good, no broken or damaged parts. All around a nice drive with great people.

Bad - the 4.5hr drive up there
Will definitely be going back next year...i was in the two-toned RX-8 :)

The good: The Rx-4 made the trip and I could actually push it pretty hard around the gap! I had the front brakes smoking at the lookout at one point.
The bad: Taking the Rx-4 on the trip. No cruise control, LOUD exhaust, 4 speed transmission, 4000 RPM for endless hours on the interstate equals I'M HEARING IMPAIRED!

Good: most of the trip.
Bad: blown motor, blown passenger front wheel bearing, and the u-haul behind my mom's van on Sunday morning.
I already sourced a junkyard 12a. Disassembly starts soon.

The quickest way back was actually not down Skyway. We really were half way at that gas station. We were really fortunate that we went on though...
Right as we passed the Advance Auto (or was it Autozone) on 411 we got a call that Tray's multi-colored FD wore through the chassis harness on the dragon when someone had it out for a run. Fortunately we were on our way with cell reception at an auto parts store lol. A few crimps and cuts later and we brought it on home.

Another killer DGRR!
GOOD: Meeting a bunch more guys I've only seen through the Internet, the Skyway drive was great, Atlanta caravan was great. Getting picked to wear one of this year's "hate on Rich" T-shirts was great. The banquet was a BLAST, won a few good prizes and was cracking up the whole way through.
BAD: Lots of traffic on the Dragon, but I figured as such. With the Dragon half closed last year we had a unique opportunity, I did MANY full-bore blasts through last year. Wish I could have had more time to talk and meet more of you guys. The drive up through the rain Wednesday night sucked, but I discovered the magic touchless car wash that made it all better :).
Here's to next year!

Best: This year I did outdoor nature type stuff and it was a blast. Met some nice and welcoming people as always. Did some spirited driving through the Gap, and made my passenger puke :puke:
Worst: There's never enough time to do everything you want to do, we should make it a week long event! Like always, I never get to meet all the faces I would like to. Next year I will ride the Skyway! every year I say I'll do it and never do.

Good: Over 180 miles of the trip down I managed 30.1mpg with no thermo sensor and no O2 sensor. I don't think my car likes sensors. It spat the O2 sensor out completely first turn on the dragon. Talk about sounding like a tractor...
Great: The roads. The Dragon is incredible, but in a lot of ways I prefer 28. I did get to have a nice clean fast run down The Dragon Friday morning doing an S4 NA's best to keep up with Kevin Henderson lol. No cops, and only a few turns of a Triumph that got out of the way. Skyway is incredible, but there's nowhere to pull off for the best views. I prefer 441. That road is simply stunning, and there are pull offs near the peak that cover a huge swath of valley without trees getting in your way. It is simply breathtaking.
Greatest: The people. I less than three BAW cabin. The rest of you guys are awesome as well. People are so nice, they will sell you a set of RB sway bars for $5... :) Thanks again to the man in that beautiful Celica. Everyone I ran into from giving random folks rides to seeing people I met last year, to meeting new people from online were all very friendly.

Best part... Talking engine tech with Chuck Westbrook and Kyle Krutilek.
Then with Logan, Peter and Matt from Defined Autoworks.
But the highlight was when Holley introduced us to Jim Downing and Rick Engman at Road Atlanta.
We (Jonathan, Jack, Matt, and I) picked Rick's brain for an hour! What a wealth of info.
Part of his info has us designing a new engine cooling project to try and solve the number 1 and "root cause" for rotary failures.
Nice seeing old friends like Steven and his wife Anna, Dale, G, Rich, (and his Posse) and new guys Jose, Chris and Brian.
Worst Part.... Bottoming out on hard "G" outs on the Dragon and rolling a fender lip. What is the best street adjustable shock compromise?

I will definitely find you next year. I seem to have a knack for tracking that guy down.
He pulled in behind all the FC's in the gravel lot Saturday. He said he was only staying for a few hours though. I did catch his name, but I caught a lot of names I don't quite remember. He was gonna scrap the sway bars, but brought them by in case anyone wanted them first.
I think Evil Aviator may know who he is. The three of us were chatting back there for a bit.

