After WAY too much time wasted in completing this project, it's finally going to be in the car in the next 3-4 weeks. I'm hoping to assemble the engine by next week, but i have the weekend with my daughter next weekend, so the swap would be the following weekend at the earliest. Depends on how fast we can get the base maps back so the thing will attempt to run right.
Front cover is painted. Just have to finish painting the rest of the motor over the next couple days, and it'll be ready to assemble.
I'll post some more pics when I get home.
The actual port work:

Just a question for you, why is the exh port shape look funny? The outside upper edge of the port curves in instead of keeping with the original port shape. I see "BDC" did this for you, what were your goals for the car?
reddozen

I'd be happy with 300~350 to the wheels once I go FI at some point. This was more of a guinea pig project for bridge porting the Renesis.
There's a lot of debate weather it will have any noticeable impact on the engines performance... we'll see in about a month... lol
I'll dyno it once it's broken in. We'll have a better idea of what's realistic once I get there.

Called the local Mazda dealer, and they wanted $15 + $5 shipping, and Friday delivery.. I laughed at the guy and hung up. Called Racingbeat and they told me that the dealer list price is $7... gota love the stealorship. Racing beat didnt have any, so they directed me to Mazdatrix. The were able to ship one priority mail for cheaper than mazda, so we should still be on track for Saturday... FML.. lol

Yeah, the dealer markup on prices is ridiculous. Just like the ignition coils they want $65 a piece for, when I can get them at oreilys for $33 with a lifetime warranty, and its the same damn part. I dont get why they want to run off their customers by giving them the shaft every time you need something...

So much hate for Mazda dealers :) You should have called me. I can get parts from our local friendly dealership for right at cost. You have to be nice, and get to know people :)

Apparently Atkins left out a side seal, and sent RX7 FD apex seals... They're sending me the correct seals, so it will be 3~6 more weeks before I have another opportunity to try and put the motor in. I'm not very confident that it will be ready for deals gap, but we'll see...

Brian, how come it will be 3-6 weeks????
It'll probably take a week to get all the parts, and I'll have my daughter for the first time in 6 months from this weekend through next weekend, so that already puts it off for 3 weeks. Then I have to go to my dad's house and get tools for next time, cause that was a bitch to take apart. We had it handing by the top 3 tranny bolts and no way to break them when we had to start putting it all back together cause I need a car. I'm not looking forward to doing this shit again, but it has to be done, and I need to change my clutch anyway.
Anyone know how to repressurize the clutch peddle? That was all I lacked having everything reassembled last night.
Sephitrask,
Thanks for the offer... I'm in Tennessee though.
I'll take any help I can get though to keep this process from taking 5 days again... there's no reason that it should have taken this long... It's just a bitch with hand tools, and trying to "make due" with a very limited selection. I need a 3ft extension and a wobble socket to get to the tranny bolts easier for next time.

What do you mean by "repressurize" the clutch pedal? you mean as in bleeding it out so it doesn't hit the floor instantly when you push on it? When I had to replace my clutch master cylinder I bled it out at the point were the line going to the slave cylinder connects, cause I didn't want to deal with the slave cylinder. However, if you had the whole thing apart, bleed it from the slave. below is a link to the factory service manual on that. The only thing I would add it to unbolt the slave from the transmission and the bracket holding the line, it will make the process MUCH easier.

A dyno is a must :)... for the idle, did you bump your neutral switch or clutch switch during all the work or maybe its just bad (TSB from mazda on neutral switches)...

I would figure the surging idle is from the port job. That's how mine was. Actually both the last two times I've replaced the engine I've gone to a bigger port than before and each time it hunted for idle. If it's the same for you, I believe the tune itself should take care of it, maybe some minor adjustments to the idle screw also (if you have one, not sure how idle adjustments are set up for the RX-8).

Naa, the factory computer for the RX8 is probably one of the best ECUs ever created... the idle only starts surging after driving, or if it gets really hot. Since I got the SSV and VDI fixed, it does it less, and to less of an extreme, so I'm sure that was a lot of the issue.
Going to try setting the idle back to 1200 RPM tonight and see what happens.

No dyno numbers. To actually see anything, you'd need a before an after. I have no "before" pull on any of my local dynos, so the actual power gain can't be established.
If I pulled a 180, the motor would look normal, but if i pulled a 150 before, then you could see that it was good for a 30 HP gain. Dynos are too unpredictable for me to waste $100 on a number that means nothing. I'll do it one day at a dyno day event, but I'm in no hurry to throw money away.
Another guy on 8 club with a similar setup is claiming an 80 HP gain, but I'm not sure I trust that number...

We can give it a go if I'm back in town by then. I'm going out to Ohio to visit family and coming back sometime next week. It still needs more tuning, but I think it should be as good or better than stock.
I could go back and pull it again after the tunings done too.

Was there not a noticeable jump in power between stock and bridge? I am assuming you're running a different tune than stock, but with you saying it still needs tuned makes me curious if you just threw a base tune on it and went with it or tuned it at all.

It's tuned enough to run fine in closed loop around 13~14 AFR. Open loop is tuned to hold the factory AFR range. Right now it's all just tuned to be "like" stock. We'll push it further when I have time... busy with job, family, 3 websites, etc.

I understand. Hopefully you can get it tuned relatively soon and get back with us. Like you said, the power numbers don't matter much, but I'd be very interested in knowing the end result anyway.
