Wow, is that car running on the stock ECU? The fuel there must be very high octane if it did not blow up yet.
Pettersen
03-29-2010, 09:32 AM
runs on 91octane.
Also it has 720cc secondarys.
I don't see why it would blow up with the stock ecu just because of porting and a bigger turbo when i'm only running 7psi.

Something about the extra amount of flow compared to the stock turbo at the same pressure level, causing it to go a bit lean. Do you have a Wide Band oxygen sensor to monitor the AFR ratios? I'm curious about how the afr's look under load.
Really, I'm just amazed to see this setup work, didn't know it was possible to run a different turbo w/o a standalone.

I'm going to buy a 11" Focal 27v2 at some point(wich will be mounted with the magnet in to the box), but for now i made a spacerplate and mounted a old 12" sub i had layin around.

The last shots look familiar, the interior is a pain on the FC, but it has to be fixed sometime...
I see you used the opportunity to run power to your subs - good idea, do it right and it probably won't short out and leave you stranded.
Looks good so far.
By the way Max777, the engine is typically the driving factor in air flow rate at a given boost level. With the intake air pressure (boost) kept constant, I can only think of two methods that the air flow rate through the engine could increase by merely changing the turbo:
Method 1: More dense air (cooler charge) due to a more efficient compressor. This actually helps the engine keep from detonating.
Method 2: Lower exhaust backpressure due to a more efficient turbine - decreases the exhaust reversion which lowers the intake air temperature... once again decreasing the tendency to detonate.
The project looks good!

Found some more rust, and the worst i've seen on the car so far. Still it's not to bad for a car from 86 :)
And on the bright side, i should become fairly good at welding once i'm done with the rust repair.

No, the underbody was done by the last owner, and from what i can tell the only place there is rust under the car is on the rear tow hook :D
I tried the mig today, probably going to take a little while before i'm good enough to weld anything on the car tho.

Also took of the entire exhaust to get rid of all leaks, and to get rid of the tension in the downpipe.

Made a buttplug for the exhaust, it's only a temporary solution until i can either modify or make a new exhaust.
But the sound is much lower, so it's livable inside the car now, + it's easy to remove for trackdays and general spirited driving :D

Well i was in a garage with a garage pit, and i had help. But no it wasn't to difficult, just as long as you support the engine properly so it doesn't move when you take off the engine mount. The first time i had a jack underneath but the engine still shifted enough to make it a pita to get the engine mount back on, and with the engine further down the studs where almost impossible to get in some places, so i used some 2"4" and supported the engine from the top and it didn't move at all.
You can use an allen key on most of the studs, but on the front row i used two nuts thightened agains each other, and a little ratchet with and extender and a angle thingy(picture i don't know what it's called in english), it's a bit fiddly but it's doable.
Also a warning, it's probably not possible to get the oil pan on without scratching agaisnt the studs, so i had the sealent on the block, not the pan.

Got my ebay intercooler piping kit today, quality seems to be ok, only thing that i can complain about is that the paintjob isn't the best i've ever seen, a bit of dust and scratches in the paint, but that can always be fixed later on, will probably scratch the paint more when i'm installing it anyway.

One week until trackweekend, and it turns out i have a oil leak, last time i changed the oil pan it didn't make a seal+ it looks like i have some other small leaks or sweatting that i need to tend to. I decided i need to take the engine out in order to get the leaks fixed properly, it's just to much oil slowly running down to the gasket surface, and im guessing that's the reason it leaks now.

So i went to the track this weekend, went with a small oil leak, came home with a big oil leak and a blown turbo, only got about an hour or so out on the track, but all in all a good weekend, the three hour drive home with a blown turbo was a bit nerve wrecking tho.
Pictures will follow when i get them.
So i need a new turbo, i plan to run 0.5bar until i brake the NA transmission and then turn up to 1 bar when i change in the T2 trans i have in my basement. I need something that delivers boost earlier than 5000rpm, the xspower turbo the last owner put on the car didn't deliver 0.5 before that.
My car is streetported, external wastegate and has a T4 flange, any suggestions to wich turbo i should go with?

Bought some stuff :D, Rtek 2.1 and everything needed is on it's way, best i could afford right now.
Also i'm going to buy a used Garrett T66 AR.96 journal bearing and not watercooled, still it should perform better than the XSpower T70 AR1.05

Build plans for the T2 block:
S5 NA rotors.
lightweight flywheel and counterweight.
Semi PP S5 NA housings.
T2 streetported irons.
Custom sequensal ITB setup.
++ machining and high rpm modifications
I think i have decided on buying a Haltech sport 1000 to run it, since it seems like it's worth the extra money over the Sprint RE...
9.7 rotors are on their way.
Semi PP housing are ordered.
This engine probably will probably take a long time to finish building, so i plan on buying the ecu as soon as i can afford, so i can start learning how to use it on my stock S4NA engine

Cool, the fighter plane motif. Now you just have to mount .50s under the pop-ups and people cutting you off will no longer be a problem. I like the speaker surround, very clean, it looks factory.

Came in a bit to fast thru a chicane and lost control, vent sideways out of the track and turned the car on it's side, this was early on friday. Fixed what needed fixing and made a lexan window, so i drove the rest of friday, saturday and sunday, the damage is only cosmetic and the car is still going strong, just need some major bodywork...