Hello everyone, this was my first year but won't be the last attending this awesome event. While I don't drive a rotary car I'm still in the Mazda family and have always been a fan of Mazda and their rotary cars.
Best part was how the group welcomed me even though I was not driving a rotary car and entrusted me to lead the Friday morning big loop drive.
Worst part was having to take my car up a "Jeep trail" to get to my cabin.

Sir, I tell you what, rotary or not, you were SERIOUSLY quick in that thing. I was part of the leading group (white rx8, no spoiler, no-pistons stickers in the back window) and you were just simply GONE most of the time. I have said countless bad things about turbo'ed FWD cars in my time, and I take them all back (ok, maybe not ALL of them, lol). It was cool you sharing the story about having a motor blow in a car in front of you then showing me the marks the chunks of motor left on your car.
Look forward to seeing you next year!

Me too despite the V8 swap...I joke that I was driving rotary before some of these "kids" knew what a rotary was. Got to meet some guys that could say the same about me lol.
Best part was how the group welcomed me even though I was not driving a rotary car and entrusted me to lead the Friday morning big loop drive.
Same, overall a warm reception with the expected ribbing on my swap. Rotary community is still tops in my book for friendliness and openness to other vehicles/engines/etc.
Thanks for leading us on our Friday drive and for taking Gringo (Kevin) and I to Robbinsville for lunch.

HA! Now That was an AWESOME Time!
Best - EVERYTHING!
Worst - Non-Pulling Over Bitches on the Dragon...
Best = Never saw one cop. Survivor of 4 events for me and plan on going to every single event there will be at the DG! Hope Phil plans on doing this next year (Thanks phil!!). I just cannot type here how enjoyable this event is each year.
Worst = Sitting at the US border waiting to go into canada and a person decides to switch lanes and backs into my car pushing the bumper under the hood. Also I never seem to have enough time to meet everyone, do the little things like sit at one of the corners video taping all of the rx7s flying throughout the gap, do the skyway etc.

Had an overall great time again, this being my 2nd time at DGRR, 1st time was last year. If I had to pick the "Best" part of this year's trip, it would be driving the skyway/dragon loop Friday AM. The Sunday excursion to the Mitty and the parade laps at Road Atlanta was pretty awsome too.
The bad? Not much, just the tree pollen making a mess of my car & lungs, and the lack of coffee first thing in the AM at Nantahala village.

Best: No tickets! And we still have both rotors (unlike last year)! A little different being in a RHD. It was awesome when Kevin (ZGN) glanced over and said, "I don't remember the dropoff being that far down!"
Worst: No AC. But then again, in the 10 or so years we've had an RX-7, I think we've only had AC for a total of one month.

The Bad: The 12 hour run home Sunday on seriously short sleep after our "neighbors" kept us up til 2 AM yelling like idiots. Thanks to all of those who put a bitter ending on an otherwise sweet weekend.

I've heard rumors that AC actually exists. :dunno: In our case, AC consisted of a batter-powered necklace fan that quickly ran out of battery power. :chillpill:

I will post nothing else since I missed this year:o10::o10::o10:

IAN... Ah, ha! How long was trip back for you and John and Brian? Good meeting you guys.
Pete89T2... Good meeting you. Love the car.
Rx Se7evn... Heard you had to stop every few hundred miles? But it got home under its own power unlike mine. Think I spun a bearing.
Supernaut... Were you with Collin on the way back? And, what's the deal on air conditioning?

I lost count. Two days probable over 16hours of driving. The trip back seems so long. Especially every year its to rain and no leaves on the tree lol. Nice meeting all of you.... (John got stuck in traffic/construction for hours, Bryon probable cannot hear due to traveling with the windows up and the RX4 is a little loud)

We had a great time again this year, and I think our fellow Nova Scotians enjoyed it too!
Best: Driving the dragon, going to The Mitty, hearing the angels sing when the four-rotor went by on the front straight. Great weather, lots of cool cars, dinner at our cabin and meeting some new friends and seeing some folks we met last year.
Worst: The long drive home - 3 full days, over 1700 miles. Ugh.

By the way, I am writing a story for my local paper about this (I work for the paper in marketing and also freelance for them). I will post a link when it's available.

