Past few years, I been asking LEO's from TN and NC to come out to our event and give a lecture about the danger of US129.

I was wondering if someone could help me and get in touch with TN and NC LEOs??

They could either come out Friday Night or Saturday during lunch time.

Thanks!

Hey Phil,
I just got your email today. For some reason it went to my Junk folder. All the other DGRR emails make it. I called the closest police department (Bryson City) and they gave me the number for the NC Highway Patrol, but the secretary had already left for the day. I will try them again on Monday and let you know what they say.

Can you also ask if Blount county will come out? they would be the main people who will be giving out tickets:)

Having the LEO there before worked out well but they've always been from the North Carolina side, so here's a interesting thought I had. With all the BS the Tennessee HP was pulling up there last year on the Dragon do we really want to tell them we're coming? Would hate for them to decide to start the season off with us.

LAST year we had Blount county come out from TN.

I think they appreciate us getting them involved. All of them have said to me that no one does this at US129 and they said they wished all the groups will do this.

My thing is, we have such a diverse group, I need all to understand the danger and consequences on the dragon.. This is pretty much what I been preaching for last 4 years... Unfortunately I have to do this:)

I agree with the importance of everyone driving safely on the Dragon and the LEO from the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the Sheriffs Dept have done a great job in the past explaining it AND leaving us alone so to speak. But last year the Tennessee HP turned driving the Dragon into a joke for anyone on it after we were up there. It didn't matter what you were driving or how you were driving.

I pulled these off of tailofthedragon.com/ (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/)

TAIL OF THE DRAGON EXCLUSIVE – The State of Tennessee is spending more than $200,000 of taxpayer’s money to add overtime patrols at the Dragon this summer. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is receiving a $75,000 grant and the Blount County Sherriff Office is receiving $125,000. These grants will last through the summer and end on September 30, 2008.

In 2007 Tennessee grants to THP and BCSO for overtime totaled $120,000 and were in force from July 1 to September 30. During this period we witnessed unprofessionalism on the part of both agencies. The outright harassment of law abiding citizens cost Tennessee businesses millions of dollars in lost revenue. THP’s reputation was severely blackened, a major detriment to all enforcement agencies. Tail of the Dragon received some 1,000 complaints from riders and drivers many who promised not to spend a penny in the state.

Hopefully this year Tennessee will provide professional enforcement that will encompass both safety and goodwill toward tourists. Tail of the Dragon will be reporting their attitude on this site.

I hope so! The NCHP guy that has come out each time is a great guy and very cool about the whole thing. Hopefully the THP won't start their "hunting season" till later in the year.

The only police I saw last year were the officers that came to the BBQ and gave the safety talk. Then again we left not too long after since the wife had to be at work Sunday morning.

Holy Jesus there was a lot of TN cops during the summer last year! Good thing we'll be there during the "off" season. Man, you I would think three tops would be enough, but eleven!

When I was up there in OCT, I saw 0 LEOs or THPs saturday afternoon. Sunday late morning I saw 1-2 of them.

Far as I know they recieved a grant that starts in July. I'm hoping we'll be OK:)

Hey Phil,
For some reason I thought the Saturday gathering was at the Nantahala village and that is why my first attempt was with the closest agency (Bryson City). I just realized after looking at the pamphlet that it is at the dam, so I left a message with Blount County to see if they will come again.

golferfreddie
03-31-2008, 01:12 PM
Well crap, I just looked at the brochure thread and see that is at the Village. I will still talk to Blount County and see if they mind coming a bit farther for the talk.

My5ABaby
03-31-2008, 01:35 PM
Heh, you're having trouble Clint.

Before you took over ( :) ) I was going to talk to Blount County because I figured most of the Dragon in in Blount County so they might not mind going another 30 minutes. :dunno: That and I can talk to them in person in about 30 minutes. Going to Bryson City is about 2 hours. :(

so wait...for clarification, the saturday meet/show is at the dam as usual, or at the village in bryson city?

It is going to be at the village (Phil correct me if I am wrong) and I just got a call back from Blount County and they have declined to come to the village since it is so far out of their jurisdiction. I will give the NCHP a call since the local office (Bryson City) also declined to come to the village.

From DealsGap.com

"Well, the presence has started. Before you read on, please be very aware of who you are talking about when you mention nasty remarks about our local law. As of April 1st, the BCSO(our TN county sheriffs office) has started their summer campaign of having a presence in the area full time. These local Sheriffs Deputies are great people, and are very approachable. They are here for everyones safety, and us locals are very appreciative of that. We have been asking them to have some sort of presence for the last 3 years, and now they are finally doing something about it. Its a whole lot nicer to have them around when we need it than to wait half an hour for them to show. Please remember that the THP were the ones that were picking on the bikers, and not the BCSO. Having said that, I have met some of the newer THP for our area, and all were fantastic to talk/deal with. While I do think we will see an increased police presence this year, I dont think any of them will act as stupid as they did last year.... at least I really hope not. In this country, you are innocent, until proven guilty, so please remember that if you have to deal with any of these folks this summer."

Well I have called the NCHP twice and they have told me they would have the guy that is in charge of that area to call me both times and still nothing. I will keep trying.

The dispatcher for Swain County and Bryson City said that NCHP would have to do the talk, so right now that is my only option since Blount County won't travel that far.

Well I guess I just had to get on here and mention it. They just called me back and they have scheduled an officer to come by around 12:00. He said they will be short-handed this weekend and if something comes up that the officer may not be able to make it or may have to leave. He gave the officer my cell number so he can contact me if something does keep him from making it.

From tailofthedragon.com

April 4-6: Heard of a few warnings being issued by BCSO. They will be here every day so ride/drive accordingly.

All in all though I think we'll be fine, if ya mess up expect to get what ya deserve, otherwise have fun!

Well, I thought they were pretty kewl while we were there. Flew past a two of them park side by side (I'm guessing talking to eachother) today on my last run... they waved at me, so I waved back and carried on my merry way.

I talked to one at the Tobcat bridge late Saturday afternoon as he was heading home for the day. He was pretty well pleased with us as a group but did say he had to write one person up. As usual his main complaint was there were too many people crossing the yellow line. And the NCHP officer was pretty cool, even though he wouldn't put in handcuffs.

The first year we had the sheriff who came out put some of us in handcuffs and poses like we were being arrested and took pictures. I have them somewhere. So... I figured why not try again. He laughed about it and said he didn't want to end up in the News & Observer (Raleigh newspaper) but did take a couple of pics with me. Cool guy and nice of him to come out, and get on the gas a little bit (exhibition of speed!) as he left. Yep, it was a HEMI in that Charger.