Anyway, irons have arrived so i just need to try to port the junk irons and then i should be able to do a good job with the "new" irons :)

Soo, my plans have changed. Or rather im going back to school after the summer and see if i can't manage to become an engineer. So i need to thigten up the budget. Wich means i will be going with T2 rotors (means i don't have to buy a flywheel and rear counterweight) and i bought a PFC with datalogit from a friend (got it cheap since i have helped him working on his car).
So to sum up the new plans for the engine:
Apexi pfc
S4T2 rotors
Stock flywheel
semi pp and mild streetport.
Modified T2 lim
FD UIM and TB with adapterplate to fit the t2 lim (i have checked with an old gasket and it doesn't seem like a very big project)
Rotaryworks 2*2,25" header
Custom 2,5" exhaust
The only things i need to buy are the banzai adapterkit for the PFC and parts to build the new exhaust, so should be doable to get this done before school starts.
Now i just need to finish my coffee, and go in the garage and try to port my junk irons and then start on the irons i'm actually going to use when i feel i'm ready.

So plans have changed, got some advice from some forum members wich turned me away from sequential throttle control, atleast at this stage.
Going to modify the T2 LIM(since it means i can use the stock fuel system, and i can't realy afford to fit that into my budget at the moment), and make a new UIM.
The modifications i plan to do on the T2 LIM for it to suit my build:
Fit a runner from pp's to the primary runner, and port up the primary runners from where the pp runner is connected up to the flange.
Here is a sketch of how i plan on building the UIM(can't figure out how to make bent piping in sketchup without using a lot of time, so the lines from the flange to the tb's are supposed to be 42mm ID pipe.)
http://i1073.photobucket.com/albums/w394/ESRotary/SP/Intake/v1.jpg
I have all the parts i need, so i will start on the UIM today.

42mm x 4 flowing full time is a lot of pipe to fill.
You're going to lose a lot of low end power because the pipes are that big.

Took a pressure test of the coolant system, and turned out there was a leak, the front iron must have had a weakness in the coolant seal groove, cause it had broken loose while assembling the engine, very glad i found that now and not with the engine running.
So new Front iron on the way from UK.
While i wait i have taken care of some other small stuff.
Pfc is installed and the stock fc engine idles and drives ok with the base map, decided to test it on a engine and sensors i know work, so i can be shure that any problems with the semi pp engine, won't be related to the PFC hardware.
Built new exhaust from the header and back, used 2,25" SS pipe and v-bands, so it will be easy to take it down and modify later if nececary.
Have removed the old speaker shelf since i wasn't realy happy with how it looked, installed a new sub, should take about 10min to change out the sub for the rear tower strut.

So got the new iron, ported it and assembled the engine with the semi pp housing, and the coolant system did not hold pressure. So i dissassembled it and found out that both the semi pp housings had leaks thru the filler used around the p ports, so i will nee to repair those before they can be used.
I decided to use the old T2 housings and just get the engine buildt and in the car, and then i can add the Semi pp housings on the next rebuild instead.
Assembled the engine with the stock housings and the cooling system not held pressure.
Shortblock nearly done:

Some stuff has happened since i last posted.
Car is now matte black, engine is in with T2 turbo intake (itb setup did not have enough clearence to the exhaust, so it's on hold for now). Also converted it from 4 -> 5 bolt.
I have gotten myself a daily driver, so the FC will not be on the road and will only be used for one or two track weekends each year for the next three years since i have just started on a bachelor degree in engineering.
Got plates back on the car, atleast for a couple of months, feels great driving it around again :D
Ran a little rich, around 10 AFR. I have adjustet it a little and it now runs around 12 AFR at idle, and runs good enough now for me to get it to a friend with a dyno, so i can get it properly tuned and see what kind of power i will have to play with :)

Are those the 42's you were talking about?
They sound really nice!
Aside from the really low RPM stumble on the last vid, the throttle response is damn crisp!
Motorcycle TB's?
I assume you're going to eventually go turbo with this set-up?

Yup, just took forever to get it done, and the intake design changed many times...
They are 4*42mm tb's from a Gsxr 1000.
I have changed injectors so the map is no where near where it needs to be, could not even get it to rev above 3500-4k because it drowned. Will fix it this summer, and get it on the dyno. Realy looking forward to hearing how it sounds under load at high rpm.
I'm currently finishing up my second year of my three year mechanical engineering degree, so turbo will have to wait untill i start getting some paychecks.
Planning on fabricating a plenum next, so i might just have to make shure it will be strong enough to handle boost in the future. Only issue would be to fit the turbo, the runners on the itb manifold only have a 30 degree rise, so the turbo manifold would need to extend almost to the radiator.

Before i mounted the itb setup, i modified the exhaust somewhat, to get it to not make my ears bleed.
Improved the Y on the headers, wich was a heavy, ugly pos hack job, welded with the worst mag welder ever created, and replaced it with just a vband, also made and fitted a vband and compensator to a new muffler. I don't have pictures of the rear muffler, but it is a RB turbo muffler i got from a friend, and it is way better than anything i ever had before.

Got the stock camber link, Toe rods, front swaybar link and rear sway bar link into the computer, considering making my own adjustable ones since it seems like it would be a fairly easy project, and much cheaper (and more fun) than buying the ones available.
I should be able to make all of the rod's for less than the cost of toe rods.

Toe link drawn up like all the other aftermarket ones i have seen. But it seems the stock rod is designed to avoid to much of an angle on the balljoints, and this design on the adjustable ones seems kind of lazy and worse than the stock setup.
So i think i want to make my design look more like the stock one than the aftermarket ones...