The bad: Taking the Rx-4 on the trip. No cruise control, LOUD exhaust, 4 speed transmission, 4000 RPM for endless hours on the interstate equals I'M HEARING IMPAIRED!
Hahaha! I hear that Buggy...or I think I do. Mine was the same way cept I only had to drive to and from Texas, straight pipe and a straight through 'muffler' at 4200 RPM will leave your ears ringing.
Best: The ATL Caravan, it was pretty cool seeing that many rotaries crusing down the road.
Worst: Leaving, the weekend always go by so fast. Wish I had more time to hang out with the people I see once or twice a year.

The Best - so many good things!
1 Great Roads
2 Great People
3 Great Cars
4 Winning the FD Clutch that we needed to fix the junk one in the car now
5 Visiting with Brian Smith ( Owner of Rotorsports Racing ) who gave me my first opportunity to work on a Mazda race car
6 Visiting with my old boss ( JIM DOWNING ) at the Mitty
7 Visiting with my engine builder ( RICK ENGMAN ) at the Mitty
The worst
1 Time flies when you're having fun - event was too short
2 Returning home to cold, rainy Indiana where the gas prices are outrageous and the roads are horrible

The Best: The fact that the event happened yet again, and that nobody got hurt.
The Worst: Date conflict with the Mitty so I had to make a choice between the two. :(
The Mitty was a lot of fun though, but very different from DGRR. Totally different sort of experience. On my way back to Michigan, I just followed the Blue Ridge Mountains back north. Got to run the Skyway, the Dragon, and the Blue Ridge Parkway (for the 1st time) and had a blast just taking my time and enjoying the cruise. :)
Glad everyone had a good time at DGRR. Wish I could've been there for it...

Best: Always, socializing with some of my old friends, meeting new friends, and driving the 318 curves. The caravan was awesome to Nantahala and to the Mitty. :driving:
Worst: Date conflict with the Mitty I didn't want to make a choice between the two, so I attended both, but really wish I could have made the Mitty the other 2 days also. I hope I don't have to split my time between them again.

Oh, and I didn't get to enjoy some beer with Titanium because he had to work his magic on too many broken 7's. Didn't get to be 'touched' by RedR1, and nobody brought me a glass sunroof.
Yeah, never did get to give you a ride either, that's ok though..... she's WAY faster now that we played with the boost control a little.
Good: 6 V8ed rx-7s showed up!!!
Bad: all the damn rotary cars!!!! haha... jk... bad part is that it is only 2-3 days long...
May have to start "Deals Gap Former Rotaries Rally" for us dark siders...
One of my best moments was going toe to toe.... or bumper to bumper with a certain LT1 FD and then having the driver say, wait till I'm through with breakin, and me saying, wait till I'm off Wastegate :smilielol5: I will eat your silly V8 for breakfast and poop it out on the side of the rd ;) :hugs:
Best: driving my twincharged setup for the first time
Worst: Oil pan getting a massive leak
Funny - having to clean oil off my front bumper and windshield every 100 miles
Hahaha! I hear that Buggy...or I think I do. Mine was the same way cept I only had to drive to and from Texas, straight pipe and a straight through 'muffler' at 4200 RPM will leave your ears ringing.
quit yer whining.... my car cruises @ 4k on the highway too..... but my mufflers are turbo's!
Worst.... the severe lack of sleep! Lets see..... woke up Tuesday and went to work... went to sleep Wednesday around 10..... AM... woke up ~ 1 PM.... wash rinse repeat... sleep Thursday ~10am, woke up 1pm, worked worked worked welded welded left Friday ~ 5:30am, caught a few hr nap in the car sometime on Friday and then on Saturday morning was repacking wheel bearings @ 5am.... then finally 7 hrs sleep on a pool table Sunday morning..... wow.... definately need to get down there WAY earlier next year
Best - The RX7 Support Vehicle! We all must Praise MATT!
There are so many Bests, they can't be listed. The whole event is incredible. It is the highlight of my automotive year and I thank you VERY much Phil for all that you do. Can't wait till next year! I'm definately bringin the Jeep though

Yea I was with him part of the way.
AC? I dunno. People are always so shocked when they find out my AC works. Many people I've met don't even bother trying to fix it or put it back on their cars. I can't live without it.

gonna work very hard to be even more prepared for next year and maybe not be running quite as rich hehehehe

I always hear everyone complaining about gas prices, but where we live, it currently costs about $5.40 USD/gallon for self serve regular.
To us, $3.70 - $4.40 was practically free!!!
