I know its a crappy pic. Its the pic i got from a guy whos selling me the motor. He said its a 13b from a cosmo. Im pretty sure its not an RE. Im thinking its an old school cosmo 13b. What im not sure of, is if the housings have the grooves in them or not. The only reason i would buy the motor, would be for the housings if they have the grooves in them (like gslse).
any help here?

the older style oil pressure sensor and oil filter pedestal along with the iron water pump housing definitely implies older 13B, something pre-rx7

What are the letters on the back of the intermediate plate just under the oil filler tube?

Coolant seal grooves, and yes. Now all you need to do is determine how worn they are. Also maybe get a set of 20mm freeze plugs for the coolant ports because GSL-SE housings were undrilled, so you'll need to block these in the old housings to be compatible with your newer manifold and gasket. Also get a set of o-rings to be sure you won't get any leaks if the freeze plugs aren't sealed perfectly.

hope you get it cheap the oxidation on the exterior of the aluminium pieces means she was stored in a wet or humid place and the insides of the housings are probably rotted
It does appear to be from a 76-8 cosmo but it could also be out of an Rx4 same basic motor. and it could be a j-spec motor but again they are the same basic motor and before you go chiming in jeff I do have 2 j-spec 13b 4 ports vintage 79-82

Dave, I bet your J-spec engines have NO intermediate plates and the end plates are nitrided with a thick rib at the rear upper dowel pin, and lack an oil pressure sender hole. 18 tension bolts, right? Or maybe you have a couple of late model(?) really nice R5 13Bs that have tall ported intermediate plates, nitrided, high volume oil pump (17.5mm) and also lack an oil pressure sender hole. These have a thinner curved rib at the dowel pin, short oil filter pedestal and 17 tension bolts.
The first rotary I ever rebuilt was one of these late model R5 13Bs with the curved rib. I have a soft spot for these. I need a heart shaped smilie.
Looks like that engine above was pressure washed, then allowed to sit. That's always bad news because water always finds a way in. Notice there isn't any oil grime collected in the usual places? And the paint appears to have been blasted off. Yeah, it's been pressure washed. Good luck with that engine sen2. Does it still turn freely?
