View Full Version : 94 MB build.....the time has come

Low compression on both rotors and coolant on the plugs is telling me it's time for a rebuild. My 94 has been good to me the past year and a half but I was always patiently waiting for this time to come. It's a good thing I'm deploying soon so I can start to stock pile shiny new parts!
While the engine is out I'm going to be repainting and cleaning up the engine bay. I've already started to tear stuff down and I'm getting ready to pull the engine this weekend if I can get ahold of an engine hoist sometime this week.
Plans are to either drop it off to have the engine rebuilt before I deploy or while I'm on R&R. All depends on how much free time I can get to myself. I'm undecided at this point on if I want to keep the twins or go single....so I guess that's what I'll be pondering about my entire deployment. :dunno:
I like build theads with pictures so stay tuned for some updates soon!!!

Good luck with your rebuilt and with your deployment. I'm starting to collect parts for my next rebuilt and I have the same dilema, single or BNR's. Have to admit that I'm leaning toward the single side. Looking forward to your finished project.

 @ David.....I figured you or Kevin would show up in here sooner or later. Got the oil cooler off and drained today. Also got the headlights, bumper, support, rad, and a bunch of other things off of the car. It makes me sad to see her like this and I'm also sad that I won't get a chance to drive her before I leave! Oh well, something to look foward to when I get back home! Expect some pictures tomorrow and lots more when the engine comes out this weekend.
@ prrex. If I can find a sweet deal on a good single set up while I'm deployed I'll go single. If not I'll stay with the twins. My main goal right now is to just get the engine pulled and prep for a rebuild in the very near future. I have so little time to get everything I want done before I leave but I know for a fact I NEED to get this engine pulled and start making calls to engine builders :D

Got a lot done today. More stuff out of the engine bay and got just about everything unbolted so I can take out the engine. Last thing I had to do was unbolt the transmission from the PPF and I don't have a long enough extension.....so I'll go pick one up in the morning so the engine will come out tomorrow. Here's where I'm at right now... Crappy iPhone pic....

Not much more to go. After I get the engine out and tore down to short block I'll go ahead and take the rest of the engine bay apart and prep for a new coat of paint.

Well I figured the best way to clean the engine bay and get it painted was to take everything off the front of the car. Besides when I get back and she's running right she's going to get a new coat of paint :D

Got up this morning and got the engine out :D Wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I probably wont be saying that when I go to put in back in though :ack2: Next will be to break the engine down to short block and start cleaning/prepping the engine bay. I'm trying to get as much done before I go on block leave later on this week.....Knowing how my wife is I probably wont get shit done before then or before my deployment!

Looking good, should make it a lot easier to clean the engine bay. Couldn't help but notice the duffle bag, did that dance many of times. The old duffle bag drag, lol.

I haven't forgotten about this thread! Just been busy with stuff you know like being deployed to Afghanistan! I'm a little over halfway through my deployment so it's time to start gathering parts for my build. Should have this beautiful engine in a few weeks courtesy of Crispy over at the 7club.

I'm in the process of getting everything together to upgrade my fuel system to all SS braided and adding a second oil cooler via Howard Coleman's write up. I've got a few other things I want to do like polish some parts and re-wrap my main engine harness but I wont be able to do that until I get back home.
As of right now I'm planning on staying with the twins. I'm thinking about getting in on the BNR stage 3 GB going on over at the 7club. All depends on if I can get my wife to send them out! Also depends if a nice single set up becomes available and just falls in my lap!
I'll keep this thread updated as much as I can!@ I hate when build threads just fall off the face of the earth never to be updated again. As I accumulate more parts and its closer to me coming home expect more updates!

Yeah, Crispy ported it. He uses the pineapple templates.
I'm thinking about having my wife send my harness over here so I can simplify/re-wrap it during my down time...which I have a lot of :hurray: . Anyone have a link to a good place to purchase wire, crimps, hi temp tape, loom, etc? I've got 5 more months and I can easily knock this out while I'm here. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the link. The damn net out here is too slow so I'll have to check it out later.
Got the engine last week from Crispy! Waiting for my wife to send me some pictures. Also received some fuel rail adapters from Garfinkle so I can upgrade my lines to steel braided. Still waiting on my aeromotive fpr though. Should be at the house soon.

It's gonna be like Christmas when you get back. I buy a bunch of stuff during every deployment and I love coming back even more because of it lol.
That engine looks good!

