View Full Version : Oil Coming out the blowoff, air bypass valve
I have heard from the pro's that this could be due to bad carbon seal in the turbo.
Could over topping your oil also produce this? I was a bit over my full mark right after an oil change and this is when it started happening. I drained out to right below the full mark and cleaned off the oil from around the BOV's and now it has seemed to stop. Is this just coincidence?

I don't think over filling it a tad will hurt it. I'm pretty sure it comes from the turbos because I have it also, and I think we have the same turbos. I just put a filter on the end, so when it Blow's off oil doesn't go everywhere.
Mine was coming out so bad that is was dripping on the exhaust and burning off. :(

No, overfilling will not effect it, I run my oil almost a quart high when racing.

Dang, that may be something else then, unless the turbos are just completely shot.

Wow a quart, maybe I need to try that. I have some oil pressure drops under certain corners, I'm assuming this fixed that.
I guess it's not like a piston engine where you have the crank slinging oil everywhere, there really isn't anything in our oil pan.

My oil filler neck is vented into the intake nipple on the front turbo. I think by overfilling oil, the turbo was easily able to suck oil up the filler neck, into the intake side of the primary turbo causing a mess under boost. Or at least this is what I am optimistically thinking.
Where does everyone vent their oil neck to?

It's hooked to the primary turbo inlet because that is the only place that sees constant vacuum (unlike an NA engine). A little oil in the intake tract and BOV isn't unusual and doesn't necesarily mean your turbos are bad. Monitor it to make sure it doesn't get worse, but it's probably normal. Frequent high boost and sweeping right handers might aggravate the problem. FWIW, once every year or so, usually in the winter, I pull my IC and clean it out with a little hot water and dishsoap

What vintage is your car? If it was early, built in 1991, it may have had the same problem mine did - throwing oil into the intake on LH corners at track days. A replacement oil pan (different baffling, IIRC), done under warrantee, pretty-much fixed the problem on mine.
So, extra oil would definitely make this worse.

That's a good thought. I have been noticing more oil coming out since I started trying to run more oil for the track.

What vintage is your car? If it was early, built in 1991, it may have had the same problem mine did - throwing oil into the intake on LH corners at track days. A replacement oil pan (different baffling, IIRC), done under warrantee, pretty-much fixed the problem on mine.

Now that I think about this, the oil may have gotten into the intake tract during the previous high-speed RH corner, and then was being burned off when I got on the gas again for the LH corner mentioned above.

Keep an eye on the fan connectors near the lights. One of mine popped off while working on my car recently and the connectors (when viewed unplugged) were nasty looking from oil being sprayed and accumulating in them. I'm not a fan of vented BOVs due to the oil misting that gets all over the engine bay over time.
