I haven't gotten my car back from the body shop yet, but I've been racking my brain while I wait for it.

Right before it went into the shop, I developed a sudden problem. When the car is started cold, it will steam/smoke from the area around the turbo. Quite a substantial amount actually, enough it it pours out from under the hood and even works its way into the cabin via the shifter hole. By the time the car reaches operating temperature, the smoke has dissipated. There hasn't been any fluid/coolant leaking on the ground or into the belly pan.

At first I thought that the gold foil I had put on the underside of my heat shield had started burning, but it was fine. I also eliminated the possibility of an oil leak or such on the manifold wrap. I thought that maybe the coolant feed and return to the CHRA had come loose a little bit, but a cursory check showed they were tight. I didn't have much time before I had to leave the car at the shop, so that is about as far as it went.

Now my question is, have Garrett CHRAs been known to crack? The turbo is a T3 ball-bearing GT3076R.

Obviously I won't have an answer until I get the car back and am able to take a good look at it, but I'm just curious as to whether or not this is something that I should look for?

the bolts holding teh compressor backplate came loose on me once, but that just caused an oil leak, not coolant. are you sure it is coolant?

I'm not 100% sure it is coolant. But it smells like burnt coolant. I had a leaking oil feed fitting last year and it smelled like burning oil.
