I am very curious about this....
Why do people sell used renesis engines (condition essentially unknown to the buyer) for $1500 and up?
I can purchase one at the local dealership as a crate reman for right under $2000.
So, what gives?

I think the used engine is a complete longblock with all the expensive manis, expensive OMPs, WP, TPS, injectors etc etc etc. The crate from the dealership is just the keg correct? If you're doing an engine swap it makes alot more sense to get the used and take a chance becuase all the other parts will cost more than $1500.

I guess. But I have seen short blocks for $1500.
A Mazda Reman with warranty for under 2k is awesome.

That is retail, he said it could be cheaper.
Even $2100 is a good deal.

Check out www.mazmart.com for renesis rebuilt by Rick Engman. I know a while back he had them for like $2K. If you contact them, ask for Paul. Strange, I cannot find the MazMart vendor here. Where did they go?

Mazda remans have poor rebuild quality, we are rebuilding a couple right now . They didn't even last 40k...

Can you tell what parts were replaced, and what was not? what was the failure mode if you don't mind? water jacket? i've seen one rx-8 that lost compression, but i was never told why, the guy was to busy trying to sell it to me.

The two I have seen lost compression from too much side seal clearance and worn out apex seals. Rotor housings and bearings were shot too. Sideseal clearance was in the .024"+ range. It appears to be they replace just soft and hard seals...

I got my short block for $1000 Shipped. I'd much rater go that route and have it rebuilt by someone fairly reputable than to risk anything with a factory Mazda reman. As mentioned, their clearances / tolerances are pretty sloppy. Hand cut side seals FTW.

the mazda reman comes with the water pump flywheel and oil pan.
when i was looking at doing an Rx8 swap (vs the PP) in 2006 i priced out all the intakes and fuel real stuff, its like $5k!
