View Full Version : Who keyed the BMW M3 at the DGRRX??

I just found out about this...
The only real let down was someone that keyed Mark's beautiful M3 at the lodge. Hopefully it wasnt one of us. Truly a piston head like manuever! I know Phil will not tolerate this type of behavior and would make an example out of this person:nono: !!
I'm going to get to the bottom of this...
If this is an act of one of the rotary guys, I'm going to say that you are NOT invited to any future DGRR events. This kind of act is just child like behavior and is not tolerated by ANY!!!
If anyone knows of who did such act, please PM me. If you could verify and have proof of who did this, I'll reward you by sending $100.
Again, this kind of behavior WILL NOT BE tolerated and we are going to get to the bottom of this!!
This EVENT is not just for rotary guys but all who love and respect rotaries. It doesn't matter if they drove a piston engine to DGRR or Rotary! You need to respect everyone's car and property!
So, if you know of any info leading to this situation, please PM ME!

Wow, why would someone do that??
I better go check the Volvo to make sure it didn't get keyed either. Some douchebags moved it from my cabin to the lodge overnight Saturday, so it could have been a victim as well.
But, it sounds like maybe someone had a grudge. Which M3? The old one or the newer one?

I've emailed the owner of the BMW M3... I'm trying to figure out when and where this happened and if I could get a picture of the damage.
Either case, I'm extremely pissed off that someone would do such a thing!!

We may never get the party at fault to confess to the act, but we have an opportunity to make things right for the BMW owner. If we all throw in $5 each that should be more then enough to fix the damage and show that we are good people here. I've thrown $5 away on crap and it won't hurt us to chip in and help get this situation right.

I've contacted the owner and waiting to hear back about this... if it looks to be that it was done by one of the attendees of DGRRX and we don't have any leads leading to who it was, I'll send in $100 to the M3 owner.
But let me wait and see when and how bad the damage is before we start the collection.... But good to see some of you care about things like this as I dont want this BMW owners to think we are some knuckle heads who acts like a small immature child.

I just stated this on the other forum..
I'll state this now and for next year's event... I will not tolerate such act and if we ever catch whom ever did this this year, I'll go out of my way to do what ever I can to make sure everyone know what kind of person you are and also follow up with legal action. If something like this happens again next year, the event will goto INVITE ONLY!!! This means, you need to know someone in order to attend... as some of you are just too stupid to attend event like this!

I hope the guilty party is caught and ostracized accordingly. As others have stated this sort of shit is immature, and outright unacceptable. My car looks like ass already and if I caught someone digging a key in my paint... there would be blood.

Its things like this that ruin great events does anyone else remember rotorfest in N.J. when the fairgrounds were damaged? it went downhill very quickly and I think its gone now. Phil i think most of us will chip in if needed to correct the problem and I think it will help relations with the other groups who may be around. Thanks for a great event it will be hard to beat next year and congrats on the new baby, where are the pics of the newest rotorhead? no pics or it didn't happen :)

I can help with this as it was my friend's 2006 M3 that was keyed. Mark's M3 was the titanium grey one and is a beautiful car. He inspected it prior to the event and no damage was noted. We noticed the keying on Friday afternoon when leaving the Fontana Dam area for the pic event. The damage is about one foot in length, on the back rear quarter panel. :cuss:
Mark is not in need of money and I have spoken with him about this thread. He's touched and a bit embarrassed with the attention this is getting.
What sucks for me is I convinced Mark to attend DGRRX, telling him how great the rotary community is and then this happens. He's still high on the people he met but for me, this does give us a bit of a black eye.

I bet it wasn't actually a 'key' that did it, but rather a rivet on some jeans, or a wallet chain, something like that.

David,
Im very sorry this happened to your guest. I wished I had known on saturday as I would of definitely made a HUGE deal at the saturday gathering and also at the award ceremony. I think something like this definitely ruins the experience for the guests and also for those who's attending the event.
I know I haven't controlled who comes to the event and such, but if this kind of childish behavior continues on (I've also heard of some rotary guys trying to drift around local roads), I would have to make it invite only and make this event more exclusive vs. open to all... as I can not allow such stupidity to continue on in the future!
If you talk to your guest, there are several of us who's willing to donate to help with fixing his car. Several rotorheads from this forum and 7club has offered to help by donating some money for fixing the damaged area. Again, there are MANY great rotorheads and the select minority who gives bad names to us all.

It sad that people like doing stupid stuff like that ruin things for everyone else.... shouldn't have to be worried about your car getting keyed at an event full of people who all share a love for their cars. It doesn't matter whether the car is a rotary or not its a nice car no matter what. You would think people would respect that, being at a car event. Its just sad. Hope you find out who did it.

The mentioned douche bags for the Volvo would be me. It was nothing more than a harmless prank played out by me as payback for being the canvass for a pair of individuals with a Sharpie in hand to thoroughly decorate from head to toe. Childish I do admit but no harm was done. DJ wasn't alone in this. My5aBaby also received payback. Again, no harm done.
Oh yeah, it should also be noted that recipients and I stayed in the same cabin so it's not assumed that I broke into anyone's cabin!

