Who is running NASA?

I'm starting TT's with them in June. I've only done 2 events with them so far but I'm pretty impressed with the way they run things.

Im going to do a few this year more than likely Barber and Road Atlanta. Not sure which car ill be in though, have to see how the Rx7 is on reliability first.

I worked with NASA mid-atlantic quite a bit in the past and they are a great group to run with. Their events are usually pretty busy, but I enjoy watching some exciting door-to-door racing inbetween HPDE and TT events. They are very organized and get a lot done in one weekend, it can feel like a circus sometimes.

NASA is very novice friendly, great for beginners. They also seem to have a more 'laid back' atmosphere... everybody has a good time. (note: they are not 'laid back' about safety :) )

I was looking at NASA, as I run SCCA and SARRC events now.

The thing that is appealing to me about NASA, yet on the other hand.. intimidating... Is the car classification.
MAN you need an excel spreadsheet and a slide rule to figure it all out.

You can do ANYTHING to the car..... for a point penalty. IE class bump.

But it got really hairy when you are looking at things like.. removed glove box for X points, and running slicks X wide for Z points.. and removed headliner for .5X points. And used a undertray for Z points.
Oh wait I dynoed ABC HP. And th Car weighs XYZ pounds.. so Im in Class sdkjh. But I have slicks.. so Im in something else.

I think if you have a engineer to help figure your class youre ok.
And I would assume they do have people who will assist with that, because it was wild... the breadth of the rules for classing a car.

I theorise you could have a Chevy Chevette.. with a Turbocharged, small block and proper safety equipment, and slicks.. and wings.. and. Wait. The Suzuki Escudo from Gran Tourismo 2. Against a modded AC Cobra, if the classification ended up the same.

It was pretty wild the ability to balance cars.
I was thinking my ITA RX-7 with a peripheral ported 20B, and full undertray, with slicks, and a nice widebody kit, with wing.. and there is a class for it.
Not simply SPO. Like SCCA.

SPO in SCCA is over I think 2.5 Liters. BUT.. you could run up against a GT1 corvette from Chevy, with a twin turbo setup, and be in a chevette with a small block. And thats it.
OR.
ANYTHING you want. A stationwagon with a 12 Cylinder Rolls Merlin engine in back.

Not Very balanced. NASA I think has worked up a system to balance the cars more evenly. On paper. If you can figure it out.

There is a guy on the other forum, Robs81GSL, who has been racing his FB for a couple years (250 horsepower on a streetported 12A). He is building a TII now, and is having it dyno tuned to a specific horsepower so that he can be in a certain classification. Both of his cars are major beasts. At rotary revolution a few years ago (I want to say '05), his FB was passing FD's on the corners! Insane car. His FC is going to be even crazier.

And he runs NASA. From what he was telling me last year, if I had weekends off, NASA would be the way I'd go. I didn't really like much of what he was saying about SCCA, but loved the idea behind how NASA is run, though that could be because he is bias towards NASA.

The local NASA guy just told me I can class My GTUs as a TII since the only difference is the motor. It'll be my first year in NASA and the First time my GTUs goes to the track.

I wanted to know what class I'd be in JUST for the TII swap (the GTUs chassis is lighter than a TII) but they apparently think that the GTUs had turbo EVERYTHING except the motor. SHould be a fun summer.

I have a question: If I join NASA NOW do I have to renew at the beginning of next season? or next May?

I think right now the NASA crowd has more against the SCCA than the SCCA crowd does against NASA. I'm sure this has to do from the past since SCCA had been the big dog forever but now NASA is growing large enough to hold its own. Just a few weeks ago SCCA stated that they now recognize NASA licenses as a valid race license.

All clubs have their advantages and disadvantages and their is nothing wrong with running, or being a member of multiple clubs. I'm a member of SCCA and NASA, and I also run some track days with BMWCCA, etc. If you plan on runing for fun and don't really care about trying to win a regional trophy or compete nationally most people seem to just run with whomever comes to the local tracks.

Next May, It's good for a year from the time you sign up, same goes for SCCA.

What event are you doing for the classing? I would see if you would gain more of an advantage classing it as a modded NA.

I started to figure out the points for final classing. My intention is to run HPDEs and ventually time trials

I should be running HPDEs in the FB by the end of the year in Norcal. Hopefully Llihrednuht (Thunderhill Reverse) in October, but if not then there's one or two events I may be able to run at after that. Anyone here going to show up for the 25hr?
