View Full Version : New 20b NA Headers by Defined Autoworks

Logan Defined Autoworks has made a new set of headers for me. These are an advance on his last 20b NA headers and is an example of the headers he is now building for testing and sale. These new headers were developed based on extensive testing and iterative redesign, but these are a newer design. We are going to do some testing on the dyno next week and will be able to show just how much power they add over a very good set of equal length headers I had on the car. I can't wait for the next few weeks dyno testing of both the new headers and the new intake plenum and runners. Logan Carswell and David Barninger (KD Rotary) will do the testing and we're thinking of videoing the sessions.
The headers are part of a significant upgrade of my entire exhaust system (as well as the air and fuel intake system). In addition to the headers, Dave Barninger is building a 3-way exhaust system that adds pipes as revs increase, and a new through bumper dual exhaust that is in my projects thread in the 3rd gen section.

Old Headers
Here are a few pictures of my old headers, which were very nicely done.

New Headers
Its hard to figure out which to show first. I didn't have a lot of build pictures, so I think I will just show the headers off by themselves as completed. They have not yet been ceramic coated.

So, the headers are finished and on there way to KD Rotary to be fitted and tested along with the new plenum I designed. We are going to dyno my base car as it is and then swap the headers and dyno again. Then, the old headers and new plenum and then the new headers and new plenum and runners together. We should learn a lot. Logan Carswell (Defined) anmd Dave Barninger (KD Rotary) will be doing the testing on Saturday the 19th. Anybpdy in the area who wants to come by, PM me. We'll have beer and sodas and coffee and snacks.

TitaniumTT... Great. Looking forward to meeting you. Where do you live, btw? I think this is going to be very interesting and show what can be achieved with better, more scientifically designed intake and exhaust systems with NA motors.

Project86... I deserve the hate... :)
There is still really no good update here, except that the new motor has about 12 dyno miles on it and we have done runs first with the old setup and then with the new plenum. That showed a 28 whp gain at peak power over the same run done immediately beforehand with the old setup. Again, these are runs done on a newly rebuilt motor and the seals have not bedded in yet. So, the absolute numbers are not valid, but the differences are. I hope that's clearly said? Here's a quick video of the motor with the new plenum, but not the new headers. Sounds pretty good to me.

The NEW HEADERS ARE INSTALLED and we are going to run it again this afternoon and see what difference the new headers make. Logan thinks 20 ft pounds, which would be awesome. I will post up something tonight or tomorrow.

What are you running for apex seals and injectors?? if you dont mind me asking :) and also... im gonna need one of those uim when i do my 20B build haha.

a 28 hp increase over stock? Gordon, my hat goes off to you and your fabricator-guy. that is awesome. how did the torque curves compare?
i can only imagine when the motor is fully broken in and the seals are bedded. do you plan to take the Defined header back off just to compare bedded versus non-bedded, or will you simply compare the differences with the Defined header?

not to speak out of turn, but i believe he's running a single set of Injector Dynamics 1000s (i.e. no secondaries). i have no idea what apex seals though.

Set of ID 1000's, and the idle L are rock solid, no wandering... I love those injectors so much.
and it's not a torque curve so much as a torque plateau. Carries all the way, I was impressed when I saw it.

so hes only running 3 injectors then? geez maybe i should think about doing it that way... i dunno... convince me. :)

There is no better injector than ID. You can't go wrong. Tuning would be easier, no staging to woory about. Simpler installation, one fuel rail..... why double your chance of leaksl injectors failing etc etc? ID or nothing for me from now on

Cheeesh... You guys need to get a room. I'm not doing more runs taking things on or off until after Deals Gap. I love the Injector Dynamics injectors. (Paul Yaw/Yawpower) I can't remember if I made the main point, which is that instead of a single pinhole squirting fuel, that single point branches into 6, like the ribs of an open umbrella, so for X amount of fuel coming out, that is divided by 6 at the chamber and so it atomizes way more efficiently. And Brian is right, the single injectors, whether 1000, 1600 or 2000cc are far easier to tune and my moto has been to go fir simplicity of everything about the motor.
I hope to have something to add tomorrow.