I don't know if it is coincidence, or if the Volvo was a victim as well.

WTF...
For an event that's gaining a lot of steam and is potentially getting picked up by Mazda USA, someone REALLY wants it to die in terms of a public event...
I'm sure Mazda would love to sponsor an event where it's patrons were destroying property...

Playing a harmless prank on close friend vs. what it appears to be hatred towards non-rotary vehicle is unacceptable at DGRR.
DJ, can you post picture(s) of your scratch? I'm also wondering if its possibly the cause of a tree branch or some random things on the road that might of cause this issue.
Either case, if its in fact cause by some idiot deliberately keying piston engined cars, I'm going to give one more year and if we have another round of this kind of BS, I'm going to make this event INVITE ONLY and with very selective criteria (age, how long you've owned your car, etc). I rather have less people whom are more serious about the event than try to have as many people as possible. I'm sure some of you also agree with this as I'm sure you yourself don't want to watch over your shoulder all the time by bringing your daily because your car isn't ready. I'm also going to check my TL to see if I've got some sort of damage from all this.

Hi everyone,
I am the M3 guy. Philip emailed me about this, and I want to thank him and you all so much for all your thoughts. My friend David (War Eagle on the forum) who invited me to come to DGRRX this year called me last night to tell me that folks are really upset about this, wanting to raise money, etc. I really appreciate that, and I am touched that everyone would be so protective, especially to an interloper with a piston engine. :-)
I just tried to take a picture of the damage, but the sun is bright right now and I can't really get a good pic or see what I'm doing with my iPhone camera. The mark is about a foot long, over the rear passenger side quarter panel. BTW - I saw a question on the forum as to which M3 it was - my car is a silver/gray '06 M3.
I am extremely grateful for everyone's thoughts and concern to make things right. I do not want any reimbursement to fix this, and I am a bit embarrassed about all the attention. I do agree that this is something to address, not for this specific incident, but for the overall sense of respect for attendees, guests, and anyone else we come in contact with in future events. Having said that, after reading Philip's email and what's been posted here I feel very good about how members represent the club and events, both now and in the future.
BTW - I really enjoyed my first time visit to DGRRX! Everyone was great...I loved the location...the events...running the Dragon's Tail...Fontana Dam. I was a little intimidated by all the knowledge and skill everyone has about cars, engines and performance driving. I'm not really much of a car guy...I just like to drive fast, and am not really concerned how that happens under the hood. That's probably why the M3 is a good choice for me - I get to be sporty at times, yet it's hard for an idiot like me to break it, and with the optional seat warmer and 'cruise' settings it is acceptable to my wife. :-) Anyway, I really had a good time at DGRRX, and hope to come back for future events.
Thank you!
Um...let's see...Rotaries rule, Pistons drool! How's that? :-)

So we're cleaning up on Sunday and I see some spark plugs by the garage. I grab them and think to myself "these must be from DJs blown engine he brought for Landers" so I threw them away. About 10 minutes later Zach asks me if I put my spark plugs back in... Thankfully they were still on top in the trash can.

Mark,
as an representative of DGRR and the rotary community, i apologize if this incident was caused by one of the rotorhead. I am extremely upset with this situation and I will emphasize heavily for next year's DGRR. Such act should of never happened by any, but especially us rotorheads. As I stated in previous posts, if something like this happens again next year, I will go INVITE ONLY and will be very selective of who comes to this event. I really don't care about the numbers but quality of the event. If restricting who comes will make this event go much smoother, friendlier, and more mature crowd, I rather have 200 vs. 400 to get this event more exclusive and more professional.

To the owner of the BMW, I am embarassed that such a thing would happen at an event like this. Just goes to show that there are morons in even the best gatherings. Phil and the volunteers bust their butts to put this event on, and they deserve better than this for their reward.

It's a sad day indeed that some prick thinks it's cool to key someone's car, especially at a gathering of people who put all their heart into building their cars. Piston or Rotary, we all share the same passion. Just a theory, but given the MO, it's probably some jackass in an eclipse or altezza with a god complex. Most eclipse/altezza owners around here are pricks.
I didn't get to make it this year, nor did my fellow rotary buddies here, but I'm definitely for hunting down the asshat that did this. When a UPS truck hit my FC last year, UPS denied anything about it and insurance denied the claim of course. Ended up having to hammer it out and repaint it with stuff from dollar general with some help from my fellow rotorhead across town. Still pisses me off to this day how cowardly some people are.
Major props to the community stepping up to make the M3 owner feel whole again. If something like that happened to my car, the amount of community support would definitely make me feel better about coming back.

Nah, I think he's just a little confused and lost in the internet.
To stay on track though, I've often felt a little embarrased being associated with certain FC owners. However, @ DGRR it's a completely different crowd, or at least it is for the most part.