HA! I know! My wife tells me it's her goal to keep me away from my FD for at least the first week I'm back home.....she just doesn't know! She would also rather all those packages coming to my house not be car parts but stuff for her! I'll give her that first week though. She's a trooper and she knows this is my dream car. She tells me all the time she would rather have me back home working on my car then over here in Afghan-a-land or Iraq.
My goal is to have her up and running by the end of the summer. Gives me a little bit of time to play and get her tuned before it starts to get cold this fall. Then I'll finally get to go and drive my FD to DGRR for 2012. Hopefully I don't PCS to somewhere far as hell away so that I miss it then too!!

Luckily I don't have a wife to keep me away from the car LOL. I almost did this past October but she left me while I was deployed this past summer haha. It's tough to not work on the car when you get back, and opening all the packages is too much fun haha.
I was planning on making DGRR this year but I'm not sure how likely that is anymore. Hopefully I'll be able to make it next year though so maybe I'll see you there.
Are you from Durham originally? I was stationed in Fayetteville before here and used to hang out with the rotary group in Raleigh. They're good people.

Yeah, I used to hang out with the Rotary group in Raleigh way back when. I think I remember you coming to some of the meets. That was so long ago. I hear it's not like it used to be.

Really?! I didn't know you hung out there at the same time. Did you have the FD back then? I'm having a hard time remembering cars other than the ones I always saw.
I have no idea what it's like there now, I'm not sure they do much anymore though.

Well I'm back from Afghanistan! I got back about 2 weeks ago and my wife forbid me from touching anything car related for one week! So I've had a week to work on a few things and here's what I've got done so far. I cleaned up most of the parts I want to polish and I started on the UIM. All of these parts were hella dirty.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/oneluvfrmme/3584e452.jpg
The UIM is just 80 grit right now. I still have a few trouble spots I need to get to and I'll start moving up in grits. Here's the LIM all cleaned up and ready to start the 80 grit also.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/oneluvfrmme/e87a1dad.jpg
Also cleaning up and taking apart my TB so I can polish that too. All of the small parts are going to be either a gloss or satin black, I haven't decided yet.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/oneluvfrmme/eab1aff8.jpg
I'm waiting on my order from jegs for all my AN fittings and SB line. All the fittings are going to be black. I bought a set of Garfinkle's AN adapters so I can continue to use the stock rails. I'm going to be running 550/1300. My mom picked up this polished Aeromotive fpr for me for my birthday while I was deployed a few months back.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/oneluvfrmme/335c539d.jpg
I also picked up Garfinkle's coil relocation bracket that I'll install after I redo my engine bay. I'm trying to get all my parts cleaned up/polished/painted before I go on leave so I can get my engine back together so all I have to do when I get back from leave is redo my engine bay and slap my engine back in.
I make it sound all so easy. Still have a lot of stuff to do if I want to get her back up and running by September!

That is so ballin' that your Mom buys you car parts LOL. My Mom just gives me shit for having what she calls "a piece of junk", but she is just giving me a hard time because she knows how much I love the car. Welcome back btw! I'm about to go again in 6 weeks LOL.

Yeah, she's always like what do you want for your b-day and i'll send her a link to what i want and she'll usually get it for me.
Well I'm on leave in NC right now and wont be able to work on much until the 2nd week of Aug. I brought most of my parts to polish with me because I'm going to try and work on them and get them fully polished while I'm at my mothers beach house.... Well thats the plan anyways! Knowing me I'll get all liquored up and be a beach bum for the next 3-4 weeks!
I also got my order from jegs the day before I left for leave. All my black fittings and SB hose are here for my new fuel set up! Can't wait to get back and start building up my block!

I know it's fun working on the car, but for crying out loud man, you just got back from Afghanistan and you're on vacation!!! LOL Funny you brought the parts with you though, that's something I would do too haha. Just don't get liquored up and THEN work on the parts haha.

So.... Little bit of an update. I've got tons of stuff cleaned up/done but I don't have her back together yet. Still waiting on some fittings for my oil cooler and a couple more item to come in.
First up is my new engine coming together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/oneluvfrmme/163d07bf.jpg
Next up I cleaned up my engine harness. Going to start to clean up my emissions harness this week.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/oneluvfrmme/360271fd.jpg
I'm missing a connector on my harness for my oil level sensor. If anyone has a junk harness with one and would like to sell me just the connector let me know.
